Chapter 119: Spring Letter in the Snow
Lu Wensheng saw a carriage parked on the side of the road from a distance.
A blue-gray carriage with two horses pulling side by side looked familiar, like the one that Nian Xi had been riding in at the gate of Panlou a few days ago.
He told the driver to slow down.
Then, I met a pair of clear and watery almond eyes.
In just a moment of passing by, he saw the girl with a jade hairpin in her cloud-like hair, a delicate forehead and beautiful eyebrows, and she was extremely beautiful. Against the backdrop of the snow, she was another kind of beauty in the world.
The carriage stopped.
Lu Wensheng ordered his followers to invite Miss Wen to sit in his carriage.
As expected, I was rejected.
So he got out of the car himself, walked to her car, and spoke through the car window with gentle eyes and a clear, mellow voice:
"Where is Miss Wen going?"
Nian Xi was somewhat surprised by Lu Wensheng's kindness. His servant had come to invite her just now, and she had clearly refused. She didn't expect him to come in person.
"The Duke of Fuguo."
The snowflakes were very large, and he did not hold an umbrella, so his long black hair was soon covered with white frost.
"The driver is on the way and will take me home soon. Thank you for your kindness."
"It's snowing heavily," Lu Wensheng said in a gentle voice, as if he knew Nianxi's concern, and added slowly, "You can take my carriage back home first. I have nothing urgent to do, so you can wait."
He was so handsome and cheerful. In the bright and beautiful spring day, he was waiting quietly outside the car under the falling snow, wearing a brown fur coat, as if the worldly affairs had nothing to do with him.
Nian Xi looked at him and nodded gently, "Thank you, Duke Fuguo. Thank you for your help."
He showed his full sincerity and opened his oil-paper umbrella to shield her from the flying snowflakes.
Nian Xi walked side by side with him and realized that he was very tall, with a straight and well-proportioned body. In order to take into account her height, the handle of the umbrella was completely tilted towards her. In the short distance from her carriage to his, his black cloak was already covered with snow foam.
As for her, the north wind only blew a few snow grains onto her body.
Nian Xi couldn't bear to see him waiting there, so she took his carriage back home first.
Although this was his good intention.
So he turned around and asked, "Where is the Duke of Fuguo going?"
Lu Wensheng stood in front of the car, gentle and calm. When he heard the words, a smile appeared on his face. He told the direction.
The weather was bad, the snow was falling heavier, there were fewer people on the streets, and it was freezing cold.
Nian Xi said softly, "You and I are going in the same direction. It doesn't make sense to ask you to wait outside in this weather. Thank you for giving me a ride."
Nian Xi is not a hypocritical person. She has lived for nearly thirty years and has long been able to calmly respond to other people's kindness, and will not be afraid to act out of embarrassment.
Lu Wensheng hummed slightly, paused for a moment and then said, "Then I'm sorry to trouble Miss Wen."
It is rare for a nobleman of such high status to express his opinion in this way, not to mention that they are just riding in the same car, so how could he feel wronged?
Perhaps it was because of Lu Huai that he was extra sensitive around young women, but Nian Xi knew she had a clear conscience and didn't feel wronged.
Then he bowed slightly and said, "Thank you, Duke."
The carriage of the Duke of Fuguo's Mansion is much more spacious and luxurious.
The heater in the car was burning very brightly, and soon Nianxi's whole body was warmed up.
Lu Wensheng was a very quiet person. He knew when to act and when to retreat, and he knew when to stop. Apart from telling the driver to go to Yiqiao Street, he never spoke to Nianxi again.
For two people who are not familiar with each other, silence is sometimes the best.
Nian Xi glanced at him secretly.
Lu Wensheng was reading a book with his eyelashes lowered, sitting across the desk from her, with a relaxed and focused expression.
To kill time, Nianxi looked at the inlaid gold Boshan stoves on the table. The upper part of the stove and the stove cover were cast with overlapping mountains, dotted with hunters and wild animals, and the inlaid gold patterns were colorful and very beautiful.
There was clear smoke rising from the top of the stove, the smoke was as light and thin as a string, with a subtle cool smell and a lingering fragrance, like plum blossoms blooming in the snow, bringing out the warm woody aroma.
Let people feel the hidden warmth.
Just now, I was walking side by side with him, and from the sleeves of his cloak, I could smell the faint fragrance of spring in the snow.
Perhaps she was looking too intently; even Lu Wensheng noticed it. He looked up from the book and saw the girl's bright black almond-shaped eyes, with a bit of naivety and charm. In the carriage, she was like a pure white magnolia.
I couldn't help but ask, "Do you like this fragrance?"
He suddenly spoke, breaking the silence in the carriage, but startled Nian Xi who was staring at the Boshan stove.
"I'm sorry." Lu Wensheng said quickly and gently.
Nian Xi didn't look up, but pointed at the green smoke on the top of the Boshan stove. She waited until the smoke became straight again, as if it was going straight up to the sky, and then she spoke:
"Look—"
Lu Wensheng didn't know what important discovery she had made, so he followed her gaze and looked carefully for a while. As she finished speaking, the smoke trails dispersed and turned into a hazy mass. She then raised her head and said with a smile:
"I don't understand fragrance, I just think this stove looks good."
Lu Wensheng finally understood why Xiaoqi liked her.
Looks gentle, but actually still very mischievous.
She had clearly been blaming herself for the words that dispersed the green smoke, but she was being mysterious and made him stare at her in confusion for a long while.
But at the same time it is a very novel experience.
Most of the time, women are always reserved in front of him, deliberately creating a beautiful appearance.
This certainly doesn't mean that he is very good, which is why he attracted the attention of these women, but it is enough to illustrate Miss Wen's calmness and ease.
It's not an easy thing for someone of her age.
He was ten years older than her, and except for the initial embarrassment when she thanked him, he received equal feedback from her the rest of the time.
Not because of status, age or even gender.
Not arrogant, not fawning, and not trying to please others.
It was just a little joke, but it made Lu Wensheng feel relaxed, and his mood improved along with the smile.
"If you like this Boshan stove, I will give it to you."
Nian Xi smiled and shook her head, "If that were the case, wouldn't everyone be looking forward to riding on the Duke of Fu's carriage and getting a treasure?"
She said it jokingly, but her rejection was obvious.
Lu Wensheng never liked to force others, so he ignored it.
He lowered his eyes to read again, and she continued to stare at the smoke on the stove to pass the time. Neither of them spoke anymore, but there was no more awkwardness as at the beginning, and both of them felt more relaxed.
The carriage stopped at the gate of Wen Mansion.
After getting off the car, Nian Xi bowed to Lu Wen Shengfu and thanked him for giving her a ride.
He did not get out of the car again, but kept watching her enter the house. Until the door closed, the red figure turned around and waved to him again.
The wind and snow softened his features.
After Nian Xi left, Lu Wensheng's carriage remained stationary for a long time until his servant came to ask, then he nodded and the carriage drove away.
Lu Wensheng couldn't read the book any more, and instead stared at the inlaid gold Boshan stove on the table, just like Nianxi had just done.
The smoke was curling up, and he looked at it for a long time.
