Chapter 3 Understanding the Situation (I)

During that period, Meng Juan became a frequent visitor to Qinyuan. Once and twice, under Meng Juan's persuasion and deliberateness, she wrote the letter and begged Meng Juan to take it out to Hong Zhe.

She believed at that time that after reading the letter, Hongzhe would definitely cancel the engagement and come to propose to her. She looked forward to it every day.

But what did she wait for? She waited for the fury of Meng Changfeng, the Marquis of Huainan, waited for her father to slap her mother hard, waited for her eldest brother, Meng Shao, to watch her mother take the stool swung by her father to protect her, and then stood there motionless.

Meng Qi closed her eyes. She looked at Wang Shi, who was hit hard by a stool by Meng Yuan, the son of Huainan Marquis, her father. She was holding her and bleeding from the corner of her mouth, begging Meng Changfeng in a hoarse voice to let her go.

Tears flowed again.

Meng Changfeng took the letter and slammed it in his mother's face, saying that she had brought disgrace upon the Huainan Marquisate. If Sister Juan hadn't given him the letter, the Huainan Marquisate would have become a laughing stock in the entire capital, no, the entire world.

Meng Qi looked at the letter that was floating gently down. It was the letter that she had written to Hong Zhe with such sincerity that she had even bitten her finger to make the handprint.

Didn't Meng Juan say that she would definitely give it to Hong Zhe? Why didn't she give it to Hong Zhe, but gave it to Grandpa instead?

Meng Qi just felt a severe headache. Looking at her mother who had fainted and was carried out by everyone, she wanted to reach out her hand, but her whole body was in pain. The slap from Meng Yuan made her want to call for her mother but couldn't.

She was taken back to Qin Garden. Jiang stood with her hands on her hips, scolding the maid for keeping a close watch on her while speaking sarcastically about herself.

Meng Qi felt like she was in a dream, watching Jiang talking non-stop. It seemed as if she couldn't hear what she said, but she knew it must not be good, as her face was full of disgust and aversion.

Just when the old woman came in in a panic and said that the prince's wife was in trouble, Jiang said fiercely, "Why are you crying? It would be better if she died. She can't even teach a daughter well. She is bringing shame to the Marquis's Mansion if she lives." After saying that, she turned around and walked out.

Meng Qi finally heard clearly. She pulled a maid to ask who was wrong and what happened to her mother. But no one answered. She tried to leave, but was dragged back.

Later, Meng Juan came and first told her mother that she was fine. She asked the imperial physician to come and see her, and the physician said that it was anger that caused her mother to have a good rest.

She also explained that she hadn't given the letter to Meng Changfeng. It was inconvenient for her to go out, so she asked her uncle to find a chance to take it out. It was almost successful, but Meng Shao discovered the clues. Her uncle didn't dare to hide it, so he gave the letter to Meng Shao.

------

"So, the marriage between Meng Wan and Zhou Yu was arranged by the Marquis of Pingxi?"

Madam Liu heard Meng Qi addressing Meng Wan by her first name, and after a moment's reflection, she said, "Fourth Miss, I'm going to say something a little overboard. Your breaking off of the engagement with Mr. Zhou Er has been a major citywide rumor. If it weren't for Second Miss, it wouldn't have been resolved so smoothly. I've noticed you've been getting closer recently, especially since the Emperor granted you the marriage. After their long conversation, I think they're truly thinking about you."

Meng Qi was a bit surprised; she didn't initially grasp the meaning of Madam Liu's words. Although she didn't understand the details, Meng Wan's arrangement for her to marry into the Shenjun Prince's mansion saved both families' reputations and fulfilled his own desires. Regardless of how she'd recognized him, based on that alone, and her mother's joy at having her back, she would give Meng Wan the fullest respect.

Seeing Meng Qi's puzzled expression, Madam Liu stepped forward and continued, "Fourth Miss, have you also forgotten that when you boarded Third Master Hong's carriage, the Crown Prince's wife fainted from fright, and it was Second Miss who saved her."

"Oh?" Meng Qi was stunned. "Tell me about it together."

"Miss Si, you wouldn't, wouldn't you forget those things too, would you? How many things are there that you can't remember?" Mother Liu looked worried.

Meng Qi waved her hand and said, "I don't know either. It's not like I can't remember everything. Just tell me what I want to ask you, one paragraph at a time."
