Chapter 623 Mr. Yuan's Marriage
Mr. Yuan's residence is next to the Hai family's. Although it is an old house, it is still quite comfortable.
These days, Hai Qingyang is recuperating in the palace, so Mr. Yuan brought Yi'er and Yu'er to his residence to teach them to read.
Du Wanchun brought some food from the palace for the two children.
"mother!"
Yu'er jogged over, smiling as she took the food box, eager to see what was inside.
Yi'er calmed down considerably. As the eldest son, he truly displayed the demeanor of a crown prince, welcoming his mother and younger sister into the house and personally pouring them tea.
"Mother, Mianmian, come and have some tea."
Du Wanchun took the teacup and looked at Yi'er, noticing that he had grown taller and was gradually taking on the appearance of a young man.
"How have you been studying with Mr. Yuan these past few days?" Du Wanchun asked him.
Yi'er replied, "I'm good at studying, but I haven't learned horseback riding and archery in a long time."
Hai Qingyang used to teach them these things by hand, but now that he's injured, he hasn't been able to teach them for a long time.
Not long after Yi'er finished speaking, she asked softly, "How is Mr. Qingyang's injury healing?"
Du Wanchun smiled and said, "Soon, he will be able to return to his residence in another half month. You can bother him there."
Yi'er was overjoyed and quickly turned to look at Yu'er.
Yu'er was eating the food in the food box, nodding and smiling as she chewed.
Little Mianmian walked to Du Wanchun's side and looked around: "Mother, where is Sister Dong'er? I haven't seen her since I came in."
Du Wanchun looked up and realized that Mr. Yuan was not in the room.
She instantly understood why, and smiled meaningfully, "Sister Dong'er should have gone to the backyard. Please wait a moment, she should be back soon."
Little Mianmian smiled and nodded.
Not long after, Dong'er returned, her cheeks still rosy.
Little Mianmian thought she was hot, so she quickly picked up a piece of fruit from the side and handed it to her, saying, "Sister Dong'er, this is cool, you should try it."
Dong'er had been in the palace for several years, always as the lowest-ranking palace maid. Later, she was appreciated by Consort Li and was arranged to work in the East Palace, serving under Du Wanchun.
She had suffered a lot in the palace, and was truly grateful to the Crown Princess who treated her like a younger sister.
Xiao Mianmian treated her like an older sister, which often made her feel flattered and overwhelmed.
Dong'er accepted the fruit and bowed, saying, "Thank you, Princess."
Seeing that she accepted the fruit, Xiao Mianmian picked up a fruit and ate it herself.
Dong'er held the fruit in her hand for a long time without eating it.
Du Wanchun asked Dong'er, "Does Dong'er have any family?"
Dong'er paused for a moment, then shook her head and said, "I have an older brother, but we were separated a long time ago, and his whereabouts are now unknown."
Du Wanchun felt pity for her and said, "From now on, we'll treat you as family. The Emperor once said that he asked if you wanted to leave the palace. If you do, we will let you leave."
As she spoke, she looked around and said, "This Yuan residence is not bad either; it's a good place."
Dong'er lowered her head, her eyes red, somewhat incredulous. "Your Majesty, Mr. Yuan and I are merely nodding acquaintances, not what you think..."
Du Wanchun looked puzzled. "Really? But Mr. Yuan didn't say that."
Dong'er's face turned even redder instantly.
Du Wanchun smiled and said, "Don't worry, as long as you two are in love, we will grant you a marriage and marry you from the palace into the Yuan family."
Dong'er's face was full of disbelief. She did have some feelings for Mr. Yuan, but she never thought she would marry him.
She felt that she was of lowly status and not good enough for Mr. Yuan.
Du Wanchun guessed her thoughts and said slowly, "You are considered my head maid in my palace. Don't worry about not being good enough for the Yuan family. I will give you a dowry later."
Dong'er's eyes welled up with tears as she knelt before Du Wanchun and performed a deep bow, saying, "Thank you, Your Majesty."
Du Wanchun helped her up.
Dong'er quickly wiped away the tears on her face and turned around to add some tea to her cup.
Meanwhile, outside the Yuan residence, an assassin sat leaning against a wall in an alley, sword in hand, wearing a bamboo hat and staring at the entrance.
Seeing that there were fewer and fewer people around, he immediately changed into an old woman's clothes, took a vegetable basket, and headed towards the Yuan residence.
Several palace eunuchs were guarding the entrance to the Yuan residence.
The young eunuch stopped him and asked, "Who are you, and what are you doing here?"
The assassin, head bowed and trembling, said, "I've come to deliver vegetables to the Yuan residence. Could you two gentlemen please go inside and inform them?"
"Send vegetables? What vegetables?" The little eunuch looked at the vegetable basket in his hand with a puzzled expression.
The assassin took out a large white radish from inside and said, "These are radishes we grew ourselves."
