Chapter 7: Let’s Talk

007.

The magnolia trees were replaced by tall trees. The light that was bright just now became much dimmer in the dense woods. The surrounding temperature also dropped slightly. Rabbits could be seen running by in the distance.

Liang Li let go of Song Shuyao, took in the surroundings, and said, "I died here. I was on a mission chasing the enemy to this mountain. We captured the enemy, but I didn't expect there were bombs buried here. The bombs exploded, and when I woke up again, I was on a train and transformed into Hao Yuanchao in 1962. For some reason, this mountain followed me. I can enter it whenever I want."

"Shuyao, I regret it. At the moment of the explosion, I was thinking that if I hadn't insisted on separating from you, could we have spent more time together? Especially during those days in Nanxi Village, I kept thinking about this question every day after dealing with the things left behind by Hao Yuanchao. I don't regret not taking off this military uniform, and I don't regret dying for my country. I only regret not being with you longer." Even if that was more selfish, he still wanted to be with her longer.

Song Shuyao laughed when she heard this. "You only understand now? I never cared about you dying for your country, avenging your comrades, or not retiring. But what I care about is that you abandoned me. How could I have lost my dignity and begged you back then? But you stubbornly broke up with me under the pretext of doing it for my own good! I'm not afraid of your death or being implicated in your revenge, I'm just afraid of being abandoned. I hate being abandoned the most. Don't you know that?! Now you say you regret it. What gives you the right to say that?"

She had tried every trick in the book back then, but he remained indifferent. Now that he was saying he regretted it, did he feel unhappy if he didn't stab her in the heart?!

Liang Li was silent. At that time, he had thought about retiring from the army and marrying her. However, before he retired, an error in the information of a mission narrowly escaped death. His best comrade died to protect him, but the enemy escaped. The pain and hatred made him change his mind. He swore an oath under his comrade's tombstone that he would avenge him. He also became afraid and worried that Song Shuyao would be hurt because of him, so he wanted to separate from her despite her soft and hard tactics.

He was hesitant at first, but as the pursuit became more and more difficult, he became determined. After finally catching the enemy, he was actually happy. He thought that if Song Shuyao didn't have anyone else around her and still had feelings for him, he would definitely pursue her again. But who knew that a huge explosion would happen in the end, bringing him back to the year 1962.

Liang Li admitted that he was sorry to Song Shuyao, but since fate gave him another chance, he would grab it this time and never let go. His last thought before death was that he had not been with her longer. Now that he had changed the world and his identity, he didn't want to waste time anymore. He didn't want to delay the present because of the past. Even if she held a grudge and beat or scolded him, it didn't matter. He would not deceive his mind.

"I owed you in my previous life. I swear to God that I will never repeat the same mistake in this life no matter who it is or what the reason is. Here," Liang Li clenched his fist and hit his heart, "You are the most important." Nothing can be changed.

His face was firm, and every word he spoke was serious. His oath was true, and his promise was even more true.

Song Shuyao's heart suddenly soured. What was this? What was this? She wanted to say something heartless and harsh, but her thoughts turned several times, and her mind was filled with the images of the two of them together. In the end, she couldn't say anything.

After coming out of the forest space, he took his graduation certificate and assignment list and left. He went home and locked himself in the room again. In the middle of the night, he went into his villa space and searched around. He found the suicide note from the locked room. The envelope was stuck tightly and there was no sign of it being opened.

Song Shuyao had never opened the suicide note since she received it. Her head was dazed, her heart was confused and chaotic, and she had an unreal feeling of walking on light clouds. She didn't even know how much wine she drank. In the end, she was probably drunk to death and came to this world as Jiang Shuyao. This was actually more like a dream. She was not in the mood to sleep and didn't want to read the suicide note at all.

Now, as she held the letter, her heart was still in a mess, and Liang Li's words seemed to still echo in her ears.

He said he regretted it, he said he was sorry, he said that in this special era he was the only one who understood her the most and was more suitable to be with her than any other man, he said he would not ask for forgiveness and let her beat and scold him but only asked her to give him another chance, he said he would not repeat the same mistake and she would always be the most important thing in his heart.

However, she remembered the harsh words he said about breaking up, remembered that even though she cried, he still left without looking back, remembered how she locked herself up in the small villa for two years after they broke up, pretending to have forgotten, pretending to be in the past, suppressing the negative emotions in her heart and coaxing herself to get by, how many phone calls she made to the psychologist and how much she learned to prevent her emotions from breaking down, and she also remembered how heartbroken, confused and at a loss she felt when she received his suicide note.

The shadows of past and present lives were vague, and Song Shuyao held the letter but was unable to take action. She let go of one thought and held on to another. What was she asking for now?

If there was a bowl of Meng Po soup in front of her, and she was asked to drink it as her present life and let go of the past, would she be willing to drink it?

Song Shuyao closed her eyes and held the envelope tighter.

——

"I think we can't delay this marriage any longer. We should have it clear with Hao Yuanchao." Jiang's father spoke at the dinner table. Seeing that Song Shuyao's work assignment had come down, if the marriage was not made clear, it would be troublesome if it was reported to the workplace. So Jiang's father thought that they couldn't continue to be unclear like this. They had to talk it out with Hao Yuanchao first. That way, Song Shuyao could get married when she met the right person at her workplace. She couldn't just stay like this without getting married.
