Chapter 654 Going to see Grandmother
Aruo heard the sound and immediately stopped what she was doing, turning around to look at her. "Mianmian, you're awake."
Mianmian looked at the sweat on his forehead and said with heartache, "You don't need to do these heavy chores. Let's go and have breakfast first."
After she finished speaking, she walked towards him.
Aruo quickly said, "Mianmian, this place is dirty, don't come over."
The backyard was littered with sawdust and some tree trunks covered in soil.
Mianmian paused, realizing that she had been in such a hurry to get up that she hadn't put on her shoes.
She happened to step into the mud.
Aruo immediately put down the axe in his hand. "Mianmian, don't move, I'm coming over."
Mianmian stood obediently without moving.
Aruo strode up to her, picked her up, and carried her into the house.
He carefully placed Mianmian on the chair, then turned around, fetched a basin of clean water, and washed her feet.
These tasks used to be done by palace maids.
Aruo usually stays outside the palace, but now that he's in this old house, he has to do everything himself.
Mianmian stared at his drooping hair, slightly lost in thought.
After a long silence, she suddenly asked, "Aruo, how were you during those years in Nanyi?"
Aruo paused for a moment, then continued washing her. "If having enough to eat and clothes to wear is good, then it is good. If being beaten and scolded is bad, then it is bad."
Mianmian's usually smiling eyes revealed a hint of sadness as she gazed at him absentmindedly and slowly said, "If only I had met you sooner."
Aruo laughed and said, "It's early enough. The time I spent in Xuan Yue Kingdom is not shorter than that in Nan Yi."
“No,” Mianmian retorted, “I meant earlier.”
"Even earlier?" Aruo smiled, taking a handkerchief to dry her feet. "When was 'even earlier'?"
Mianmian looked at him intently and said in a serious tone, "Of course, it was when you were just born."
Aruo paused slightly, holding the handkerchief in mid-air.
Mianmian continued, "If I could have met you when you were just born, I would have taken you away from Nanyi and brought you to our Changliu Village."
"Changliu Village may not be as nice as the palace, but here we have no worries about food or clothing, and we are free."
"That way, you won't be scolded by your father, you won't be looked down upon because of your mother's background, and you won't have your legs broken by the princess's men."
"More importantly, you don't have to be a hostage in the Southern Barbarian Kingdom; you can just be yourself."
You can go wherever you want.
As Mianmian spoke, she put on her shoes, slowly stood up, and came up behind him.
Aruo had his back to her, his eyes slightly red. After a long while, he turned around and smiled, "It's a pity there are no hypotheticals, but it's fine now. Now I'm not a hostage from the Southern Barbarian Kingdom, I'm the princess's guard."
Before Mianmian could reply, he walked towards the backyard. "Princess, go and have breakfast first. We're going to Cheng'an County later."
Mianmian was immediately disappointed. She wanted to say something to him, but Aruo never gave her the chance.
She slowly raised her eyes to look at the corn porridge in the kitchen, gritted her teeth, turned around, and began to eat it in large mouthfuls.
After breakfast, Aruo had already prepared a carriage and arrived at the gate of the old house.
Mianmian changed her clothes and strode into the carriage.
They had been in Changliu Village for several days but had not yet visited their grandmother.
Mianmian misses her a little.
Within Cheng'an County.
Aunt Zhou and the Third Prince have been living in seclusion in Cheng'an County for three years with Zhouzhou.
They lived in the house that Du Wanchun had bought in the past, next to Zhang Qiuhe's house, and continued to look after their own incense shop.
The incense shop was located in the village. Doctor Xu and Du Damei each lived in a courtyard. Although they were from two different families, they got along like one family.
Du Damei's daughter and Miao Niangzi's son are already engaged, making it a double blessing.
Zhang Qiuhe's son and daughter have grown up quite a bit and can now help manage the shop.
Even though Du Wanchun didn't personally come to Cheng'an County to manage these shops over the years, Zhang Qiuhe and Wang Qiu were able to manage them very well.
None of them expected Mianmian to come back alone.
Just as Zhang Qiuhe was about to leave for her shop, she looked up and saw a carriage heading towards the entrance of the Zhou residence.
She sensed something and quickly pulled Wang Qiu aside, saying, "Husband, do you think Wan Chun has returned?"
Wang Qiu laughed and said, "Wan Chun is the Empress now, how can she just come back whenever she wants?"
Zhang Qiuhe shook her head, "No, no, let's go to the Zhou residence and take a look."
Wang Qiu smiled helplessly, "Alright, I'll go with you."
Zhang Qiuhe pulled Wang Qiu and hurriedly walked towards the Zhou family's house.
Just then, Xiao Mianmian's carriage stopped in front of the Zhou residence.
Aruo glanced at the entrance of the Zhou residence, then turned to Mianmian and asked, "Is this the place?"
Mianmian pulled back the carriage curtain and looked inside, then smiled and said, "That's right, this is the place."
She had lived in this mansion for some time, so she remembered it very clearly.
Aruo parked the carriage and then helped Mianmian down.
Mianmian walked towards the door, but was stopped by two servants.
"Young lady, who are you looking for?"
