Chapter 981 Just a Mother
After buying her things, on her way to Lao Si's tavern, Song Chunxue felt someone following her.
She didn't see any clues, but she felt her skin tighten all over, as if her soul was on alert.
Don't you feel anything?
You're still angry about what happened before, but isn't it right for me to control you?
Song Chunxue felt that Wuyou was very difficult to serve, just like her master.
"Hmph, isn't it understandable that I'm upset?" he said irritably. "There are people following me, but you've locked me in this storage ring and won't let me out. How am I supposed to protect you?"
So you'd rather I be ambushed than warn me?
Wuyou, not to be outdone, retorted, "Don't worry, I know my limits. If they were after you, I'd be screaming my head off. Besides, aren't you pretty quick-witted? You can handle these little things yourself. If I had to intervene for every little thing, what kind of divine swordsman would I be? I'd be nothing but a beast of burden."
Indeed, how could a proud sword like Wuyou be willing to be someone else's beast of burden?
My senior brother also said that the reason he chose her was because he thought she was easy to bully.
In other words, it's easy to drive.
As a result, she learned swordsmanship.
Song Chunxue took a different path and entered a narrow alleyway. The surrounding smell was unpleasant.
But the sunlight was generous to this place, shining warmly on the not-so-clean walls.
The faint sounds of voices and children's laughter drifted from the nearby courtyard, making this place seem exceptionally quiet.
The feeling of being watched faded a little, and Song Chunxue continued walking forward until she reached a clean and wide street.
The person did not appear.
Song Chunxue was curious about who was following her.
A kindred spirit of Senior Lan Jin?
Didn't her seniors erase the traces for her? And she deliberately did the opposite, crossing the path alone.
Oh well, as long as there's no malice, who cares? Maybe she's just being overly cautious...
The moment this thought crossed her mind, she saw a person appear out of nowhere, blocking her way.
"Don't test me. I'm not following you or trying to harm you."
The man in front of me was wearing a tattered straw hat in broad daylight. The large brim of the hat obscured his face, but I could vaguely make out that he was a disheveled old man who didn't care about his appearance.
But Song Chunxue noticed something was wrong. Although his clothes were worn, they were clean from head to toe. His clothes were white, but there wasn't a speck of dust on them, and even his beard was clean and each hair was clearly visible.
A gentle breeze blew, and the sunlight shining on it shimmered like golden threads.
This light seems to reflect into people's hearts.
Song Chunxue immediately realized that this person was no ordinary person; he gave off the same feeling as her master.
It possesses the ability to dispel all anxieties, causing people to let down their guard and giving them the illusion of being protected by a deity.
"Greetings, senior. May I ask what brings you here?" Song Chunxue asked in a soft voice, a smile on her face.
"Don't go down those narrow paths again. Go to crowded places; it's lively and safer. It's never good for anything to be alone."
As he spoke, he stretched out his slender yet remarkably healthy arm, the back of his hand clean and without a single blemish.
He gestured for Song Chunxue to extend her hand and placed a strange object in her hand.
"Give this to Han Qingfeng for me," the man under the straw hat said in a deep voice, not old but mysterious. "Remember, you must hand it to him personally."
Song Chunxue glanced at what she was holding in her other hand. "Are you in a hurry?"
The old man looked at the rattle drum in her hand, a hint of a smile in his voice.
"No rush, you can give it to him when you get up the mountain." As he spoke, the old man took out two smooth stones from his sleeve. "It's not good to bother people for nothing. I picked these two stones up by the river. Give them to the child to play with."
The pebbles picked up from the riverbank are probably not that simple.
Song Chunxue accepted the gifts with both hands, and said with a smile, "My family has many children, did you pick up anything else?"
The old man smiled and took out a bag, handing it to Song Chunxue. "There are a dozen or so inside, that should be enough."
Song Chunxue was a little embarrassed. "I was a little greedy. I only need four or five."
“But you have more than a dozen grandchildren in your life, you can’t favor one over the other and take them all. They’re just worthless stones, I can pick them up later.” The old man chuckled, gripping his peach wood cane as he turned to leave.
I can't accept this. No matter how simple or ordinary the stone is, it was someone who put in the effort to find it, and I can't just take it for free.
"Senior, wait a moment." Song Chunxue took out a large jar of honey from her storage ring and handed it over. "Spring is dry, use honey to soothe your throat."
"Thank you." The old man accepted it and disappeared from the spot the next moment.
Song Chunxue paused for a moment, then smiled and started collecting the pebbles.
Since the old lady said that each of her grandsons would receive one, she would keep it safe.
There are also unborn children, whose future parents might give them to their children under some pretext, yet they won't be thrown away like ordinary pebbles.
She believed that the stone would at least bring her peace and safety.
By the way, if you could drill a hole in each stone and thread it through, it should be able to be preserved properly.
Thinking this, she decided to go back and ask the stonemason for advice; she wanted to do it herself.
Upon arriving at the tavern, the fourth brother was upstairs soothing the baby. When he saw Song Chunxue, he couldn't help but laugh and tease her, "Mother's here to see me? I thought you only had eyes for the third child."
Song Chunxue looked up and said, "I'm not being biased right now. I just ran into Sanwa on the mountain first."
The fourth brother smiled and waved, "I'll come down first. We'll go to the second brother's house together later. I'll take the baby to visit him. The second sister-in-law is in good health and is currently taking care of her pregnancy. Otherwise, it would be too much trouble for Mother to go back and forth like this."
As Song Chunxue walked into the tavern, she thought to herself, "This brat is quite good at making arrangements for people now."
However, she really didn't plan to stay down the mountain for long. She had seen them a few days ago, and seeing them made her feel at ease.
Afterwards, the fourth brother handed over the tavern business to others and took his wife and children in a carriage to his second brother's house.
The two families gathered together, chatting and laughing. The second son's wife, Hu Wanying, instructed the cook to prepare a table full of delicious dishes. After the second son returned, she also invited the third son's family over, and everyone ate together.
Song Chunxue has grown accustomed to these fleeting moments of being surrounded by her children and grandchildren, and she cherishes them dearly.
After seeing her grandson, she went to see her son, but she couldn't be a good grandmother. She had only come to see her son in the first place.
Sitting with the children and chatting about everything under the sun, I mentioned what I had seen and heard on my trip. The children seemed to be listening to gibberish.
However, she didn't mention anything too bizarre.
But then she suddenly realized that their exaggerated reaction was exactly like how she herself had reacted when she was lying on the kang (a heated brick bed) talking to her son and grandson in her past life and heard strange and unusual things.
It turns out that getting old physically is nothing compared to getting old in one's heart.
Some people are prematurely aged even as soon as they reach adulthood, while others remain full of hope even in their seventies.
