Chapter 282 The Mastermind is Caught
Everyone looked at the servant on the ground with surprise.
"Who are you? What do you want by coming to our Zhou family?!" The Third Prince stepped forward and asked fiercely.
The servant knelt on the ground, trembling with fear, "I didn't know, I was just passing by!"
Zhou Ruiyuan grabbed his shirt by the back, pulled him close, and grabbed his neck, coldly saying, "Just passing by? I clearly saw you lurking around outside the door."
The servant lowered his head, cold sweat pouring down his face, and still tried to argue, "My lord, I really was just passing by. I saw some noise in the courtyard and was curious to take a look. I didn't expect that I would be dragged in by you as soon as I stood up to look."
Seeing that he refused to speak, Zhou Ruiyuan released his grip, turned around and said to the two constables who had followed him, "Take this thief to the yamen."
If they were taken to the yamen (government office), they would certainly be subjected to punishment.
The servant was so frightened that he immediately knelt down and kowtowed, saying, "Sir, I was just passing by and did not commit any crime. How can you take me to the yamen like this?"
He shouted loudly, hoping that all the nearby villagers would see it.
At this moment, Wei Xun came out and said, "Lord Zhou."
Zhou Ruiyuan looked up at him, a puzzled expression on his face.
Wei Xun whispered a few words in his ear.
Upon hearing this, Zhou Ruiyuan waved his hand and ordered the constables, "Release him."
The Third Prince and Granny Zhou hurriedly said, "Ruiyuan, are we just going to let him go like this?"
Zhou Ruiyuan winked at them intently, then replied, "Mm."
The Third Prince and Granny Zhou immediately understood and didn't say anything more.
Upon hearing Zhou Ruiyuan's instructions, the yamen runners released the servant.
Seeing that he had survived a close call, the servant ran away as fast as he could, fearing that Zhou Ruiyuan would regret it.
As soon as the servant left, Wei Xun immediately chased after him.
Aunt Zhou came over and asked Zhou Ruiyuan, "What did Xiao Wei say to you just now?"
Zhou Ruiyuan replied, "He said this guy looks tough, and you probably won't get anything out of him by forcing him. It's better to release him first, then follow him and find the person behind it all."
Aunt Zhou suddenly realized, "So that's how it is."
Du Wanchun remained silent, glancing thoughtfully in the direction Wei Xun and the others had just left.
Meanwhile, Wei Xun followed the servant all the way to Cheng'an County.
The servant was rather clever; instead of going directly to the inn to find the princess, he circled around the city and found a dilapidated temple to rest in before finally going to the inn early the next morning.
Wei Xun was a smart man, so he wasn't in a hurry and patiently waited with him until the next morning.
Inside the inn, the princess had been waiting for news. When the servant arrived, she asked with delight, "Well, is that woman dead or not?"
The servant lowered his head, timid and hesitant to reply.
The princess sensed something was wrong and continued to ask, "Speak up, what exactly happened?"
The servant then stammered, "Princess, we were discovered when we went to poison her."
Upon hearing this, the princess raised her hand and slapped him across the face, saying, "You idiot, you can even detect poisoning someone."
The servant covered his swollen face and said with his head down, "Princess, we were very careful, but the chickens and ducks in the Zhou family's backyard were really too fierce. They actually pecked our people to death!"
The princess listened, raised her eyes, and sneered, "Do you think I'm a fool?"
After saying that, he raised his hand and slapped the servant again, "A few guards aren't even as good as a few chickens and ducks?"
