Chapter 142 Going south!

The fast food restaurant was noisy.

Li Wei, wearing a green camouflage uniform that had been washed to a pale color, and gray Liberation shoes, was holding a stainless steel tray and moving carefully among the crowd.

On the plate, there was only a bland dish of shredded potatoes with vinegar, and next to it were four large bowls of overflowing white rice stacked high.

His appearance, coupled with the disproportionate amount of food on his plate, attracted curious or contemptuous glances from many diners.

But he didn't care and walked straight to a small table in the corner.

Sitting at the table was a small, thin boy wearing old children's clothes of an indeterminate color.

Li Wei put down the plate and pushed a bowl of rice in front of the boy. His voice was a little rough: "Eat quickly, eat quickly, there's plenty of rice."

After saying that, he picked up the remaining three bowls of rice and started to eat them noisily.

Sometimes when he felt choked, he would pick up a piece of shredded potato with his chopsticks and savor it carefully.

But the amount of shredded potatoes was too little, so he mostly just stuffed himself with rice.

Li Cheng ate rice in small mouthfuls, his face pale.

Seeing that Li Wei had barely touched the food, he held it in for a long time, and finally couldn't help asking in a hoarse voice: "Li Wei, if you don't eat the food, how will you have the energy to go to work in the afternoon?"

Li Wei paused in his eating, then continued as if nothing had happened, and replied vaguely, "Rice is enough to fill you up."

Li Cheng put down his chopsticks and stared at him with his dark eyes.

That look made Li Wei feel a little uneasy, and he even slowed down the speed at which he ate his rice.

This kid's eyes are so weird, like he can see through people's hearts.

Being stared at like this, Li Wei could hardly eat anymore. He simply put down his bowl and chopsticks, stared back, and waited for the little guy's next words.

As expected, Li Cheng spoke in a very soft voice: "Li Wei, please send me to an orphanage."

Li Weiyi got anxious when he heard this and shook his head violently. Because there was still rice stuffed in his cheeks, the sound was puffing.

Gulp!

He swallowed the rice and protested, "No, no! I came from there, and I tell you, it's not a good place. Don't even think about it!"

Hearing this, Li Cheng lowered his head, his shoulders twitching, and tears falling down his face.

Li Wei was in a panic and wanted to help him wipe it, but when he stretched out his hand, he saw the mud and dust everywhere and retracted his hand in disappointment.

"Cry, why are you crying? Stop crying and eat quickly." Li Wei urged awkwardly, and couldn't help looking around.

Li Cheng sobbed for a while before saying sullenly, "Aren't you going to save money to get married? Now all your money is going to my medical treatment. How are you going to get married?"

Li Weiyi was actually amused when he heard this. He moved closer, lowered his voice, and said mysteriously:

"I'm telling you, did you know that the developer's daughter came to inspect our construction site yesterday? I happened to see that young lady, I think her name is Jiang Xue. She's so damn beautiful, hehe."

He winked and lowered his voice, "Just wait and see, watch as your godfather uses his astonishing charm to win over a beautiful, wealthy woman, become her CEO, and reach the pinnacle of life!"

"When the time comes, we'll go to America to treat your illness. It's covered!"

Li Cheng curled his lips and wrinkled his face, obviously not believing his nonsense.

After a long while, he finally raised his head and looked at Li Wei with his eyes that were too clear. He asked seriously, "Why are you so nice to me?"

Li Wei was stunned by the question. He felt like he had heard this question somewhere before and it sounded familiar.

But he didn't think much about it. He waved his hand carelessly, puffed out his chest, and answered confidently:

"I picked you up, so you are my son?"

"As your father, of course I have to treat you well!"

-----------------

Su Mo was wearing a bright red peacock official robe and riding a white horse, walking side by side with Gu Jinzhi, who was also dressed in military uniform.

"A total of 2,073 flintlock rifles have been hastily manufactured during this period, barely enough to equip a pure firearms regiment."

"The instructors I assigned are already intensifying their training, but they are insufficient in number. I don't think they will be needed for this reinforcement."

His horse was led by an official from the Ministry of Works, while he held a small booklet, flipping through it as he made his report.

"As for artillery, the big twelve-pounder can't be mass-produced yet."

"Fifty-eight three-pound and six-pound bronze cannons were built."

"However, we haven't got the shrapnel yet. If we want to kill the enemy efficiently, we have to get close and rely on grapeshot."

As he spoke, he suddenly remembered something and said hurriedly:

"Oh, yes. I also built a hand-cranked Gatling gun for Miss Jiang. It has over 10,000 rounds of ammunition. They are all custom-made with cardboard shells by a master craftsman. However, the misfire rate is quite high."

Zeng Yi on the other side frowned as he listened to this.

Time is too tight, and neither the quantity nor the quality of firearms can play a decisive role.

In the past month, the Beijing Camp and the Fuyun Border Army were disbanded and reorganized. Excluding the most elite Fuyun cavalry, the infantry had gathered about 70,000 to 80,000 people.

However, without the support of firearms, it is hard to say how much effect this mixed force of new and old soldiers, which has just started training, can have.

Could it be that they really allowed Gu Jinzhi to go south to provide assistance with only more than 10,000 cavalrymen?

Although, it is impossible that the bandits' 600,000-strong army are all combat soldiers.

Even a 20% to 30% ratio of combat troops would be a big deal.

But this is too much of a stretch.

"Brother Dazhi," Zeng Yi finally couldn't help but speak, "Isn't this too risky?"

He pulled the reins, and the horse pawed its hooves uneasily.

"Why not... stabilize the capital first, and wait for my sister-in-law to break through..."
