The last family before the fifteenth day of the first lunar month was going to Prince Cheng's mansion, which was the fourteenth day of the first lunar month. Princess Cheng took Meng Qi's hand and said, "I originally thought you would choose to hold it before the palace banquet, so I simply gave you a few more days, but I didn't expect you to move it to after the fifteenth. If I had known this would happen, we would have chosen two days earlier."
Meng Qi sighed as Princess Cheng pulled her along. "Originally, I wanted to do it before the fifteenth, but when I went back to my parents' home on the third day, the prince got mad at me and looked down on me. How could I dare to bring it up again?"
Princess Cheng smiled contemptuously and said, "I don't know why I'm angry with you. It's about you and Hongzhe. You think no one knows about it. Just wait and see what happens."
Meng Qi thought that Ms. Li had better not let her down. She should let her use her once, and it should be a hard one.
After returning from Prince Cheng's palace, Lady Li fell ill. The servants at Prince Rui's palace were saying her symptoms were the same as Lady Zhang's, and that medicine hadn't helped, with a severe cough. The maidservant who attended to Lady Li found an excuse to leave, and the next day, Madam Liu sent a strong-looking maid to tend to her. However, her condition continued to improve, and after the first month of the lunar year, she was sent to the farm. Just as the willow branches were beginning to sprout, news of Lady Li's death reached her. But that's a story for another time.
That day, Song Chengze and Meng Qi returned from Prince Cheng's Mansion. As soon as they got off the carriage at the east gate of the mansion, they saw a woman getting off a carriage and rushing to Prince Rui with a letter in her hand.
Meng Qi was startled and looked carefully, and it turned out to be Meng Juan.
"Big sister, why are you here? Is there something wrong at home?"
Meng Juan pointed at Meng Qi with a shaking finger, then looked at Song Chengze, "Does the prince know the good things your princess has done?"
Song Chengze turned to look at Meng Qi with a confused look on his face. Meng Qi stepped forward and tried to hold Meng Juan's hand. "What do you mean, big sister? Why don't we talk inside the mansion?"
"What? You dare to do it but not take responsibility for it? Or are you afraid that the prince will find out and divorce you? You shameless person."
"Ms. Meng, be careful with your words." Song Chengze said unhappily.
"Be careful with your words? Haha, I do want to be careful with my words, but some people dare to speak loudly. Your Highness, look at this."
Meng Qi looked at the letter Meng Juan handed over, and suddenly his eyes lit up. He seemed to have thought of something, and stepped forward to grab it. Song Chengze raised his hand, and Meng Qi missed.
"Big sister, what do you mean? How did this letter end up in your hands?"
Meng Juan looked at Meng Qi's nervous expression and smiled coldly, "There's more than one letter." She then took out another and handed it to the already displeased Song Chengze, "Your Highness, please take a look at this one. Your Highness, tell me, what kind of evil people are you and I? We separated this pair of mandarin ducks and ruined their good marriage, and now we have them breaking up each other's hearts in this way."
Song Chengze took another letter and glanced at it briefly. His face turned cold and he turned to Chu Yong and said, "Send Grandma Hong San back."
Meng Juan shouted, "What? Your Highness, are you just going to let it go? You're not going to give it to this pair of dogs and bitches..."
Before she could finish her words, Meng Qi stepped forward and slapped Meng Juan, leaving her standing there dumbfounded. How could this happen? She was clearly the victim, and the slap should have been given to Meng Qi.
She had felt that something was wrong with Hong Zhe recently, especially on the third day of the Lunar New Year when he and Meng Qi returned to the main courtyard of the wife of Marquis Huainan one after the other. She saw the meaningful expression on Hong Zhe's face and Meng Qi's flushed face. She began to pay more attention to Hong Zhe at that time.
After returning to the Hong family, she used a large sum of money to bribe a maid in Hongzhe's study. The maid was half threatened by Meng Juan and half received a large sum of money, so she paid more attention to the letters in Hongzhe's study.
Within a few days, several letters with elegant handwriting were sent to Meng Juan, but none of them were what she wanted to see. Could it be that it was not what she thought it was? But Meng Juan did not give up. Today, the girl came to report that Hong Zhe had gone out again, and took a few close friends with him. The outer courtyard study was now empty.
Meng Juan hurried over and asked the girl to watch the door while she carefully searched through the papers. However, she actually found two letters in the pages of a book.
When she opened it, she felt as if struck by lightning. She couldn't believe that the words on it were written by her husband. They were written so sincerely and affectionately.
She almost cried as she opened another letter that was clearly written by a woman. That letter didn't contain any overly sentimental words, just ordinary expressions of concern, but Meng Juan recognized Meng Qi's handwriting.
Holding the two letters, Meng Juan couldn't wait a moment longer. Thinking about the grievances she had suffered in the Hong family since her marriage, and the way Mrs. Hong and her sisters-in-law looked at her because she hadn't been able to get pregnant, she seemed to have found an outlet for venting.
She had originally wanted to ask Madam Hong to help her, but she wondered how she would tell anyone about her son's scandal. Gritting her teeth, she took the letter and went straight to Prince Rui's mansion.
The maid went to inquire and found out that the prince and princess were not at home, as they had gone to attend a banquet during the first month of the lunar year. However, she was still unwilling to give up hope, and looking at the time, she felt that they should be back soon, so she simply sat in the carriage and waited.
The letter Meng Juan found was originally one of several Hong Zhe had written. Later, he felt it was too explicit. He was afraid that if Meng Qi got upset again after the incident, she would show this letter. Even if he said someone else had forged his handwriting or that Meng Qi had done it on purpose, it would still cause suspicion. So, he simply wrote another letter that he thought was passable, but still expressed his longing, and quietly sent it off. He casually placed this letter with the one Meng Qi had written to him.
Seeing Song Chengze's furrowed brow and Meng Qi's flushed cheeks, Meng Juan felt a tinge of pride. She waited for Song Chengze to tuck the two letters into his arms, tell her he knew, and then tug at Meng Qi's sleeve and enter the palace. As she sat in the carriage back to the Hong family, a deep sense of unease welled up in Meng Juan's heart.
