Chapter 9 Is this how a mother should act?

Chapter 9 Is this how a mother should act?

The eldest son didn't care at all why his mother was crying so sadly.

He only cares about what his younger brother has, and wonders why he, as the older brother, doesn't have it.

In the past, whenever my mother bought something or made something delicious, he was always the first person she thought of.

But now, he feels that his authority as the boss is rapidly disappearing.

He became increasingly insignificant in front of his younger brothers.

He slammed the wooden tray of food onto the main table, coldly watching Song Chunxue wipe away her tears, waiting for her to give him an explanation.

Song Chunxue sniffed, wiped away her tears and snot, and tossed the handkerchief aside.

Her eyes were slightly red as she glanced at the eldest brother.

"Didn't I make you two new pairs of shoes?"

“I haven’t made new shoes for my third son in two years. My second son will be leaving soon. Life in the military is tough, and he’ll definitely wear out his shoes with all the training. I bought him two pairs. What are you not happy about?”

The eldest brother crossed his arms and plopped down on the bench.

“Then I’d rather buy them. The shoes you make aren’t nice-looking and they’re not durable. You have to buy me a pair.”

Seeing his unreasonable behavior, a chill ran through her body.

Those were new shoes she painstakingly made, stitch by stitch, working during the day and enduring sleeplessness at night, spending countless nights with dry, tired eyes and having to sleep less each day.

Sanwa was incredibly envious, but he never complained to her.

But the eldest brother was picky.

The anger in my chest grew stronger and stronger, and my chest rose and fell uncontrollably.

She took a deep breath. "Fine, since you don't like them, give the new shoes to Sanwa, and you can buy them yourself."

The eldest brother raised his voice, "You even bought them two pairs?"

Seeing that his mother and eldest brother were about to argue, the third child quickly stepped forward.

"Brother, I can trade with you. The shoes Mother made are soft, and I can wear them comfortably while herding sheep." He didn't want to argue about such a small matter.

"What kind of good person are you? You're just a hypocrite!"

The eldest brother shoved the third brother aside, pointed at him, and yelled, "If you hadn't said something to Mother, would she suddenly be so cold towards me? What bad things did you say behind my back?"

Sanwa was stunned.

He clenched his fist; although he didn't like to cause trouble, he did have a temper.

These past few days, he had been feeling guilty every time he saw his older brother because his mother had suddenly become nicer to him. He wanted to explain but didn't know where to begin.

The eldest brother misunderstood him time and time again, and even looked at him with such a vicious gaze, which made the third brother instantly furious.

The grievances he usually harbored were easily triggered, and the anger in his eyes became uncontrollable.

"Don't you know your own character? Your mother was blind before, always favoring you and always thinking of you first. You're the eldest brother, so I've tolerated it."

"How dare you say such a thing? Do I need to talk badly about you behind your back? I don't have as much free time as you. Ever since you went out for a year and made some money, you've been getting all cocky."

The third brother got so angry that he unleashed a torrent of abuse, pointing at the eldest brother and cursing him more and more vigorously.

"Especially now that you're married, you suddenly don't know your own surname anymore, and you've forgotten whose womb you came from. You're the epitome of 'forgetting your mother after getting married.' I think you should just stay in the Chen family next time and not come back, so you won't be under our noses and make us so angry that we can't eat or sleep."

"Your mother has suffered half her life, and now that you're married, you still want your mother to support you? You have so many excuses not to do the farm work, do you have any shame?"

Song Chunxue and the second brother stared at the third child in disbelief. When did he become so eloquent?

In the past, when he got angry, his eyes would be fierce, but when he cursed, he would always speak incoherently.

Did the new shoes embolden you today?

Seeing that everyone had stopped and was looking at him, Sanwa turned his face away, his aura weakened by half.

"What did you say?" the old man roared in anger. "What did you just say? Say it again if you dare! Doesn't everyone know their own name?"

Seeing that he was about to make a move, the second brother quickly stopped him.

"Brother, don't do it. You really should reflect on your actions..."

"Get out of my way! You think you're so smart? You see your mother siding with Sanwa and you start speaking up for him? Where were you before..."

"What are you doing!" Song Chunxue slammed her hand on the table. "Aren't you hungry? Aren't you going to eat or not?"

The eldest brother lowered his arm, his face full of resentment.

"You and your wife certainly know how to eat the coarse grain dumplings they made for us. You ate pure white dumplings and even ate seven or eight eggs. Boss, do you think I need someone to point out something so obvious to me?"

This noodle is made from a mixture of dark and lentil flour, so it can't compare to white flour.

She looked at her eldest son with disappointment. "Eldest son, I've spoiled you rotten. Sanwa is so busy with chores when he comes back from herding the animals that he doesn't even have time to come into the yard. What bad things could he possibly say to me?"

"Sanwa is right. I was really blind. I've favored you for twenty years and you didn't even know. I was only nice to Sanwa for a few days and you're already upset. If I don't save all the good things for you from now on, are you going to disown me as your mother?"

In fact, he did do that.

“If you’re in a hurry to separate the family, then go build a house as soon as possible, but I won’t pay for it. I have no objection if you all have to separate in the future, so why should Sanwa support me?”

As she spoke, she looked at Sanwa.

“You can also build your own yard. Your older brother is going to herd sheep, so you two can take turns herding sheep and building the house. I don’t want to be a burden that’s passed around. When I get old and can’t move, I’ll pay you to take care of me.”

This was a decision made by Song Chunxue after careful consideration.

Having been given a second chance at life, she didn't want to place all her hopes on Sanwa.

This is unfair to the third child, and she is also afraid that the third child will not be reliable.

People change, and she feared that Sanwa had no choice but to take care of her back then.

Because he needs her.

What if he grows up and no longer needs her?

Sanwa looked at Song Chunxue in disbelief.

“Mother, I’m not unwilling.” He muttered softly, “We may argue and bicker, but there are four of us brothers. How could we not take care of you? If we pay to serve you, people will laugh at us.”

Song Chunxue smiled sadly; how could she be laughing?

During those years she was bedridden, how much she wished she had money so she could confidently order Sanwa's family to serve her.

She also hoped she could control her temper and not torment them by yelling at them...

"Alright, let's eat." She looked at the eldest brother, "Regarding the shoes, you two can only exchange one pair."

The eldest brother felt humiliated and turned to leave.

"No need, I have my own money to buy it!"

Before long, he came out with two pairs of shoes and threw them onto the kang (heated brick bed) in the north room.

“If Sanwa likes to wear them, then give them to him. I don’t care about the shoes you made. From now on, don’t side with me. Be fair, and I won’t always be called an ungrateful wretch.”

Song Chunxue's heart grew colder and colder.

She scoffed, "So you know you're an ingrate."

The eldest brother, who had just stormed out, stopped in the yard in anger upon hearing these words.

"If you don't like me and Feng'er, just say so. What have I done to wrong you? Are you calling me an ingrate?"

"You clearly promised to build me a yard, and you said five years ago that you would give me that piece of land in Shuichuan. It was you who broke your promise and lied to me, and then you called me an ungrateful wretch. What kind of mother are you?"
