Chapter 440 The Old House
To be honest, the Jiang family used to dislike Li Dazui quite a bit.
I think he's too nosy and a big mouth who can't keep anything from anyone.
It's because they're afraid of being talked about and take other people's opinions too seriously.
Now I think he has a kind heart.
But the second son didn't realize that Li Dazui had helped the Jiang family before.
"My leg is fine, I just fell and hurt myself. I'm not in a rush to find a wife. I plan to get married in a few years when I'm settled down." With that, the second son stepped into the house.
Li Dazui wasn't angry. "So, your second son found a good job?"
Song Chunxue replied, "I guess so. We'll go after his leg has healed. Let's go inside and sit down."
Li Dazui sat down at the table. "With so many people, the room is too crowded. I'll just listen to you guys talk. My house is so quiet it's unsettling, I just like to join in your fun."
He clasped his hands together and hugged his left knee, his gaze falling on the third child, a smile unconsciously appearing on his face.
"I never expected that the shepherd boy from back then would be a scholar now, and he's the most outstanding one there. If we hadn't let him study, we would have really missed out."
Song Chunxue sat down at the table and watched as Sanwa and the eldest brother carried the things from the carriage to the kitchen.
Sanwa wore a moon-white long robe, his hair was tied up high, revealing his smooth and full forehead. He could be seen at a glance in the crowd; he was the fairest and most handsome.
“Yes, it’s good that he got to study,” Song Chunxue changed the subject. “Tell me, what interesting things have happened on our estate lately?”
Li Dazui adjusted his posture. "Then you've come to the right person."
Chen Feng stood at the kitchen doorway, with Jiang Huan holding her clothes and standing behind her, timidly looking at the three children in the yard, wanting to play with them but too afraid to go.
"Huan'er, go play with your older brother and sister, don't be afraid."
She didn't want her children to appear timid and cowardly. Seeing them dressed so smartly while she, heavily pregnant, wore the cheapest fabric and looked unkempt, made her feel uneasy.
Even the girl's aunt looked much fairer than when we last met. The fabric she was wearing looked very expensive, and the silver bracelet on her wrist was wide and heavy, giving her a substantial appearance.
They must have all come from her mother.
He Chuan, a son-in-law who married into the family, is not bad either. He looked disheveled when they last met, but when he spoke to Song Chunxue, he was very generous and didn't seem to be currying favor with her at all.
While the three children were carrying things, he had no sense of propriety at all and sat down while holding the child.
That old woman is really confused. Her eldest son is her own son, yet she treats her son-in-law better than her eldest son.
With so many people coming, all they brought were some snacks and meat; they didn't even think to bring any cloth.
I heard that Song Chunxue opened a clothing store with someone, and she's so stingy that she didn't even bring Jiang Yeming a single set of clothes.
Jiang Huan was her first grandson, but she didn't even glance at him. After entering the room, she was busy chatting with Li Dazui.
What a widow's despicable behavior!
Standing at the kitchen door, she grew angrier the more she thought about it. This family had clearly come to show off their power and gloat in Li Family Village, not to visit Jiang Yeming.
They might be trying to ask them for food.
The eldest son used to be the most favored, but now he's not even as good as anyone else.
This old man only cares about spending his money on himself. He's so old, why is he dressing up so extravagantly for no one?
An old woman who is not virtuous.
What are you standing here for?
Jiang Yeming's voice came from behind her.
"Everyone in the family is in the yard, didn't you even bother to greet them? Couldn't you have brought out two plates of steamed buns?"
He gave Chen Feng a cold look and lowered his voice, saying, "Don't think I don't know what you're thinking. You should know that if they build a house instead of replacing you after getting the money, you should be burning incense in gratitude."
Chen Feng pursed her lips. "I'm just a bit confused and don't know what to do. Just do what you tell me to do. All you do is curse."
As she spoke, she turned and went into the house, picked up a kitchen knife and cut the buckwheat bun in half.
The eldest brother took a deep breath, turned around and found a porcelain basin in the cabinet, then took out a few fried dough cakes and twisted dough sticks from the earthenware jar.
"I'll kill two chickens later. Tell me in advance so you won't nag me."
Chen Feng said slowly, "I know, just kill them. I'm heavily pregnant and it's inconvenient for me to cook for so many people by myself."
Jiang Yeming gave him a cold look. "I didn't ask you to do it. If you can't stand it, go back to your parents' house. Don't get in my way."
When the topic of going back to her parents' home came up, Chen Feng fell silent.
At this moment, Jiang Hongying and Mulan came in from outside.
"Boss, where's our tea stove? Let me start a fire." Jiang Hongying looked at the couple. "What's wrong? Did you two have a fight?"
"No, sister, please go inside and sit down. I'll get you some steamed buns; I'll bring them over once the stove is lit." Jiang Yeming smiled and walked out. "Come on, let's go sit in the main room."
Xia Mulan smiled at Chen Feng, but saw that she gave a perfunctory smile and turned her back to them to cut buckwheat buns.
Jiang Hongying glanced at Xia Mulan and gestured for her to come out.
Everyone was a little thirsty, and the fourth brother didn't expect Chen Feng to boil water for him. The eldest brother was busy with this and that, so he went to the kitchen to boil water himself.
Seeing Chen Feng's deadpan face, the fourth brother couldn't understand why his elder brother didn't divorce this woman; what was so good about her?
Like a piece of beef tendon, no matter how much you hit or scold it, it remains the same.
She had a smile on her face when she first came in, but now she has a long face as if someone owes her money.
The children were playing happily in the yard, and Xiao Xu and Xiu Juan generously gave Jiang Huan candy.
After eating two snacks and drinking some tea, Li Dazui saw the eldest brother preparing to kill a chicken, so he went home to feed the chickens.
The eldest son's courtyard only has three rooms with kang beds. He was busy preparing dinner, so Song Chunxue wanted to go to his house to check on things and clean the house before sleeping in the old house that night.
"Boss, I'll go check out the upstairs courtyard first. There's not enough room for all these people to sleep tonight. I'll go tidy things up."
Jiang Yeming stood up, picked up a piece of paper and covered the chicken blood with it. "Alright, it doesn't take many people to prepare a meal anyway, you can go if you want."
Sanwa hesitated for a moment, then said, "I'll help my older brother prepare the chicken, and Mulan will knead and roll the dough. You two go ahead."
Jiang Hongying glanced at Mulan, "No rush, I can go tomorrow. Mulan can go with Mother to clean the yard, and I'll knead the dough."
Mulan and Chen Feng are sisters-in-law. Chen Feng's triangular eyes look like she's not to be trifled with. If Mulan suffers any injustice, Sanwa will definitely feel sorry for her.
Mulan breathed a sigh of relief, put down the hemp leaves in her hand, and looked at Song Chunxue.
The second son has difficulty walking and wanted to eat after going upstairs, so he simply sat down and drank tea.
"Mother, you go ahead, I'll go boil some water," He Chuan said with a smile. "Chen Feng is heavily pregnant, we can take care of dinner."
Finally, Song Chunxue led Lao Si and Mulan to the old courtyard.
The rammed earth walls were mottled and loose, and weeds grew at the entrance, but the irrigation ditch was kept clean.
There were weeds in the yard, but not many, so it seems the eldest brother had cleared them before.
Pushing open the door to the north room, a whiff of dust hits you.
"I suddenly remembered the night Cheng San's wife came looking for Mother. Is this courtyard still habitable?" The fourth brother waved his hand. "Why don't we squeeze in at the eldest brother's house?"
"We feel comfortable here, let's stay here tonight."
The fourth child exclaimed, "Then I need a room with Mother. I'm too scared to sleep alone."
