Madam Hai's Courtyard
A woman wearing a veil came into the yard under the cover of night.
"It was all your good idea. Now that I've been fired, I wonder how you're going to explain it to me."
The woman took off her veil, revealing a pretty face. "Why did you hand over your cards? You know, it's easy to hand them over, but it's extremely difficult to get them back." The woman said unhappily.
"Nonsense, I know this, but Zhang Decheng brought that Liu Mama to pick it up, how can I not give it to her?"
"What did you say? Zhang Decheng brought people to get it?" the woman said in surprise.
Nanny Hai said sadly, "At first, Li Mancang came to the East Wing looking for me. He said that the prince said I had been too busy recently because of his wedding and really needed some time to rest. He asked me to come home and rest for a few days. I was thinking that after all, I had a quarrel with the princess, and I was afraid that Yuan Dong's words had embarrassed the prince, so coming back to rest for a few days would be a good thing. I also wanted to see the prince, but Li Mancang said that the prince was very busy and we could talk about it later when we had time."
Matron Hai sighed. "I figured, since that's the case, I wouldn't cause trouble for the prince, so I just came back. But early this morning, Zhang Decheng showed up, bringing along Madam Liu and that Hu Erjia. You didn't see how that Hu Erjia looked; she was truly infuriating. Now that I think about it, Meng brought Hu Erjia's Baba to her just a few days after she came into the family. She was after me. She must have heard about the old grudges between me and the Hu family and wanted to disgust me."
"I was careless. When she brought Hu Erjia close to her, I should have stopped and guessed her intentions. It's all your fault. If you hadn't said this was an opportunity to test the prince's true opinion of Meng and to use it as a chance to pressure Meng, what a mess it would be now. How will it end?"
The woman sat down and said, "Madam, why are you so anxious? I think this is not a bad thing. Maybe the prince did it on purpose."
Matron Hai looked over and asked, "What do you mean?"
"Tell me, does the prince dislike the princess?"
"Needless to say, it's more than just dislike, it's outright disgust. Who would like marrying in with such a reputation, and seeing the world and the prince quarreling?" Nanny Hai said angrily.
"When she first came in, the prince clearly said that the household expenses would not be handed over to her for the time being, and would be managed by the three of you. But now, Meng first threatened Xiao Lin, and now she is using Youzi to make trouble for you, and the prince obviously supports her. Let me see, the last time the princess and the prince had a quarrel, it was not because of drinking too much and catching someone cheating, but because Meng was going for the power of the housekeeper. So the prince had to let Meng be the housekeeper. No matter what, she is the legitimate princess. Asking you to hand it over means letting Meng mess around. When she makes a mess, the prince will have a reason to take these things back." The woman said softly.
"You mean the prince did it on purpose?"
"I think so. Think about it. Zhang Decheng only brought Madam Liu to take back your inner house's matching cards, but he didn't tell you to hand over the prince's other matters in the inner house to Meng."
Nanny Hai's eyes lit up. "Yes, the prince must have done this on purpose." There were three people in charge, and the prince couldn't let the other two hand them over first, so he had no choice but to be the vanguard.
Seeing Nanny Hai's understanding look, the woman smiled faintly, "So, what you did yesterday wasn't a mess. On the contrary, it was a great help to the prince."
"So, you're thinking ahead. Was my trip to Jing'an Garden the right one?"
"I wouldn't say I'm thinking ahead. When I suggested you go, I was simply testing the waters. You don't know your own identity or your own situation, yet you dare to confront the prince. Not to mention this is the prince's palace, if it were any other large family, her behavior would have long been disliked by her husband and mother-in-law."
Matron Hai said bitterly, "You do have a point. Fine, I'll just get over my illness. I want to see how the Meng family ends up when the courtyard gets into chaos. But, can chaos really happen?"
The woman smiled faintly. "Of course, there will be chaos. Xiao Lin and Li are not free. And Wu, she came up to you eagerly today. Who knows what she is thinking? Just wait and see. In less than half a year, Meng will be forced to come and ask you for help. And if chaos really doesn't come, I am still here. I will also make it happen. Even if it doesn't come now, who can say for sure what will happen in a year or two."
Matron Hai nodded. "You're right, but I'm truly unsure. Let me tell you, no matter what the situation is, you promised me that once I've done what I promised, you can't do anything else, especially regarding the prince himself. By helping you with all this, I've truly failed the prince's trust in me. If..."
"Mammy, that's not right. You're not helping me, you're helping yourself. Think about it, if I hadn't reached out, and the person behind me hadn't reached out, what would your family be like now? Do we even need to meet and discuss this?"
When Hai Ma heard this, her eyes widened. "You, don't be so ruthless."
The woman stood up, turned around, picked up her veil and put it on. "You are wrong. You haven't even crossed the bridge yet. How could I tear it down?" After that, she stood up and left. Nanny Hai watched her walk out of her yard and knocked on the headboard with gritted teeth.
The woman walked to the back corner door of the palace for servants to enter and exit, clapped her hands lightly, and the door creaked open. "Why did it take so long? I just sent the maid who came to look for Ye away." An old woman with goldfish eyes said impatiently.
The woman came in and took out a purse and handed it to the gatekeeper. The gatekeeper took the purse and put on a flattering smile, "Thank you for your hard work. If you need me again, just come when I'm on duty."
