Chapter 1254 I Should Have Been Here

Chapter 1254 I Should Have Been Here

The autumn sun blazed brightly, and the sky was a clear, blue expanse.

The autumn wind is bleak, and fallen leaves return to their roots.

After wandering around, only the autumn scenery of this village could soothe Song Chunxue's fluctuating emotions.

In her past life, she spent more than sixty years in this narrow mountain valley, and she even remembers what every tree on every mountain looks like.

Over there, the tree trunks begin to bend from somewhere, and the low banyan bushes over there have been gnawed by sheep and haven't grown much. For sixty years, those old apricot trees haven't grown much at all.

But one day, she suddenly discovered that there was a bald patch in the middle of the tree crown, and a large branch had died and needed to be cut off so that new branches could grow.

The old apricot tree that has been cut down again will not only have new branches and leaves, but even the size and taste of the apricots will change.

As Song Chunxue drove the carriage to the gate of the garden outside the courtyard, she heard the sound of footsteps. Who else could it be but Li Dazui, with such a swaying and noisy gait?

Moreover, in this village, no one's eyes and ears are as sharp or quick as Li Dazui's.

"Oh dear, I knew it. People from our village would come at this time, and in a horse-drawn carriage no less. There's no one else but your family." Li Dazui put his hands behind his back, holding a willow basket filled with freshly dug potatoes.

"You're here quickly. Why are you resting so early? Have you finished digging the potatoes?" Song Chunxue opened the courtyard gate. "Come on in, please come in."

Li Dazui followed behind, saying, "Hey, why is there only one horse? I saw two before."

“The other one’s wandering up the mountain.” Song Chunxue, seeing his posture, said, “You didn’t come down here to verify it, did you?”

"Hehe, you know me best." Li Dazui lowered his voice, "You definitely didn't come back alone, otherwise you wouldn't have taken a carriage all the way back. You could have just used your sword."

Song Chunxue untied the carriage harness. "Your cleverness could be used for so many good things. Tell me, in our village, what secret can be kept from you? It's a shame you're not a spy."

"That's right, I shouldn't have come back to farm when I was young. Maybe I could have found a good job in the government and become a detective." Li Dazui didn't hold back when he boasted, laughing as if he didn't care about anything.

Since he remarried, his clothes no longer had that shiny look, and his shoes no longer had a patina. Although his clothes were old, they were neither dirty nor tattered.

He helped Song Chunxue carry her things to the gatehouse outside the courtyard, and looked at the bright and tall new house with a smile, "Everyone in our village says that it's a pity that you built such a beautiful house but left it empty. Are you bringing your apprentices to stay here permanently this time?"

“It’s been quiet lately. I was thinking the other day that if you lived on our estate, even if bandits came, we wouldn’t be hurt.” Li Dazui said with lingering fear, “My wife came back and said that you were out for most of the day, and when you came back you smelled of blood. Did you take care of those people?”

Song Chunxue opened the gate of the old courtyard without saying a word.

"I knew it! Otherwise, how could those guys from our county government have gone out to suppress bandits in the middle of the night?" Li Dazui said. "Thanks to you, you saved so many people, so much grain and livestock. We are all grateful to you, and we will build a temple and erect a monument in your honor in the future..."

"Stop, stop, can't you wish me something good?"

Li Dazui chuckled, turned around and said, "I'm going home for dinner. You can clean up. I'll come back this afternoon."

"Wait a minute," Song Chunxue quickly packed out two baskets of food, "You and my eldest son each get one, don't be shy, tell him he doesn't need to come these two days, and can come to see me the day after tomorrow."

“I understand, I understand. You have guests coming over, don’t let them disturb you.” Li Dazui picked up one of them and said, “It’s on your way, don’t go to all that trouble.”

“You don’t want children but you still want to eat? I’ve prepared plenty. Take this and let your wife eat it. I know you’re not greedy.” Song Chunxue shoved the basket into his hands. “I met an old man selling baskets in the county. These are so big, they’re convenient for carrying anything, like cutting some chives or something. I really liked them, so I bought all five. I’ll give you one.”

"This won't do, I..."

"Here you go, you talk too much." Song Chunxue said irritably, "If you're feeling down, why don't you stay and help me clean up the kitchen?"

“Alright, alright,” Li Dazui placed the two baskets on the table in the main room. “A house that hasn’t been lived in for a long time should be set off with some firecrackers to scare people away, just in case some wandering ghosts from some past life want to stay here…”

Before he could finish speaking, he saw Song Chunxue conjure up another string of firecrackers out of thin air and place them on the steps.

Li Dazui stood far away, "You're still blaming God."

“I’ve thought it all out, but I just find it too much trouble,” Song Chunxue said, blowing on the tinderbox. “It would be good to scare them a little.”

"Crackling and popping~"

A deafening noise startled Li Dazui, who covered his ears. "Now everyone knows you're going to be staying here for a while."

"So what if you know? Everyone's too busy to visit each other anyway." Song Chunxue picked up a broom and wrapped her hair in a piece of floral cloth. "Go outside and find a shovel, then clear the weeds in the yard."

"Okay."

In less than half an hour, the yard and kitchen were clean.

"Now it's all good. I'll cook, and I'll clean up the rest myself. Thank you for your hard work. Bring your kids here to play sometime; I'm here often."

Li Dazui washed his hands, picked up the basket, and said, "Thank you very much. I mainly wanted to know who you brought with you."

"Thank you, sir, but he's leaving tomorrow, and he hasn't thought of it yet."

Li Dazui looked regretful. "Ah... he's not staying here with you?"

“My master has arrived. You can meet him. He is no ordinary person.”

Li Dazui instantly broke into a nervous yet excited smile, as if his feet were burning, "Then I'll definitely come!"

Afterwards, Song Chunxue went outside to gather some grain stalks, lit a fire to make soup, boiled a large pot of water, and heated up the food she had bought earlier in the pot.

Sure enough, Qi Yun returned soon.

"Master, are you cooking? I'm here to help." He had just walked into the kitchen when he bumped into the door frame with a "bang," instantly bursting into tears from the pain.

"Oh my god, this door..."

Song Chunxue couldn't help but laugh out loud, "It's alright. This door was replaced later. It was lower before. Our house isn't very big, so you had to bend over to enter. Remember that next time."

"Ouch... My God, that really hurts..." Qi Yun clutched his forehead, his face flushed and tears streaming down his face. "I really want to chop this door down."

"It's much better now, the doors and windows are bigger, but the kitchen is really small. If we change the door to be too big, we're afraid it will hollow out the wall. I can come in without any problem, but you're tall, so you'll definitely have to stoop, haha."

Lord Xie carried firewood into the courtyard. "I think I've been here before," he said, "my first instinct was to look for tools."

"Yes, I've been here before." Song Chunxue handed him the large wooden platter containing the dishes. "Take it to the big house outside the courtyard; it's bright there."
