Chapter 198 Sisters Meet Again

Meng Qi's face was solemn as she left Marquis Huainan's study, a hint of confusion. After all she had said to Meng Changfeng, he hadn't shared the reason for his concern, or the truth. She suspected something was wrong with Meng Hai, or perhaps Prince Cheng? Could it be that they were planning to take action early?

As for the racecourse, Meng Changfeng mentioned it clearly, probably with the intention of revealing it to Song Chengze. Prince Cheng must be planning or arranging something there.

Meng Qi just felt a headache. What Meng Changfeng said today was beyond her ability. She would go back and tell Song Chengze about it and let him worry about it.

Thinking of what she had said to Meng Changfeng before leaving, "Grandfather, I understand your concerns. I don't know how far this will go. I can only tell you that if Third Uncle fails and the Rui Palace remains the Rui Palace in the end, I will do my utmost to protect Grandmother and Second Uncle's family."

Seeing Meng Changfeng's eyes dimming instantly, Meng Qi knew that Meng Changfeng understood what she meant.

"If Third Uncle succeeds in the end, please also make plans early, Grandfather. I've said that Third Uncle isn't interested in this. There are some things you have to prepare for, even if it's for Grandmother. As for my mother and Third Brother, you don't have to worry too much. I believe that both Second Sister and I are capable of protecting them."

Meng Changfeng sighed and waved his hand at Meng Qi, "Go ahead and tell the prince what I told you today. He knows what to do."

When Meng Qi returned to Wang's Shanzhi Hall, Meng Wan had already returned.

"I wanted to go see grandpa too, but grandma stopped me. Is he okay?" Meng Wan asked with concern.

Meng Qi nodded, went into the room and lay down on the chaise longue, yelling for Mother Guo to bring her a bowl of ice.

Wang reached out and touched her forehead. "What do you think? What if the prince sees this?"

"He's not Sun Wukong. How can he come in and see what it's like when I go back to my parents' home?"

Meng Qi sat up straight and buried her head in Wang's arms, "Mom, I want to eat an ice bowl."

"No, it's not the right time yet. Besides, you just had a miscarriage not long ago, you can't touch anything cold." Wang patted Meng Qi gently.

Meng Wan sat down opposite him and asked, "Grandfather, what did you ask me to do?"

Meng Qi raised her head and nodded as Wang brushed her loose hair. "I don't quite understand the details. I'll talk to the prince when I get back. Mother, I heard that Jiang has been very close to Third Aunt recently."

Wang tapped her forehead and said, "Don't say that. She is your sister-in-law."

"Well, I'm already giving her face by calling her Jiang." Meng Qi snorted coldly, "She's so shallow. I haven't even settled the score with her for the last time she contradicted you."

"That's nothing. She just doesn't want to accompany me to see you. If she doesn't want to go, then don't go. It's no big deal." Wang said gently.

Seeing that Meng Qi was unwilling to say more about what Meng Changfeng had said, Meng Wan stopped asking and followed Meng Qi in trying to make Wang happy.

According to the agreement between the two, after having some snacks in Wang's courtyard, they said goodbye and went to Meng Wan's dowry courtyard in Jinchuan Hutong.

Meng Wan sat there listening to Meng Qi talk about the news she had found out about Concubine Hui.

"Second sister, what is the relationship between this Huipin and the Prince? Is she important to your investigation into the matter of my second brother-in-law's mother?"

Meng Wan nodded. "That's right. Your second brother-in-law and I suspect she's one of the reasons why the prince has always held a grudge against his mother-in-law."

Meng Qi was a little surprised. "Could it be that Prince Shen wanted to marry Concubine Hui, but your mother-in-law stopped him?"

Meng Wan told Meng Qi everything she and Zhou Yu had thought about Concubine Hui. Meng Qi's mouth hung open for a long moment before she said, "How could she be so capable? How could she have been so comfortable meeting the Prince in the palace?"

For a concubine who has no children and is not favored to be able to achieve this, there must be someone behind her.

(This part is about Huipin's story. Please read the second half of "After Marrying in Substitution, I Was Forced into a Family Fight" for a detailed account of this person's situation.)

Meng Wan stood up and said, "You said that the Emperor sentenced her to death because someone reported her for having an affair with a man outside her family?"

Meng Qi nodded. "Yes, almost no servants from her palace were left. It seems that those who knew about it were all dealt with. This old woman escaped because she fell ill during those few days and was moved to the West Six Palaces."

"Who could it be? To be able to have an affair with the Emperor's concubines, he must be someone who often walks around the palace and has great abilities." Meng Wan paced back and forth. "Did they hand the evidence of that man to the late Empress?"

Meng Qi hummed, "It's said that the late queen nearly fainted after seeing the evidence. Could it be that the late queen recognized the belt?"

Meng Wan stood still, hands gently clasping the table. "No, Sister Qi, I always feel like there's a crack, but why can't I get through? Try again, try again..."

The two sisters started over again, until Meng Qi slammed the table and said, "Since it can't be a guard, and even less likely to be Prince Shen, and the other princes are also unlikely, then there can only be one."

Meng Wan looked at Meng Qi's excitement, and a name was on the tip of his tongue. "You mean, it's the prince?"

Meng Qi nodded, "Yes, it must be him. He is the only one who has the conditions to meet Huipin."

Meng Wan nodded excitedly. "Let me think about it again. The Crown Prince knew about Concubine Hui's past with the Prince, and the late Empress was tortured because of the affair between the Emperor and the late Empress Dowager, and the late Empress Dowager also disliked the late Empress. So, the Crown Prince used this relationship to win over Prince Shen, and on the other hand, he took advantage of the Prince's love for Concubine Hui to frame my mother-in-law."
