Chapter 116 The Emperor Regrets It
Just as Miss Wu said, the emperor still had some affection for this concubine he had favored for many years.
When Consort Wu saw the Emperor arrive, she immediately dismissed the palace maids, and slowly walked up to him in a peach-colored gauze dress, revealing a charming expression. She said softly, "Your Majesty, it has been quite some time since you last visited me."
Seeing her haggard face, the Emperor felt pity and said, "Haven't I been thinking that you're still not well?"
Consort Wu lowered her head shyly as she listened, and helped the Emperor to sit on the edge of the bed.
The emperor sat down on the bed and faintly smelled a delicate fragrance.
He sniffed it gently, "What is this? It smells so good."
Consort Wu glanced at the incense in the incense burner and slowly smiled, "Your Majesty, this is new incense that I bought."
The Emperor sniffed again, "This fragrance smells wonderful. Put some in my room next time."
"Yes, Your Majesty," Consort Wu said slowly with a smile, her eyes full of joy, thinking that the incense must have worked.
She slowly sat down next to the emperor, preparing to loosen his belt.
Just then, the Emperor suddenly removed her hand, saying, "Your body is not fully recovered yet. I have only come to see you today and will not be staying overnight."
Consort Wu was stunned, then smiled and said, "Your Majesty, it's alright, I'm almost fully recovered."
Wisps of white smoke drifted slowly past the emperor.
As the emperor smelled the fragrance, his mind was filled with images of his deceased empress.
The past events flashed before his eyes, causing a slight ache in his heart.
Seeing that he didn't move, Consort Wu took it upon herself to untie his belt.
The Emperor felt the restless hand, stood up abruptly, and shoved Consort Wu away.
"Zhou'er! Zhou'er!"
He stood before Consort Wu, calling out the Empress's name as if he had lost his soul.
Consort Wu was stunned. "Your Majesty, what's wrong?"
The Emperor looked around and exclaimed, "Where is my Zhou'er? Do you know where my Zhou'er is?!"
Upon hearing the Empress's name, Consort Wu trembled with rage. "Your Majesty, have you forgotten? The Empress is dead. That vicious woman died on the way after you exiled her!"
A loud cracking sound.
The Emperor raised his hand and slapped Consort Wu hard across the face. "Who gave you the right to talk about her like that?!"
Consort Wu covered her swollen face, stunned and rooted to the spot, tears streaming down her face like pearls.
"Your Majesty, what's wrong with you? You were the one who banished her to the Cold Palace, you were the one who drove her out of the palace, and you were the one who killed her entire maternal family!"
The Emperor was stunned by her words. In that instant, he seemed to regain his senses, his eyes reddening. "Wrong, everything is wrong. Zhou'er and I grew up together. We would never even step on an ant. How could she possibly harm anyone? I must have made a mistake!"
After saying that, he looked at Consort Wu again, "Was it you?!"
Consort Wu immediately knelt down and said, "Your Majesty, I really did not harm the Empress. There were witnesses and evidence at the time, and Your Majesty saw it all."
The Emperor waved his sleeve and said, "No, there must be a mistake."
After he finished speaking, he turned to leave.
Consort Wu grabbed his robe and said, "Your Majesty, the Empress is dead. Have you forgotten about her?"
The emperor forcefully pulled his robe back and ran towards the palace where the empress had lived.
Consort Wu chased after her, but was stopped by a group of eunuchs.
She watched the emperor's hurried departure and collapsed to the ground in anger.
What fragrance can make a man change his mind? Yes, he did change his mind, but it's with another woman!
When Consort Wu returned to the palace, she threw away the entire box of incense.
After leaving Consort Wu's palace, the Emperor arrived at the palace where the Empress had once lived. Standing in the empty courtyard, he thought of the loving times they had shared, and tears streamed down his face.
"Zhou'er, it was my fault. I shouldn't have listened to their slander and ruined your entire Lu family! I caused you and Ruiyuan to be reduced to ashes!"
After saying that, he slowly walked inside and knelt down directly beside the bed where the Empress had once slept.
Then, the entire courtyard was filled with his remorseful cries.
The old eunuch standing nearby couldn't bear to watch any longer and walked up to the emperor, whispering, "Your Majesty, the dead cannot be brought back to life. Please take good care of yourself!"
