Chapter 21 But he lost his Zhaozhao.

Upon receiving the news, Madam Ye hurriedly summoned her maids and servants to come and see him with umbrellas. Seeing that he was dripping wet, she couldn't help but feel sorry for him: "What are you all standing there for? Can't you see that the young master has been caught in the rain? Quickly prepare hot water and clean clothes, and also tell the kitchen to make a bowl of ginger soup."

Lu Minghe looked up at her, and only after she kept urging him did he silently go to bathe and change his clothes.

Madam Ye had been waiting outside. When he came out in clean clothes, she brought him ginger soup and urged him to drink it quickly so he wouldn't catch a cold.

Lu Minghe took the soup, lowered his eyes and drank a mouthful of the hot ginger soup, but he did not feel warm. Instead, he felt very cold.

He put down the bowl and asked softly, "Mother, I met Bailuo today. Bailuo told me that Zhaozhao has returned all the things I sent over and told me not to bother her anymore." His eyes were deep as he stared intently at his mother: "Has anyone from the Shen family returned the things?"

Upon hearing this, Madam Ye frowned in displeasure: "How dare a mere maid speak to you like that? She is indeed a daughter raised by a military man; even her servants are unruly."

"Mother," Lu Minghe emphasized, "has the Shen family returned the items?"

Dissatisfied with his accusatory attitude, Madam Ye clutched her chest and said, "How would I know? Since the two families dissolved the engagement, no one from the Shen family has come to visit. The other day, when Zhaozhao got married, your father kindly sent someone to deliver gifts, but Shen Mingjiang threw them all out." She comforted her, "The maid said she returned them, but who knows if she just threw them away somewhere? She just ran into you and gave you a few words to make you feel bad. There are plenty of fish in the sea. Zhaozhao is already married, why are you so fixated on this?"

Lu Minghe lowered his eyes and remained silent.

He drank the ginger soup in one gulp and said, "I remember what Mother said. I'm tired and want to rest. Mother, you can go back first."

Madam Ye wanted to give him a few more instructions, but seeing his really bad expression, she had no choice but to hold back and reluctantly took the maid and servants back.

After everyone left, Lu Minghe called his attendant Lu Yang over. He pondered for a moment, then picked up a pen and wrote down several names, times, and places on a piece of paper, handing it to Lu Yang: "Go and investigate what happened during this period. Be careful in your actions, and don't let Madam discover anything amiss."
