Chapter 13 Going to Buy Rice
"Is there any hope?" Aunt Zhou asked in surprise.
Du Wanchun nodded and said, "Yes, these seedlings and vegetables are just sick. With some medicine, they should get better."
There are specific methods to cultivating crops and vegetables; it's not as simple as just planting them and being done with it. Just like people, seedlings and vegetables can get sick if not properly cared for.
When Du Wanchun was still a bit slow-witted, she often followed her mother to the vegetable garden to ponder these things, so she learned a little bit about them.
Aunt Zhou and Zhou Zhao had read about these things in books before, so they probably understood after hearing Du Wanchun say this.
“Okay, I still have some copper coins on me. I’ll go to the county to buy some medicine, and also some rice and seeds.” Aunt Zhou nodded in agreement, full of energy.
The family returned home and told Zhou Ruiyuan and Zhou Feng what had happened.
Zhou Ruiyuan and Zhou Feng, on the other hand, were much more composed. Upon hearing that the land was coming back, they immediately dug out all the remaining seeds from their home.
Aunt Zhou took stock and realized she didn't need to buy anything.
Du Wanchun squatted down, picked up a handful of seeds, looked at them, and said with a smile, "Mother, why don't you skip the county today and plant these now?"
Aunt Zhou stood up and said with a smile, "Of course I'll go. Even if I don't buy seeds, I'll still buy rice and medicine."
After she finished speaking, she turned around, went into the house, took out some copper coins, put them in her pocket, and said, "Wanchun, you stay at home, Zhao'er and I will go."
Du Wanchun nodded and said with a smile, "Mother, be careful on the road."
Aunt Zhou was in high spirits when she heard about the happy event. She said with a bright smile, "Our Changliu Village is close to Cheng'an County. It's less than half an hour's walk there. You and Ruiyuan wait at home. Zhao'er and I will be back soon."
"I understand, Mother." Du Wanchun got up and went to Zhou Da Niang's side, then saw her and Zhou Zhao out the door together.
Not long after they left, it was almost noon, and every household was preparing to cook lunch.
Du Wanchun went to the kitchen and found that the rice in the jar was almost gone. Looking into the pot, she found a few pieces of cooked cornbread.
She quickly reached out and touched it; it was still warm.
It seems that Aunt Zhou made this this morning.
She took out the cornbread and put it aside, then found the sweet potatoes left in the house, peeled them, cut them into chunks, and threw them into the pot to cook along with the last of the rice.
She crouched down, looked at the fire inside, and picked up a dry twig to put it in.
However, just as she reached out her hand, she found that the branch in her hand had been grabbed.
Those were hands as white as jade.
Du Wanchun looked up following the direction of the hands and saw Zhou Ruiyuan.
Without saying a word, he snatched the dry branch from his hand, broke it in two, bent down, and threw it into the fire.
Then, with practiced ease, he picked up two larger pieces of wood and pushed them inwards.
With a large piece of wood in the stove, the fire was stable, and the sweet potato porridge in the pot began to steam.
Du Wanchun quickly picked up a large spoon and stirred it in the pot. A large cloud of white smoke rose up, and soon the porridge began to bubble.
The two didn't say a word the whole time, but they cooperated very well.
Du Wanchun was surprised that he could not move his legs, but he was so skilled at doing farm work. Zhou Ruiyuan felt sorry for her, a young girl, and saw how smoothly she moved around in the kitchen. He must have done a lot of farm work before.
After the porridge was cooked, Du Wanchun quickly ladled out a bowl and smiled at Zhou Ruiyuan, saying, "Husband, leave this to me. You can go out and wait."
Zhou Ruiyuan glanced at her hand holding the bowl, then pushed his chair and turned to leave.
Du Wanchun then ladled out several more bowls and carried them to the front room.
She had just put the porridge on the table when she saw Zhou Ruiyuan come out of his room, holding a small sachet in his hand.
The box is made of sandalwood and is very exquisite.
Du Wanchun spotted it immediately, paused for a moment, and then quickly smiled and said, "Husband, come and have some porridge."
After she finished speaking, she turned around and prepared to bring out another bowl from the kitchen.
Zhou Ruiyuan went straight to her side and quickly took her hand, saying, "Wait a minute."
