Chapter 16 Preparing to Sell Radishes
Aunt Zhou smiled from ear to ear, "Isn't it delicious? They were all dug up from our land. When we bought that land, it was all rocks. I never expected that radishes would grow here now."
Du Wanchun looked surprised, then smiled and said, "That's wonderful."
"Yes, we can make radish soup for lunch today." Aunt Zhou poured all the radishes out of the basket and put them on the ground. After looking at them for a while, she said, "But we can't finish all these radishes."
Du Wanchun squatted down, picked up a radish and weighed it in her hand. Suddenly, she had an idea and said, "Mother, why don't we take these radishes to the county and sell them?"
"Selling radishes?" Aunt Zhou asked, somewhat surprised.
Du Wanchun revealed her sweet dimples and nodded: "That's right, it's selling radishes."
Aunt Zhou looked puzzled and said, "People actually buy these radishes? I see that every household in the village grows them."
Du Wanchun stood up and said slowly, "Mother, everyone in this village grows radishes, but the officials and nobles in the county don't. They usually have people buy vegetables from nearby villages. Why don't we just find a family to sell to?"
"Who will you sell it to?" Aunt Zhou asked hurriedly. She had only been in Changliu Village with her child for a few years, and she didn't know many people, let alone people from the county or even people from the village.
Du Wanchun suddenly thought of someone: Aunt He, the kitchen helper in Li County's house.
Aunt He and her mother used to be from the same village and grew up together. They had a pretty good relationship. Later, she married the guard of Magistrate Li's family and worked as a maid in the kitchen. Gradually, they had less and less contact.
However, when her mother was still alive, Aunt He often helped buy a lot of grain and vegetables for their family.
She had seen it many times when she accompanied her mother to deliver vegetables.
“Mother, I know the cook at Magistrate Li’s house. Why don’t I take him to the county tomorrow to see if we can sell them?” Du Wanchun said with a smile.
Aunt Zhou thought for a moment, "Okay, but I have to go with you."
Zhou Zhao stepped forward and said, "Mother, you're still busy sewing clothes for your sister-in-law, why don't I go with her?"
After hearing this, Aunt Zhou glanced at the remaining cloth on the table and looked somewhat troubled.
“My third brother is busy looking after our family’s land, so I’d better go alone.” Du Wanchun was afraid that Aunt Zhou would be unwilling, so she quickly added, “Mother, don’t worry, I’ve been to the county before, I’ll be fine on my own.”
We're about to get our land back, but with no one watching over it, the Chen family next door will probably try to take it back.
As Aunt Zhou looked at the cloth, her brows furrowed slowly. She was worried about Du Wanchun going out alone, but she also didn't want her to have no clothes to wear when she returned to her parents' home the day after tomorrow. She really didn't know what to do.
At this moment, Zhou Ruiyuan pushed a chair out of the room and said, "Why don't I go with her?"
"You?" Aunt Zhou looked at him in disbelief.
"Ruiyuan, haven't you always been reluctant to go out?"
Zhou Ruiyuan pushed a chair over to Du Wanchun's side and slowly looked outside. "Mother, sometimes we can't hide forever."
Aunt Zhou's eyes narrowed slightly, and she immediately understood what he meant. "Alright, with you by Wanchun's side, I feel at ease."
Zhou Zhao walked over and said, "Brother, won't it be inconvenient for you to go like this?"
Zhou Ruiyuan replied, "It's alright. We need a cart to transport all these radishes. I'll have my third brother borrow a horse-drawn cart from the Wang family at the village entrance later."
At the village entrance, the Wang family was an elderly couple without children. Like the Zhou family, they were not well-liked by the villagers. However, they were exceptionally kind to the Zhou family, and were very generous in lending them a bowl of rice or a horse-drawn carriage.
Aunt Zhou thought it was a good idea, and quickly picked out a few good ones from the pile of radishes and handed them to Zhou Zhao, saying, "Go and tell Uncle Wang to borrow the carriage, and give these to them while you're at it."
Zhou Zhao took it and nodded, saying, "Okay, Mother, I'll go right away."
He took the radish, turned around, and left the house for the village entrance.
