Chapter 995 How Did You Know?
Late at night.
Song Chunxue leaned against Xie Zheng, his arm wrapped around her waist, and she could fall asleep at any moment with her eyes closed.
But Xie Zheng knew she wanted to go back, so he insisted on speaking.
"Hold on a little longer, you can sleep after we get back." Xie Zheng couldn't help but worry about her. "Oh, by the way, how are you going to get back to that cave?"
Song Chunxue opened her eyes and thought, "Oh no, am I going to have to fly back in a flying boat?"
She won't have the energy tomorrow.
"Go to sleep, I'm so sleepy." She didn't even have the strength to move her lips. Regardless of how she would get back tomorrow, she just needed to wake up first.
But in Xie Zheng's view, it was a rare opportunity to meet, and there was so much to say.
He lit another candle, got up and leaned against the pillow, held her in his arms, and every now and then brought the back of her hand to his chin, tickling her with his short stubble.
Song Chunxue wanted to kick someone.
She was so tired that her brain felt rusty.
"I'm really sleepy, if you move again I'll kick you out."
Xie Zheng laughed, "Okay, then you go to sleep, I'll keep an eye on you."
"..."
I don't know how much time passed.
The shouts, footsteps, and hoofbeats outside the door woke Song Chunxue from her sleep.
She slept so soundly that she was momentarily disoriented. Looking at the simple bed curtains, she remembered that she had come to find Xie Zheng last night.
Turning her head, she saw Xie Zheng's slightly thin face and couldn't help but smile.
"Sleep a little longer, no need to rush back."
Why?
He bent down and touched her forehead.
"Master Han transmitted his voice, saying that they would stay at your second brother's house for another day and take the opportunity to look around the neighborhood."
Without thinking too much, Song Chunxue turned around and hugged him, closed her eyes, found a comfortable sleeping position, and fell asleep again.
After a good night's sleep, she suddenly sat up in bed and noticed that the sun was shining through the gaps in the tent.
After meditating for a while to regain her strength, she dressed herself properly.
She needed to use the restroom, but she had to find a secluded spot.
Just as he was about to leave, Xie Zheng came in from outside carrying food.
When Xie Zheng saw her, he smiled and asked, "You're awake?"
He looked like he had shaved, and his complexion seemed much better.
"I'm awake," she said shyly in a low voice, "I'm going to the toilet."
"I'll take you there."
"But……"
“No one will ask.” Xie Zheng placed the wooden tray on the table. “I’ve been saying I’m recuperating from my injuries and haven’t been involved in any military affairs in the camp these past few days, so they won’t bother me.”
"Alright." She put on her face towel and followed him out. After walking for a long time, they saw a dry toilet built with thatched roof.
“Go ahead, nobody usually goes there, they all think it's too far.” Xie Zheng gently patted her back. “I checked, there’s no one inside.”
It's hard to describe the feeling; he would patiently accompany her to the outhouse.
Even though the patriarchal system in the village wasn't as strictly male-dominated as it was in the past, women were still a very important source of labor.
The era of men farming and women weaving is long gone; women now do just as much hard labor as men.
However, due to deeply ingrained traditional customs, men rarely value women's contributions. They either treat women as tools for bearing children or as emotionless livestock.
Because of the need to make a living, many people just make do with what they have.
Let alone accompanying someone to the outhouse, even helping to hang up the laundry would earn him the reputation of a good man.
When Song Chunxue came out of the outhouse, she found that many soldiers in the camp were greeting Lord Xie.
They merely looked curiously at the woman whose face was covered by a mask, but none of them asked any questions.
Song Chunxue remained silent.
Back in the tent, she ate something and prepared to meditate on the bed.
But Xie Zheng followed behind her, precisely wrapping his arms around her waist, and said, "You meditate, I'll keep you company."
He was quite clingy, which made Song Chunxue feel sweet inside.
"Don't you have anything else to do? Will this take up too much of your time?"
"No, I'm resting and recuperating, I have nothing to do." Xie Zheng held her hand. "The important thing today is to spend time with you."
"When are you going back?" he asked softly, gripping her wrist. "How about tomorrow morning?"
Although she was in a bit of a rush, she still nodded.
She just checked; the place she came to before, she can still go back to.
Fortunately, she had read related books before and vaguely remembered to mark them so that Xie Zheng could take that route next time he wanted to visit her.
However, she did not come from the other side; she needed to bring her personal belongings with her and attach the corresponding talismans.
Xie Zheng touched her cheek with satisfaction.
He didn't ask anything else, but got very close to her, as if he wanted to stick to her.
This intimacy pleased Song Chunxue, giving her a feeling of being cherished.
"You meditate, I won't disturb you." Meeting her gaze, Xie Zheng casually picked up a book, as if to say that he just wanted to be closer.
"Why are you meditating?" Song Chunxue leaned against him.
"Let's talk. I'll tell you about the places I've been to and the things that happened recently. You can tell me about your recent experiences too."
"Okay." He continued to hold her in his arms, insisting that she sit on his calves and lean her upper body against his chest before he was satisfied.
This is nothing like the Xie Zheng of the past.
He used to be so particular about etiquette, always refined and cultured, sitting and standing properly, never leaning on anything like this without any backbone.
After arriving at the military camp, he changed a lot, becoming much more casual and rough.
He was quite different from the refined and cultured Lord Xie in my memory.
"What are your plans now?" she asked curiously. "Is your situation in the court not good?"
She couldn't bring herself to suggest that he resign and return to his hometown to protect himself; that would be too selfish. Everyone has their own principles.
Moreover, Xie Zheng's situation is complicated, and that dog emperor may not necessarily be willing to release him.
Several times she wanted to say it, but she silently swallowed it back.
"No, it's much better than before." Xie Zheng pulled her into his arms, subconsciously playing with her fingers and examining her palm lines.
"I'll come find you once I've made some arrangements." Xie Zheng casually recounted the situation in the capital to her. "I'll do my best and leave the rest to fate. I won't worry about anything else anymore. I just want to take good care of the child and you. You don't need to worry about anything else."
Song Chunxue took out some pastries and steamed buns she had bought on Jincheng Street from her storage ring. "Would you like some tea?"
"Alright." Xie Zheng stood up. "I'll have someone bring a tea stove."
"By the way, where's Liu Chunshu?" Song Chunxue asked curiously. "Didn't he come with you?"
Xie Zheng took her hand and got off the plane. "I sent him back to take care of his wife and children. I found him a young, unmarried servant, but he was clumsy and I sent him back."
Song Chunxue came to the table, wanting to find a comfortable chair to sit down, when suddenly she felt a weight on her waist and was lifted up and placed on the soft cushion in front of the low table like a child.
This behavior was very childish, and Song Chunxue felt a little shy. Why did he love hugging people so much?
Luckily, there was no one else around, otherwise it would be so mushy if someone saw us.
They're not young anymore, yet they're so lovey-dovey.
"How do you know that other old married couples aren't this lovey-dovey?" Lord Xie can now say things he would never have said before without batting an eye.
