Chapter 61 You Old Man
On a clear morning after the rain, everything is wet with dew, and the fresh air is invigorating.
Above us was a clear, deep blue sky, without a single cloud, and the leaves of the washed trees shone with a vibrant green.
Song Chunxue wanted to wait until the dew dried before going to the mountains to pick broad beans, otherwise the cold dew would stick to her hands, causing joint pain in winter, and making her feel that her bones were damp and heavy on cloudy days.
The humidity is too high today, so no one in the village is in a hurry to go to the fields.
Li Dazui then leisurely walked up the path and soon arrived at the Jiang family's house.
He was really curious: if the third child really went to school, was the fourth child of the Jiang family willing to herd sheep?
He seemed to notice that the fourth brother didn't go to herd sheep yesterday, but instead cut grass on the mountain. He wondered if Song Chunxue had hit anyone.
With his hands behind his back, he saw that the Jiang family's sheepfold was still full, and knew that the fourth brother hadn't let the sheep out today.
If it were the third child, his sheep would have already crossed the mountain by now. Even if it was dewy, he would drive the sheep to the high mountain early so that the dew would evaporate sooner.
While watering the rose bushes by the door, Song Chunxue heard footsteps, turned around, and saw Li Dazui.
Here we gossip again. Honestly, isn't he afraid of being bored to death?
"Are you free today? Have you finished picking the green beans?"
“There’s just a little bit left, not much, no rush. I didn’t plant any peas today, and the wheat isn’t ripe yet.” Li Dazui smiled as she walked to her little garden, looking up at the tall rose bush. “These flowers are growing quite well, but I’ve heard that it’s not good to grow thorny plants at the entrance, it can cause arguments.”
A verbal dispute?
Song Chunxue laughed. The real issue wasn't the rose, but the person.
She never argued with anyone before. What are the benefits of that?
"Where's your eldest son? Is he still lying on the kang (heated brick bed)?" Li Dazui said, sitting down on the stone bricks by the door. "It's been so long since I've seen him making mud bricks. Is he not building a house anymore?"
Song Chunxue didn't say anything, thinking to herself, how could this Li Dazui not know that the boss was beaten so badly by her that he couldn't get off the bed?
I'm afraid that seven or eight households in the area below already know about this.
He's still pretending here.
"Maybe. If you miss him, go visit him at the thatched cottage and have a good chat with him. Anyway, you guys are all pretty free now, while I still have to go to the fields to pull beans."
Song Chunxue didn't want to listen to his idle chatter at all. She put down the bucket, went into the yard, put on her hat, and prepared to go to the fields.
Seeing that she was about to leave, Li Dazui quickly asked, "I saw that Sanwa really is going to school. Is he settling in well lately? And who's herding your sheep?"
"I've handed him over to the fourth brother, but he's still sleeping. If he doesn't get up soon, please call him for me." As she spoke, she winked at Jiang Hongying in the north room, signaling her not to go to the fields with her.
Jiang Hongying disliked Li Dazui, so she stayed in the house with Xiujuan to avoid running into him and having her in-laws' affairs questioned.
This is so annoying.
After Song Chunxue left, Li Dazui didn't feel disliked at all. He got up, went to the entrance of the thatched kiln, and lifted the curtain.
Jiang Yeming was lying on the kang (a heated brick bed), with his back to the door, pretending to be asleep with his eyes closed.
"Boss, are you still sleeping? It's already Chen Shi (7-9 AM), aren't you afraid of getting dizzy from sleeping too much?"
Li Dazui never knew what it meant to be embarrassed in front of younger people.
He sat on a bench inside the thatched kiln and saw the eldest son reluctantly get up from the kang (a heated brick bed).
"Uncle Li is here. Didn't you go to harvest the grain?"
Li Dazui scoffed, "I didn't plant much. There's dew on the ground today, and I didn't want to get my hands wet, so I just wandered around."
"I heard you haven't done any work these days because your mother beat you. Are you still not better?" he said. "I also heard you were beaten a second time. What did you do to offend your mother? She really hits you hard..."
"Ouch, what happened to your head? It looks like it's bleeding. Is your mother really going to beat you to death?"
Jiang Yeming's face was as sour as a rock. "I bumped into it by accident."
"Where's your wife? I haven't seen her." Li Dazui looked around. "This thatched kiln is quite clean. It's perfect for kids to play house."
"..." Jiang Yeming gritted his teeth, really wanting to get this clueless thing out of here.
At this moment, the curtain was lifted, and Chen Feng entered from outside, rubbing her lower back.
Upon seeing Li Dazui, she instantly recalled how people described him: he loved to join in the fun, couldn't keep secrets, and would spread even the most trivial matters to others.
She didn't welcome him, so she didn't ask him anything. Instead, she went straight to the stove and placed the freshly cut chives on it.
She had been craving stir-fried eggs with chives for a long time, but had never had the chance to cut chives.
After all, the family had separated, and all the chives were planted by Song Chunxue, so she was unwilling to ask for them.
While Song Chunxue was in the field and Jiang Hongying was in the house, she quietly went and cut some.
“Your mother’s chives are growing well. You even picked some scallion leaves. You must have waited until she left before you went,” Li Dazui bluntly exposed her. “I heard you’ve been back to your parents’ home three times recently. You’re so pregnant and you’ve traveled such a long way by yourself. Be careful, especially at noon.”
Chen Feng angrily threw down the kitchen knife in her hand, "What business is it of my time to go back to my parents' home? First Li Guangzheng left, and now you, you big mouth, have come. Do you want to be scolded?"
Jiang Yeming looked up in surprise. How could she even dare to curse Li Dazui?
In a few days, everyone in the village would know that she didn't respect the elderly.
“Chen Feng, how can you talk like that? Uncle Li is just concerned about you.” Jiang Yeming got off the ground with his cane. “She’s been throwing tantrums lately, don’t take it to heart.”
Li Dazui, who was scolded, instantly got angry. Although he liked to chat with people everywhere, he had never seen a junior talk to him like that before.
That's incredibly ill-mannered.
But he couldn't very well argue with a young, heavily pregnant new bride.
"It's alright. Everyone knows your wife's temper, and Old Man Chen is known for being fierce and reckless, so his daughter is naturally not gentle and virtuous."
"You..." Chen Feng rolled her eyes in anger, "You just have nothing better to do than gossip, huh..."
She was about to say something when Jiang Yeming covered her mouth.
"Uncle Li, I'm sorry, she's wild and unruly, please don't take it to heart." He put down his cane, grabbed Chen Feng and walked outside, "We'll go outside for an IV drip and brew you a pot of tea."
Even if Li Dazui was incredibly oblivious, he didn't want to stay any longer.
He slowly got up, shaking his head and saying, "No need, I don't drink tea according to other people's opinions. Boss, you're not very smart either. If you hadn't listened to your wife in everything, things wouldn't have turned out like this."
"Everyone says that once you get married, you forget your mother. That only applies to naughty boys. You've been your mother's darling for so many years. Now that you're married, you want to cut all ties with your mother and sever all relations with her. I don't think it's your wife who's encouraging you. The problem is that you're brainless. All those years of studying have been for nothing."
Li Dazui stepped out of the door and said in a deep voice, "No wonder your mother was forced to change her mind by you. She stopped being confused all of a sudden and not only treated Sanwa well but also sent him to school."
“I have rarely admired anyone in my life, but your mother is one of them. You two should take care of yourselves. Since ancient times, loyalty and filial piety have been difficult to reconcile, but since you are neither loyal nor filial, you won’t fare well in the future.”
"You old geezer, who are you talking about? Do you believe I'll tear your mouth apart?" Chen Feng was so angry that she bared her teeth and claws, reaching out to scratch him.
