Chapter 344 I dare not think
Butler Li Zhong left Jiang Yu's courtyard and headed towards Jiang Chengye's, wondering if this master, whose position in the mansion was awkward, would be obedient. However, this master hadn't caused trouble for a long time, so it seemed he had truly grown up.
Li Zhong sighed. When the old Duke was still alive, this lord, even though he had grandsons, acted like a child. In truth, it was because the old Duke didn't know how to discipline his children.
Whether the current dukes can discipline their children is unknown, but when they're truly angry, they can be quite ruthless. Just look at how much more docile this patriarch of their household has become compared to before; that's a clear indication.
Li Zhong's mind was racing with chaotic thoughts. When he arrived at Jiang Chengye's courtyard, he saw a beautiful woman in her early twenties walk out. Who else could it be but Huang, Jiang Chengye's most favored concubine?
Aunt Huang was taken aback when she saw Li Zhong, then bowed and said, "Steward Li."
Li Zhong quickly dodged away. Even if this Aunt Huang was a concubine, she was still half a mistress, and he couldn't accept her courtesy. Seeing him dodge, Aunt Huang pursed her lips, said nothing, and left with a worried expression.
Li Zhong glanced at her retreating figure and stepped into the courtyard. Upon seeing him, some of the servants guarding inside immediately went in to announce his arrival, while others led Li Zhong inside. Entering the study, he saw Jiang Chengye sitting behind his desk, engrossed in a book.
"Greetings, Your Excellency." Li Zhong could tell that Jiang Chengye was only pretending to read; he had probably only hastily taken out the book upon hearing Li Zhong's arrival, as it was still covered in dust. However, he said nothing and bowed with utmost respect.
Hearing his voice, Jiang Chengye put down the book in his hand and asked, "What brings you here, Steward Li?"
His voice sounded calm, but Jiang Chengye was inwardly nervous. Li Zhong was the old Duke of Chu's right-hand man, and now he was also assisting Jiang Yu, so he was extremely busy. He wouldn't come to him easily unless there was something important.
Jiang Chengye started thinking about whether he had done anything wrong recently, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't figure out what he had done wrong. It's no wonder he was so nervous; the scene of Jiang Jiarong dying in front of him had really terrified him.
Although Jiang Jiarong's death was orchestrated by his father, the old Duke, he knew that his daughter's methods would be even more ruthless and cunning than his father's.
Li Zhong, unaware of his inner turmoil, respectfully recounted the events at the Prime Minister's residence, then said, "The Prime Minister will surely guess that what Young Master Lu did was at the behest of the Duke, so the Prime Minister is very likely to take action against our Duke's residence. Therefore, it would be best for you, sir, to stay home as much as possible during this period to avoid getting into trouble you shouldn't."
Jiang Chengye looked somewhat displeased. He clasped his hands together and remained silent for a while before saying, "Why doesn't she just stay a peaceful life as the Duke and serve the Emperor? Why does she have to provoke the Prime Minister?"
Li Zhong frowned upon hearing this, but Jiang Chengye was the master and he was the servant, so there were some things he couldn't say. He then respectfully said, "How the Duke conducts himself is not something we can comment on."
Jiang Chengye felt that Jiang Yu was too troublesome and didn't respect him, her biological father, at all. To go against the Prime Minister's residence on such a big deal as this, she not only didn't consult him, but also sent a servant to tell him to stay home.
But he was also aware of his current position in this household, and no matter how uncomfortable he felt, he had to endure it. He waved his hand impatiently, signaling Li Zhong to leave, but Li Zhong stood there without moving. "Master, the Duke is waiting for your reply."
Jiang Chengye: "...I understand. I'll tell her I'll stay home as much as possible for a while."
"yes."
Having received the answer he wanted, Li Zhong turned and left. However, he was still somewhat uneasy about Jiang Chengye and decided to remind Jiang Yu later.
After Li Zhong left, Jiang Chengye angrily threw the book he had been reading on the ground, his face contorted with rage. He had already accepted that his daughter had inherited the title before him and was content to live a life of leisure and wealth. But could Jiang Yu possibly give him any face?
The servant standing to the side wasn't very bright either. At this moment, he asked, "Master, you can't go out. What about what you promised Aunt Huang?"
"Who said I can't go out? Get out!" None of them give him any peace of mind.
The attendant left immediately, but still dutifully stood guard outside. He was later transferred to Jiang Chengye's side by the old Duke of Chu. The reason he was chosen was because he was honest and somewhat dull.
When Jiang Yu got to Lu Yifang, she immediately recounted the events that had transpired with the Prime Minister's residence, and then said, "You've been working hard these past few days, so please keep a close eye on your family."
Lu Yifang immediately nodded, "Don't worry about that. There are few people in our household, and most of them are women. They all have to report to us when they go out."
Jiang Yu nodded in agreement; she still believed in Lu Yifang's current housekeeping abilities.
"Do you think Pei Tinglan will go back to the capital?" Lu Yifang asked Jiang Yu in a low voice, her voice filled with hatred. Her decades of suffering were all related to that old woman. She now wished she could tear Pei Tinglan to pieces.
“Perhaps,” Jiang Yu said. “If you want to take revenge yourself, I will find a way to bring her to the capital, or you can go to Lingnan. In any case, I will make sure you get your revenge.”
Lu Yifang smiled, but said, "The important thing is to make her suffer a terrible death. I don't care whether I personally avenged her or not."
Jiang Yu nodded, but in her heart she was determined to make Lu Yifang vent her anger. Moreover, once the time was right, it wouldn't be difficult to get Pei Tinglan back to the capital.
She spoke with Lu Yifang for a while longer before getting up to leave. When she reached the front yard, she saw Li Zhong waiting for her at the door of her study. The two went in one after the other, and Li Zhong recounted his visit to Jiang Chengye, including his concerns.
After listening, Jiang Yu pondered for a moment and said, "Summon the master's personal attendant over here, I'll ask him. Also, send four secret guards to follow the master, but don't let him know."
Li Zhong acknowledged and left, inwardly sweating for Jiang Chengye. He had sent a secret guard to follow him without Jiang Chengye's knowledge, just to see if he would be plotted against or cause trouble. If Jiang Chengye wasn't plotted against, all would be well; but if he was...
I dare not think about it.
A short while later, Jiang Chengye's attendant was brought before Jiang Yu. Upon seeing him, the attendant immediately knelt on the ground, his body trembling slightly. He couldn't help it; he was timid. When the old Duke of Chu dealt with Jiang Jiarong, he had been sent to guard outside.
Jiang Jiarong's death not only haunted Jiang Chengye, but it also affected him. It must be said that the old Duke of Chu went to great lengths to prevent Jiang Chengye from causing any more trouble.
Jiang Yu glanced at him and said, "Get up."
"Yes." The servant tried to stand up, supporting himself with his hands, but he was too nervous and couldn't get up after several attempts. He raised his head and said almost in tears, "Lord Duke, please let me kneel down to answer your questions."
