Chapter 153 Are you really going to just stand by and watch our daughter die?
King Kang waved for his attendants to leave and began pacing back and forth in the room. This was the greatest crisis of his life; if he couldn't overcome it, his life would end.
Outside, his attendant Qiu Cheng left the courtyard, hesitated for a moment, and then turned to head towards the inner courtyard. Because it was late at night, the guards at the gate between the inner and outer courtyards were dozing off, so he walked over quietly without attracting their attention.
Upon entering the inner courtyard, he went straight to the princess's residence. Years ago, the princess had helped him once, and now he was relaying the message as a way of repaying her kindness. Whether the princess could escape this calamity depended on her own fate.
Soon they arrived at the Princess's courtyard, only to find it completely dark inside. The Princess had long since fallen out of favor. Although she had the support of the Minister's mansion, the Minister's family knew her situation in the Prince's residence and had never stood up for her. As a result, the people in the Prince's residence treated her with increasing contempt, to the point that there were hardly any servants in the large courtyard.
However, Qiu Cheng didn't dare to go in directly, but instead barked like a dog a few times. The Kang Prince's residence didn't keep dogs; if the Kang Princess or her maids were alert, they would likely come out to check.
Sure enough, after a short while, the princess's personal maid, Suqin, came out. Qiu Cheng, who was hidden in the shadows, only came out after seeing that there was no movement around after Suqin came out.
He approached Suqin, who was about to scream in fright, but Qiu Cheng covered her mouth. He lowered his voice and said, "The princess is in mortal danger tonight."
After saying that, he quickly left to do the things that Prince Kang had arranged for him. Suqin was stunned for a moment, then immediately ran inside. When she arrived at Princess Kang's bedroom, she walked to the bedside and whispered, "Princess, Princess."
Princess Kang frowned and opened her eyes. She was in pain all over and hadn't slept soundly. "What's wrong?"
The voice was as soft as a mosquito's buzz, but Suqin still heard it. She lifted the bed curtain, bent down and whispered in Princess Kang's ear, "The prince's personal attendant, Qiu Cheng, just came and said... said that your life is in danger tonight."
Princess Kang paused for a moment, then raised her thin arm. Suqin quickly helped her up, and Princess Kang sat up against the headboard, asking, "What else did Qiu Cheng say?"
Suqin shook her head. "That was all she said, and then she left."
"Cough cough cough..." Princess Kang coughed a few times, then said breathlessly, "Go find my mother quickly, quickly."
Suqin was both shocked and frightened, and also felt heartache for Princess Kang; tears streamed down her face. She helped Princess Kang lie down, then turned and ran out. Because it was late at night, she left through a side gate of the Kang Prince's residence, and the process went relatively smoothly.
She ran all the way to the Tang residence and pounded on the door as soon as she reached the gate. After a while, the door opened, and the gatekeeper, upon seeing her, was startled but quickly let her in.
Suqin ran frantically to Madam Tang's courtyard. In a panic, Suqin knelt before Madam Tang, pleading, "Madam, please save the Princess! Please save the Princess!"
"What exactly happened?" Mrs. Tang asked anxiously.
Suqin quickly recounted how Qiu Cheng had come to Princess Kang's courtyard in the middle of the night, saying that Princess Kang's life was in danger that night. Then she cried and said, "Madam, please save the Princess! Please save the Princess!"
Madam Tang stood up and walked out, heading straight for Tang Boyang's courtyard in the outer compound. Tang Boyang had just fallen asleep when he heard she had arrived. His face darkened, he got out of bed and walked out of his room. Seeing Madam Tang's flustered expression, he frowned and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Simin's life is in danger, we must go and save her quickly." Madam Tang grabbed Tang Boyang's arm, repeated what Suqin had said, and then said, "Master, we must go and save Simin quickly."
Upon hearing her words, Tang Boyang merely frowned, showing no sign of anxiety. Madam Tang froze, staring at Tang Boyang in disbelief, and said, "What do you mean? You're not going to save Simin?"
“You believe what a maid says?” Tang Boyang said, looking at her.
"......"
This time, Madam Tang was so shocked that she couldn't utter a word. After a while, she roared at Tang Boyang, "Are you even human? Simin is your daughter, your own daughter. You know what kind of life she's living in the Kang Prince's mansion. It was one thing before, but now that her life is in danger, you're completely indifferent. Tang Boyang, are you even human?"
Tang Boyang was enraged by her words. He looked at her with a dark expression and said, "I know she is my biological daughter. I also know that she was already dying. I know even more that if I make a wrong move now, the entire Tang family will be finished, including you."
The room was silent. After a while, Mrs. Tang said with tears in her eyes, "That's the child I carried for ten months and gave birth to! You used to hold her all the time when she was little. Now she's being murdered. How can we not save her? How can we not save her?"
Tang Boyang was naturally upset, but he still said to Madam Tang with a cold face, "Send someone back with Suqin to collect evidence."
Mrs. Tang was shocked again, "You're going to just stand by and watch our daughter die?"
"Long hair, short wits, I'm not going to talk to you." Tang Boyang was about to instruct his trusted aide to handle the matter when his eldest son, Tang Lingyun, approached. Seeing Madam Tang nearly collapsing from crying, he went over to help her up and asked Tang Boyang, "Father, what's wrong?"
Tang Boyang recounted the events and then said, "You handle this matter. Send someone back with Suqin to gather evidence that Prince Kang killed his wife."
Upon hearing his words, Tang Lingyun pursed his lips tightly together, and after a while, he said, "Yes."
“You’re a cold-blooded person too.” Madam Tang pushed Tang Lingyun away forcefully and pointed at Tang Boyang and his son, saying, “For your future, for the sake of your so-called family, you can be this cold-blooded.”
Tang Boyang's face was terribly gloomy. He shouted to the outside, "Someone come here."
Two servants immediately came in, and Tang Boyang said to them, "Take Madam back. She has been suffering from headaches these past few days and cannot leave the courtyard. Please take good care of her."
This meant house arrest. Madam Tang laughed heartily: "I'd like to see what kind of end result you cold-blooded people will get?"
She turned and walked out, two servants immediately following behind her. Tang Lingyun watched Madam Tang's retreating figure with a worried expression. After the figure completely disappeared, he said to Tang Boyang, "Father, is there really no other way? Must you...must you watch your sister die?"
Tang Boyang's hands were clenched so tightly they even cracked. He walked to a chair and sat down. "Hurry up and make the arrangements; Prince Kang is about to take action."
Tang Lingyun gritted her teeth, turned around, and left. Tang Boyang leaned back in his chair for a long time. No one is truly cold-blooded; it's just that when faced with choices, some people are more rational, while others are impulsive.
He simply made the most rational choice; he did nothing wrong.
