Chapter 205 Grandfather, who will be next?
The simple carriage left the city gate, and the coachman turned around and said, "Young master, hold on tight."
After saying that, he raised his whip and lashed the horse's rump hard. The horse neighed and galloped away. Xie Lei sat in the carriage, lifted the curtain, and looked back at the majestic capital city. This was the place where he had lived for seventeen years, and he probably would never be able to return.
The carriage jolted, and Xie Lei, who had lost his balance, swayed. He lowered the curtain he was gripping tightly and let out a long sigh of relief; staying alive was the most important thing right now.
He remembered what Xie Ning'an had told him before he left: "Grandfather will soon find out about your runaway. You should stay at my wet nurse's cousin's house in the suburbs. If Grandfather can't find you after a few days, he will stop looking. Then I will arrange for someone to send you to Jingzhou."
Don't worry, I'll make arrangements over there. You won't be able to live a life of luxury like before, but you won't have to worry about food or clothing. Once things are settled at home, if you want to come back, I'll bring you back.”
"I won't be coming back," Xie Lei said softly in the carriage. In the capital and in the Xie family, no one would welcome him back.
"Young master, hold on tight, we're going to take a side road, it'll be a bit bumpy." The coachman's voice came from outside, and Xie Lei responded and leaned against the side of the carriage.
But just then, shouts came from behind, "The carriage in front, stop! Stop right now!"
Xie Lei was startled and immediately lifted the carriage curtain to look. He saw a group of people riding horses closely following behind. He recognized the people on horseback; the one in the lead was Liang Dali, the Xie family's guard commander.
"Hurry, speed up!" Xie Lei said urgently to the coachman.
The coachman panicked, but still raised his whip and lashed the horse's rump hard to speed it up. However, the carriage could never keep up with the horse's pace, and soon the people behind caught up.
"Second Young Master, the Old Master has sent me to take you back," Liang Dali shouted.
"Faster, faster, even faster!" Xie Lei shouted to the coachman.
The coachman's hands trembled with anxiety. "Young master, there's no way to go any faster."
At this moment, Liang Dali and his men blocked the front of the carriage. The coachman quickly pulled on the reins, and the carriage came to a sudden stop. Xie Lei, who was inside the carriage, almost fell over.
He settled himself in his seat, lifted the carriage curtain, and looked at Liang Dali on horseback, saying, "I will not go back with you. Go back and tell Grandfather that I am no longer a descendant of the Xie family."
“Second Young Master, you should go back and tell the old master these things yourself,” Liang Dali said.
Xie Lei gripped the carriage curtain tightly. "Liang Dali, get out of my way. I'm not going back with you."
Liang Dali remained expressionless. "If that's the case, then, Second Young Master, I apologize for the inconvenience."
As soon as he finished speaking, he waved his hand, and the carriage was immediately surrounded. Then he dismounted, walked to the carriage, looked at Xie Lei, and said, "Second Young Master, you should come back with me."
"I told you I'm not going back with you, get out of here!" Xie Lei yelled at Liang Dali.
Seeing this, Liang Dali took two more steps forward to pull Xie Lei down, but Xie Lei quickly said to the coachman, "Let's go, hurry up and go!"
The coachman, who had been terrified, gritted his teeth and cracked his whip when he heard the shout, propelling the carriage forward. The Xie family guards surrounding the carriage dared not stop it, and the carriage sped off quite a distance.
Seeing this, Liang Dali shouted, "Chase!"
Another group gave chase, with Xie Lei urging the coachman to speed up. The coachman kept saying they couldn't go any faster, whipping the horse's rump hard. But they were caught up again in no time.
Seeing this, Xie Lei dragged his crippled leg forward and forcefully stabbed the horse's rump with his dagger. His intention was to make the horse run forward in pain, but the horse was in too much pain and involuntarily reared up and galloped from side to side, causing the carriage to fall into a deep ditch by the roadside.
Xie Lei was thrown out of the carriage, his head hitting a rock, and blood immediately flowed out.
Liang Dali was shocked to see this and quickly dismounted to check on Xie Lei. He saw that Xie Lei's eyes were closed and blood was gushing out from under his head. He trembled as he tried to check Xie Lei's breathing, but he couldn't feel any breath.
Liang Dali was so frightened that he felt dizzy. He tried to feel the artery on Xie Lei's neck, but he couldn't feel any pulse.
Liang Dali was so frightened that he took a step back and fell to the ground. Xie Yun had told him to take Xie Lei back, but he hadn't said he was to kill Xie Lei. Now that Xie Lei was dead, he probably wouldn't be able to save his own life either.
His guards, seeing his appearance, all guessed what had happened, and each of them wore a look of terror on their faces.
Liang Dali sat on the ground for a while before standing up and saying, "Take the Second Young Master...back to the manor."
Now that things had come to this, he had no choice but to take Xie Lei back to apologize. Escaping was out of the question; his entire family was still with the Xie family.
The group tidied up the carriage, loaded Xie Lei's body onto it, and headed towards the Xie residence. Upon seeing Xie Yun, Liang Dali immediately knelt down, saying, "Please punish me, sir."
Xie Yun frowned deeply. "The person hasn't been found?"
After speaking, he looked at Xie Ning'an, who was kneeling on the other side, and saw that he had his head down, so Xie Yun couldn't see the expression on his face. At this moment, Liang Dali said, "No, it's...it's...Second Young Master..."
He didn't dare say anything more, and Xie Yun's brows furrowed even more. "What's wrong?"
"The second young master... is dead." Liang Dali lay prostrate on the ground.
"What did you say?"
"What?"
Xie Yun and Xie Ning'an both thought they were hallucinating. Xie Ning'an stood up, walked over to Liang Dali, and asked again, "What did you say?"
Liang Dali forced a smile and said, "The second young master fell off the carriage and died..."
He recounted what had happened, and then began to kowtow repeatedly, saying, "I have failed in my duty; please punish me, sir."
When Xie Ning'an heard that Xie Lei was dead, she swayed and almost fell over, while Xie Yun stood there for a long time without saying a word.
After a while, Xie Ning'an asked, "Where is he?"
“Outside…” Liang Dali said.
Xie Ning'an staggered as she walked out and saw Xie Lei lying on a stretcher, covered in blood and mud, his face ashen and lifeless.
He walked over, knelt down to check Xie Lei's breathing, and then whispered, "It's my fault."
After saying that, he stood up and looked back at Xie Yun standing at the door. "Grandfather, who will be next?"
"Are you blaming me?" Xie Yun seemed to have found an outlet for his anger, and he snapped at Xie Ning'an, "Whom did I do it for? Wasn't it all for the Xie clan?"
"Hehehe..." Xie Ning'an laughed, then staggered out. Xie Yun watched his back, his face terribly gloomy.
