Chapter 459 I scared myself.
Ma Tao'er quickly sat up, lit the candle, and discovered that a cup on the table had broken.
She stood there stunned, staring incredulously at the shards of the cup on the ground.
"How could that be? I remember putting the cup in the table before I went to sleep."
The table is so big that the cups won't fall off unless there's an earthquake.
Ma Tao'er's face turned deathly pale instantly. Looking at the cup, she recalled the nightmare she had just had and almost cried out in alarm.
"Who's there? Who's inside?"
She sensed someone in the room, so she quickly took a few steps back, huddled in the corner of the bed, and wrapped herself tightly in the blanket.
However, the room was quiet; there wasn't a sound.
There was no wind outside tonight, and it was so quiet that you could hear her own breathing.
After sitting quietly for a while, Ma Tao'er breathed a sigh of relief. However, just then, there was a knock on the door.
"Thump thump thump! Thump thump thump!"
Ma Tao'er trembled with fright, and the hairs on her body stood on end.
She dared not speak, dared not move.
The knocking on the door continued, but no one answered.
"Who's there? Who's outside?" Ma Tao'er couldn't take it anymore and shouted towards the door.
The knocking on the door grew faster and faster.
Ma Tao'er's face was deathly pale. She clutched the quilt tightly in her hands and dared not utter another word.
After an unknown amount of time, the knocking on the door stopped.
Ma Tao'er's complexion gradually improved. She slowly got off the bed and carefully went to the door.
There was no sound outside the door. She breathed a sigh of relief and prepared to go back to bed to continue sleeping.
As she turned around, the window behind her suddenly creaked.
Ma Tao'er's steps froze instantly; she vaguely sensed someone walking towards her from behind.
Tap tap, tap tap.
He spoke very softly and approached Ma Tao'er step by step.
Ma Tao'er froze on the spot, her body trembling violently, cold sweat streaming down her forehead.
Just then, a gust of wind blew in, and the window creaked again. Ma Tao'er was so chilled by the sudden cold that she got goosebumps all over her body.
Ma Tao'er wanted to look behind her, but she didn't dare to turn to the side.
She clenched her fists, wanting to leave, but her feet seemed to be frozen in place; she couldn't move them.
"Who? Who's behind us?"
Ma Tao'er spoke in a trembling voice.
But there was no response from behind except for the cold wind.
Ma Tao'er's mind is filled with the portrait she saw at the Zhou family's house today. To her, the person behind her is the one she has always longed to marry.
She panicked, closed her eyes, and trembled as she said, "Young Master Zhou, I was wrong. I shouldn't have provoked you. Please let me go! I don't want to die. I still want to live a few more good days."
"Young Master Zhou, I won't marry you, please let me go!"
She was talking to herself.
The window behind her moved again, and the footsteps grew closer and closer, as if they were about to touch her back.
As the footsteps stopped, another cup on the table rolled to the floor with a thud.
"Ah! Help!"
Ma Tao'er screamed and ran forward. Perhaps because she was too anxious, she accidentally bumped into the door frame and fainted.
As Ma Tao'er fell to the ground, the three large wildcats scattered in all directions.
It turned out that there was no one behind her, no ghosts, just three big wildcats.
It was the stray cat that pushed open the window to let the cold wind in, and it was the stray cat that knocked over the cup on the table.
As for the footsteps, it was just Ma Tao'er scaring herself; she was hallucinating.
At that moment, the door was forcibly pushed open.
The innkeeper, turning to the mute maid beside him, asked, "Is this the guest you're talking about?"
The maid gestured, "Yes, sir, she was the one shouting and yelling in the room tonight. I knocked on the door, but she wouldn't open it."
The shopkeeper frowned. "Go find two people to fetch a doctor."
The maid bowed, made a gesture, and turned to leave.
This maid was a mute girl taken in by the innkeeper. She usually helped with cleaning at the inn. Tonight, when she got up to use the bathroom, she heard noises coming from Ma Tao'er's room, so she wanted to knock on the door to ask what was going on.
To her surprise, Ma Tao'er not only refused to open the door, but also started shouting incoherently inside. Worried, she called the shopkeeper over again.
The shopkeeper was a kind person and hired a doctor for Ma Tao'er.
The doctor bandaged her head wound, gave her some hemostatic medicine, and left.
The next day, Ma Tao'er woke up in her bed, still shaken. "A ghost! A ghost!"
