Chapter 39 Making Money by Selling Perfume
The maids sniffed it too, "Madam, I can smell it! It smells so good!"
Madam Fang quickly looked around, "Where is this fragrance coming from?"
When Du Wanchun saw her ask this, she quickly took out the small bottle of perfume from her bosom and handed it to Madam Fang, saying, "Madam, is this what you're talking about?"
Mrs. Fang took two steps forward, bent down slightly to sniff, and immediately smiled, "That's right, this is it."
Du Wanchun smiled and said, "This is a fragrant dew that my mother just made. Would you like to try it, Madam?"
Mrs. Fang took it with delight, poured a little on her wrist, and then smelled it.
Then, she closed her eyes and gently savored the fragrance.
Du Wanchun asked her, "Madam, do you like this fragrance?"
Madam Fang quickly looked at her and asked, "Did you really make this perfume?"
Du Wanchun nodded and said, "That's right, we did it."
Madam Fang looked at the two of them with admiration, "What excellent craftsmanship! The perfume you make is even better than the ones that are tributes from the Western Regions."
Aunt Zhou was slightly taken aback, then quickly said modestly, "It's not that my skills are good, it's just that the soil and water here are good, which makes the flowers smell fragrant."
Madam Fang smiled and nodded, "That's right, Cheng'an County is indeed a good place."
After she finished speaking, she stared at the bottle of perfume for a long time, then asked, "Could you sell me this bottle of perfume?"
A smile appeared between Du Wanchun's brows as she slowly said, "If Madam likes it, we can give you this bottle of perfume."
Madam Fang was slightly surprised. Looking at the two simply dressed peasant women in front of her, she was quite taken aback. She put the fragrant dew in her sleeve and then smiled and said, "We Fang family members don't usually accept gifts for no reason. Since you gave me the fragrant dew, I will return the favor with a small gift."
After saying this, he called to a maid behind him, "Give this young lady five taels of silver."
"Five taels?!" Aunt Zhou was stunned.
Du Wanchun was also quite surprised. "Madam, five taels, isn't that too much?"
Madam Fang examined the perfume in her hand. "It's not much. I usually buy a bottle of top-quality perfume for ten taels of silver."
Du Wanchun quickly accepted the silver and thanked Madam Fang, saying, "Thank you, Madam Fang."
Madam Fang was so fond of the fragrant dew in her hand that she not only gave Du Wanchun five taels of silver, but also sent someone to deliver two chickens to them.
Du Wanchun and Aunt Zhou sat in the carriage for a long time, still in a daze, holding the silver and the chicken.
"Wanchun, were you dreaming just now?" Aunt Zhou stared blankly ahead.
Du Wanchun stuffed the silver in her hand into hers, saying, "Mother, feel this silver."
Aunt Zhou bent down and carefully rubbed the silver in her hand. Suddenly, she came back to her senses and exclaimed, "Wanchun, we're so lucky today! The first bottle of perfume we made has already sold!"
Du Wanchun held her hand and said, "Yes, Mother, your skills are excellent, you won't have to worry about not having customers."
Aunt Zhou nodded. "Let's go back quickly and make some more fragrant dew."
"Yes, Mother, let's pick some more flowers while we're at it," Du Wanchun replied with a smile.
As the two women were talking, the two chickens that Mrs. Fang had given them began to cluck.
Du Wanchun quickly looked down and saw that the two old hens had laid two eggs with their rear ends touching.
The round egg landed at their feet.
"Oh my, this hen has laid an egg!" Aunt Zhou was overjoyed. She picked up an egg and carefully examined it in her hand. She never expected that the hen she had just gotten her hands on would lay an egg in the carriage.
Du Wanchun bent down and picked up the other egg; it was still warm.
"Giggle giggle..."
The two hens crowed again, raised their heads, and soon laid two more eggs.
This made Aunt Zhou extremely happy. "Normally, an old hen lays at most one egg a day, but these two hens are really good at laying eggs, laying two in one go."
Du Wanchun smiled and then reached out to touch the chicken's feathers.
The old hen lifted her rear end, and another egg rolled out.
Looking at the rolled-out eggs, Aunt Zhou couldn't help but sigh, "They've laid more! These chickens at Master Fang's house really know how to lay eggs!"
Du Wanchun was also overjoyed, "Mother, quickly pick up the eggs!"
"Okay, Wanchun, you hold the carriage steady, I'll collect them." Aunt Zhou hadn't recovered from the joy of earning five taels of silver when she was immersed in the joy of collecting eggs.
When the carriage arrived at her doorstep, Aunt Zhou wrapped a dozen or so eggs in her clothes and went home.
"Zhao'er, Feng'er, come out quickly, it's time to eat eggs."
They've been poor for so long, they haven't eaten eggs in ages.
Zhou Zhao jogged over and, seeing the round eggs, happily said, "Mom, I'll take them to the kitchen to cook."
Aunt Zhou took out five eggs and handed them to him, then took the rest to the small woodshed in the backyard.
Du Wanchun followed behind her, carrying the two old hens to the backyard and locking them up with the two skinny ducks.
Zhou Ruiyuan was tending the fire by the boiler when he heard the noise and immediately strode over.
Du Wanchun showed him the five taels of silver in her hand, "Husband, look, what is this?"
