Meng Qi forced herself not to think about anything else, closing her eyes and lying there, but she couldn't fall asleep. The conversation with Princess Fanghua had created a tacit understanding between the two, but it wasn't to the point of being frank.
Take the Empress's "illness" for example. Even if Fanghua didn't know the truth, they had been living together for so long that how could they not hear the wind? Whether it was a real illness or a fake one, looking at the state of Prince Cheng and his wife, I'm afraid it's not a good thing for them.
Meng Qi turned over. If the Empress's illness was real, who had frightened her out of it? If it was fake, what was she pretending to be doing, or who was she trying to drag down?
In a daze, Meng Qi heard a voice outside and shouted, "Who's outside?"
A young palace maid came in, followed by Ms. Li.
Meng Qi also thought about it. Since she brought her in, she would naturally not leave her there unused. She wanted to test Fang Hua yesterday. Since the two of them had a tacit understanding, there was no need to be so deliberate about some things.
Ms. Li stepped forward to help Meng Qi, but Meng Qi waved her hand, "What time is it?"
"It's midnight." Ms. Li took the cloak handed to her by the young palace maid and put it on Meng Qi. "Would you like some snacks?"
"Is there any movement from Princess Fanghua?" Meng Qi shook her head.
"When I came here, the lights over there had just been lit."
"Well, let's go." Meng Qi took a deep breath.
"Aren't you waiting for Princess Fanghua?" Ms. Li was puzzled.
Meng Qi walked out without answering. It was really cold in the middle of the night in late autumn. Frost had already formed on the bluestone bricks. Meng Qi walked carefully. Sure enough, after a while, Fang Hua's dissatisfied voice came from behind her, "How rude! We live in the same room after all, and you can't just call out."
Meng Qi stopped and looked back at Fang Hua limping up to catch up. "I thought the princess had left long ago."
Fang Hua walked past Meng Qi, snorted coldly, and said to Ms. Li who was standing beside Meng Qi, "Remember this, your princess broke one of my favorite teacups. Later, you remind her to give me the best set of her dowry."
After saying this, he raised his head and crossed the hanging flower gate of the west courtyard. Ms. Li glanced at Meng Qi awkwardly. Meng Qi whispered, "You are so petty. Have you visited the Empress?"
Ms. Li quickly followed, "Yes, I went there in the afternoon, just as the Queen had just woken up from her nap. Aunt Mo said that she really tormented the Queen last night, and she didn't leave until Prince Cheng and the Princess entered the palace."
Meng Qi nodded and motioned for Ms. Li to continue, "I only greeted Her Majesty on behalf of the Princess, explaining why it was inconvenient for Her Majesty to personally pay her respects right away. Her Majesty instructed me to have Her Majesty serve Her Majesty well, and that she need not worry."
"Did you find out anything? Why was Concubine Lian serving the Empress last night?"
Ms. Li looked around and whispered, "It's said that when the Empress was carried back to Kunning Palace, Princess Yong'an begged the Emperor to allow Prince Cheng and his wife to enter the palace, but the Emperor refused. The Imperial Physician examined her and said she was frightened and prescribed medicine, but the medicine wouldn't go in. The Emperor was very anxious and someone suggested asking Concubine Lian to take a look. Perhaps massaging her would be more effective."
Meng Qi stopped and turned to look at Ms. Li. Ms. Li shook her head and said, "I can't find out who reminded the emperor. It was only Princess Yong'an who asked the emperor to let Concubine Lian try."
Nonsense, Concubine Lian could only massage the emperor's head and back to help him relax. How could she possibly wake up a frightened person? Acupuncture would be more believable.
It seems that someone is taking advantage of the Queen's fainting to make things difficult for Concubine Lian, or even to target Song Chengze?
"Go on." Meng Qi turned around and continued walking.
"Empress Lian was invited here. It was said that she was massaged for a long time. It was not until she was massaging the soles of the Empress' feet that she breathed a sigh of relief." Ms. Li said carefully.
Meng Qi's suspicions were confirmed. The Empress was definitely faking it, but was her sole purpose simply to embarrass Concubine Lian by having her feet massaged? Wasn't this a bit of an exaggeration? While Concubine Lian was a concubine, in the Empress's eyes, she was nothing more than a concubine. Concubines couldn't even object to being asked to massage the mistress' feet, let alone carry the urinal daily.
Therefore, the Queen Mother was not targeting Concubine Lian this time, and Concubine Lian was slapped in the face like this, and she was afraid that someone was taking advantage of the situation.
But after all, it was because of the trouble caused by the Queen that Concubine Lian suffered this unexpected disaster. Is there any way to get some revenge?
"When Aunt Mo sent me out, she said that when Concubine Lian returned to Qionghua Palace late last night, both of her arms were swollen and her fingers were bloodless. It took her a long time before she could move freely." Ms. Li said with concern.
Meng Qi nodded. She didn't know whether Song Chengze knew about these situations, but since he came yesterday, he must know. He might even see his mother's appearance.
"Sixth sister-in-law, come in quickly. It's very cold at night." Princess Jing greeted Meng Qi warmly, then turned back to Fang Hua and said, "I didn't expect you to come so early. I thought you wouldn't be well in the cold weather, so I asked your sixth sister-in-law to come over early to keep an eye on you."
Meng Qi let Ms. Li take off her cloak, scoffing inwardly. Princess Jing was indeed the most articulate of the princesses, and the one who understood her prince best. In one sentence, she first criticized her for arriving later than Fanghua, then praised Fanghua for her filial piety, and even pointed out Fanghua's leg disease without leaving any trace.
"Let me see, I'm afraid that Sixth Sister-in-law fell asleep? Or can't sleep in another place? Instead, she walked behind Fanghua. Oh, could it be that she is unwilling to serve the Queen?" Princess Duan covered her mouth with a handkerchief and looked at Meng Qi with a smile.
