Chapter 784 What Day is My Birthday?
With a smile, Chunxiang instructed Chunmei, "Bring the cloth bag. The basket is too big; people will scold us if they see it."
None of the apricot trees on the mountain belonged to the Song family; the sisters would secretly pick them when no one was looking.
At midday in summer, when adults are most tired and exhausted, they are taking a nap, unseen by anyone.
Song Chunxue stopped insisting on visiting her parents. Even if she did, they would just hug her and pull her away because she couldn't help but cry.
Moreover, she had just seen her father. He was thin and bony. His afternoon nap had been disturbed, and he had only opened his eyes to look at her before turning over and going back to sleep.
Luckily, her father was in a good mood today, otherwise she would definitely have been scolded.
She was content just to see them.
"Oh dear, I can't carry you anymore, Xuexue, get down and walk by yourself." Chunxiang put her on the ground, pulled her clothes up, and patted her bottom with a smile, "You're so round, hahaha."
Song Chunxue blushed unexpectedly.
"Oh my, you're such a little kid and you already know how to be shy? Who taught you that?" Chunmei put her hand on her head, looked down at her face and laughed loudly.
Song Chunxue pursed her lips and after a long while squeezed out a sentence, "No, you're not wearing pants either, and yours are rounder."
“Sigh, the ones my older sister wore are too tattered to wear, and my legs are too thick, so I won’t wear them. Anyway, it’s not cold now.” With that, Chunmei quickly ran a few steps up the hillside. “I ate little at noon and I’m hungry. I need to eat my fill before I go back.”
"Mother said to eat less apricots, or your stomach will hurt." Chunxiang took Song Chunxue's hand and pulled her up the mountain.
The soil in the afternoon sun was warm, and it felt very comfortable to walk on barefoot.
The road was covered not only in fine mud but also in sheep and donkey dung, which made it a bit uncomfortable to walk on.
She thought to herself, "This dream feels so real."
"Why are you crying?" Chunxiang lowered her head and wiped Song Chunxue's eyes. "Don't cry, we'll be able to eat apricots soon. The sweet apricot pits are delicious. I'll give you two."
It's hard not to cry. The sky is so blue, the loess soil is so hot, the road is so difficult to walk, and my sister's face is so thin. You can tell she hasn't eaten enough.
"Are you too hungry? There are some banyan leaves over there. How about I let you chew on a couple?"
Upon hearing Chunxiang's words, Song Chunxue quickly shook her head, "I'll chew it myself."
She's so old, and her older sister still has to chew the food for her; it's disgusting.
"Oh dear, Xuexue has grown up. It's good that she can chew by herself." As she spoke, Chunxiang picked a few banyan leaves and handed them to her. "Here, chew by yourself."
Song Chunxue put it in her mouth and chewed it. It was sticky at the end, neither bad nor good, but definitely better than apricot leaves.
The apricot leaves are bitter, just like her fate in her past life.
She sat under the apricot tree, watching her second and third sisters throw her a few apricots. The flesh was not thick, the color had just changed, and she couldn't break them open.
All the trees that could be reached by hand under the ground had been picked; you had to climb to a higher place to pick them.
The second and third sisters tied one sleeve together to hold the apricots, picked some as quickly as possible, and hurriedly ran into the ditch to head down the mountain, afraid of being scolded by the people down below.
Song Chunxue tripped and fell several times, getting a mouthful of mud that tasted like sheep dung, but she didn't cry. She got up, dusted herself off, and kept running.
As we ran, I felt that being as tall as a stool was quite nice, and I started laughing along with my second and third sisters.
When I got home, my parents were already up, sitting in the shade under the west wall, looking up at the blue sky.
"Father, Mother!"
Song Chunxue let go of the apricot in her hand and ran over.
Her mother opened her arms and hugged her, tapping her forehead. "Where have you been playing? You're as dirty as a piglet."
But her mother smiled and did not blame her.
Tears welled up in her eyes again.
"Why is my baby crying?" The mother pressed her forehead against her own to make her laugh, and as she spoke, you could hear something coming out of her trachea.
"Come here, let me see." Her father stretched out his arms, and Song Chunxue took them.
Song Chunxue stretched out her arms and hugged her father's neck, crying silently.
"What happened to this child? Who bullied you?"
He picked up Song Chunxue's body, trying to see her face, but Song Chunxue clung to his neck, refusing to let go. "Dad, hold me for a while."
"Okay, okay, I'll hug you for a bit." He gently patted Song Chunxue's back. "You're usually so resilient, why are you crying so much today?"
Second sister Chunxiang quickly defended herself, saying, "We didn't bully her. She was smiling happily when we went up the mountain, and she didn't cry when she fell down the mountain. She only cried when she saw you. She wanted you to feel sorry for her."
Song Chunxue nodded through her tears. Yes, her second sister was right.
"Come here, let me comfort you," the mother said, taking her in and gently stroking her head. "Don't cry, don't cry. I've been so busy these past few days that I haven't had time to take care of you. Are you sad?"
"It's probably going to rain tomorrow, so I'll cook you all something nice to eat, okay?"
Song Chunxue hugged her mother's arm and nodded vigorously.
Oh right, she hasn't asked what her birthday is yet.
"Mother, what...what's my birthday?" Song Chunxue sobbed. "Does Mother remember my birthday?"
The mother thought carefully for a moment, "You've thought about your birthday, haven't you? You were born in February, the same month as the fourth child. Let me think..."
"Song Chunxue, Song Chunxue, wake up!"
"Junior brother, junior brother, wake up!"
Suddenly, she felt someone pat her cheek and push her shoulder, shouting her name loudly in her ear.
"Mother, Mother! Mother!" Song Chunxue cried out anxiously. She could no longer see her mother, father, or sister.
"Mother, sob sob sob..."
Song Chunxue suddenly sat up, opened her eyes and found several people standing by the bed, all staring at her.
Wu Bing held her wrist tightly as she looked around; they were in a room at the inn.
Her eyes were a little blurry, so she raised her hand and wiped them hard. Sniffing, she let go of Wu Bing's hand and took out a handkerchief to wipe her nose.
She could sense that the others had quietly left the room, and Huoxiang sat down on the stool beside her bed.
After a long while, she composed herself and returned to normal.
How did we get back?
Huo Xiang's voice was calmer and gentler than ever before.
"After choosing the weapons, we came out and opened our eyes to find ourselves standing at the foot of the mountain. But while we were all standing, you were lying down." He smiled. "You were fast asleep and couldn't be woken up no matter how much we called you. Another day has passed."
Song Chunxue leaned against the headboard. "How long have I been asleep?"
"Thirteen hours."
"Why did I keep you here to talk to me?"
Huo Xiang crossed her legs, saying, "Because I'm witty and humorous."
"..." She looked at the pattern on the bedsheet. "Your wife didn't come?"
"Sigh, I ran into her as soon as I went out yesterday. She and Liu Niang were fighting fiercely, and they both disappeared in the afternoon and haven't come back yet." Huo Xiang patted her chest. "I'm so worried. Talking to you will make me feel better."
Song Chunxue was silent for a moment, then said, "I slept for too long and my mind is foggy. You can tell the others."
"No, you don't know yet, do you? Quickly check your storage ring. Are all the things you put in yesterday still there?"
Huo Xiang slapped her thigh and said indignantly, "When we came out yesterday, everyone had something bestowed by the Ancestral Master in front of them, but you got the most! I got the least!"
