At the end of September, the capital is already filled with autumn.
The backyard of the Gu family's old house is no longer as lush and green as it was in midsummer.
Most of the vegetable plots that were once lush and green are now empty.
The remaining half is planted with some cold-resistant cabbages and radishes. Judging from their growth, it is almost time for harvest.
In the center of the garden, the pond water is like a mirror, reflecting the vast and boundless sky and the crooked old trees with yellow leaves.
Suddenly, a bright red color broke the tranquil autumn scenery.
Jiang Xinyue, wearing a fiery red chest-length skirt, quietly landed by the pond.
She lowered her head slightly and glanced at the old man who was sitting on a folding stool and fishing leisurely out of the corner of her eye.
"Gu Litong, why did you call me here?"
Her tone was impatient.
Gu Litong didn't turn around or speak immediately, but just pointed to the empty seat next to him and the brand new fishing gear next to it.
Jiang Xinyue snorted coldly.
"I don't have time for that. If you have something to say, say it now. If you have something to say, fart now."
Gu Litong turned his head slowly, his deep wrinkles squeezed together.
"We're old classmates after all, and you can't even give me this little bit of face?"
"face?"
Jiang Xinyue seemed to have heard some huge joke.
"Zhao Funing died, but you didn't."
"From that day on, you, Gu Litong, no longer have any face in my presence."
These words were like a needle, piercing Gu Litong's heart accurately.
He subconsciously covered his chest, and his hunched back slumped even deeper.
There was dead silence by the pond.
After a long while, he finally spoke in a hoarse voice: "You, after all these years, haven't changed at all."
Jiang Xinyue looked at his painful expression, finally pulled out a chair and sat down, but did not touch the fishing rod.
She crossed her legs and asked again in a cold voice, "What's going on?"
Gu Litong turned his head and stared at the water again.
"Why are you stuck in your realm and refusing to break through to Grandmaster?"
"What's the point of breaking through?" She sneered, her tone tinged with sarcasm. "Do you think I don't know what Old Man Zeng and the others are planning?"
"Wait until I become a martial immortal, so I can go to the front line and fight four people alone?"
"Do you think I'm stupid?"
Gu Litong sighed, "Others don't dare to say it, but Teacher Zeng... wouldn't have that kind of thought."
"Heh," Jiang Xinyue retorted directly, "After the freshman competition that year, old man Zeng, the dignified dean, didn't accept Yunsheng, Zhang Luye, or you, Gu Litong. Instead, he accepted me, the most unworthy one, as his disciple."
"It's because my Jiang family has the 'Four Seasons Sword Formation'. If I become a Martial Immortal, I'll be the best laborer."
"I couldn't figure it out when I was young. If I still can't figure it out now, wouldn't I have lived these decades in vain?"
Before Jiang Xinyue finished speaking, Gu Litong's fishing float suddenly sank.
He subconsciously lifted the rod, but it turned out to be empty, with nothing on the hook.
A trace of annoyance flashed across the old man's face. As he put the bait back on and swung his rod into the water, he muttered, "Don't say angry words, and don't project other people's thoughts onto Teacher Zeng."
"Based on my understanding of Mr. Zeng, at that time... he might have simply wanted to take in a sweet and soft female disciple."
"The Yunshengs are noisy and naughty, they are not enough to annoy the old man."
"You..." Jiang Xinyue found herself speechless.
Besides, what she said just now was just out of anger.
Gu Litong smiled, leaned back and leaned against the chair.
"Let's not talk about these old things... I came to you this time because I have something to ask of you."
Jiang Xinyue raised her eyebrows, "Gu Litong, you still have the nerve to ask me for help? What? I gave my granddaughter to your Gu family for free, isn't it enough? Now, even an old woman like me is taking advantage of her?"
Gu Litong smiled bitterly and shook his head.
In his mind, the girl who accompanied him fishing by the pond more than a month ago and who ran away "in panic" under the influence of his emotions appeared.
Thinking of her every smile and frown, he sighed and said, "It's me, Gu Litong. I'm sorry, Jiang Xinyue."
Jiang Xinyue sneered and remained unmoved.
Gu Litong turned his head and looked at Jiang Xinyue with his cloudy old eyes, his tone extremely sincere.
"Jiang Xinyue, how about this being the last time I, Gu Litong, ask you for help?"
Jiang Xinyue gritted her teeth secretly. Somehow, she felt inexplicably depressed and a feeling of irritability surged in her heart.
She waved her hands impatiently, as if trying to drive something away.
"explain!"
Gu Litong turned his head and stared at the calm pool water in front of him again.
A smile appeared on his face and his tone became calm.
"If I die, can you... help me take care of the Gu family?"
After thinking for a moment, he added, "I don't need to be rich or famous, as long as my family is together...that's enough."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Xinyue suddenly froze.
She turned her head suddenly and stared at Gu Litong's old and decayed face.
"what you up to?"
Gu Litong didn't answer Jiang Xinyue's question, but said to himself, "It may not come to that, but I just want to let you know in advance."
Jiang Xinyue frowned, and her bright face was stained with a layer of gloom.
"Your life was bought back by Fu Ning with her own life, so you'd better not squander it!"
......
The two words "Funing" made Gu Litong's vision blurred for a moment.
Countless memories came flooding back, sweet, bitter, sour, astringent, all kinds of emotions mixed together, making his heart feel uneasy.
There was dead silence by the pool, and the two did not speak for a long time.
