Chapter 66: A long conversation between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law

"Do you know what the outcome would be if what you just said were just guesses?" There was no emotion in Lian Fei's voice again.

"If it's just my speculation, and Mother doesn't resonate with me, I will continue to do this for the Prince. It may be difficult in the palace, but I won't give up. And if what I just said is not speculation, even though this is the palace, I'm afraid I will hear some information and news earlier than you, and in more detail. After all, you are an indifferent person."

Concubine Lian once again sized Meng Qi up and down. She was truly shocked by what she had just said. Ever since their marriage, her son had only met her once, and that was a fleeting encounter. He had only told her to give Meng a chance and that she would behave well.

However, Lian Fei did not expect Meng Qi to say such words. Rather than saying them, it could be said that it was Meng Qi's confession to her. She said those words in the most direct, effective, but also possibly the most dangerous way.

Her attitude towards Xiaoliu had aroused others' suspicion, and some people had tested her, especially when the emperor had just ascended the throne and Emperor Jing'an's sons had become the emperor's sons from being the sons of princes. The future was full of temptations, and the number and size of the competitors were too important to them.

Therefore, she became even more afraid. She did not dare to show any sign of it. Even when the servants bullied Xiaoliu in front of her, she simply stopped them and did not take any further action to protect Xiaoliu.

For so many years, she avoided everyone's suspicion and successfully created the illusion that she did not like her son and that her son was not close to her.

She also used this illusion to provide so much for her son to gain a foothold and stand firm.

She also knew that Meng Qi wanted a promise from her, a promise to acknowledge her as one of her own. Although she couldn't give it to her now, as Xiao Liu had said, she had to give her a chance to perform. Who knew what the future would hold?

And what Meng Qi said was right. Even though she was disguised like this, she still couldn't touch the things in the palace and some places, just like the thing that had been bothering her and her son recently.

"Oh? Could it be that you heard some information?" Lian Fei asked.

"Does mother know that there is someone belonging to Princess Duan, or rather, Noble Concubine Xiang, in Kunning Palace?"

Concubine Lian smiled faintly. "What do you think? Each of these palaces is like a royal palace. Who doesn't have their own people in other people's homes? And who doesn't have a few people from other families in their own home? Is this what you're talking about?"

Meng Qi also laughed and said, "That's right, but does Mother know who it is? What does it do?"

Concubine Lian was startled, then looked at Meng Qi carefully again, "You know?"

Meng Qi nodded. "I wouldn't say it's 100 percent certain, but I'm 90 percent certain. There's a third-rank maid in Kunning Palace who's specifically responsible for delivering and picking up laundry for the lower-ranking maids and eunuchs. She goes to the laundry room near 'Hanyuan' and 'Rongyang Palace' almost every day."

Concubine Lian looked at Meng Qi in surprise. How did she know?

And she also mentioned Hanyuan and Rongyang Palace. Is she hinting at something?

Meng Qi continued, "The last time I entered the palace, I saw that third-class maid talking to Princess Duan for quite a while. Even though Princess Duan didn't speak to her today, the maid accidentally soiled the skirt of the lady beside her, and it took her quite a while to change her clothes. On a day like today, a third-class maid probably wouldn't be qualified to serve."

"What's your name?" asked Concubine Lian.

"Chun Lai." Meng Qi didn't wait for Concubine Lian to ask how she found out and continued, "During the few days my daughter-in-law stayed here before her wedding, she had a maid named Qinxiang by her side. It just so happens that she's here today."

Only then did Concubine Lian put away her suspicion, which had even made her look like a child, and once again carefully looked Meng Qi up and down. After a long while, she nodded and said, "Tell me about what happened when Prince Duan went to the palace that day."

Meng Qi slowly told her what she had learned that day. Concubine Lian nodded and said, "Xiao Liu didn't tell me why Prince Duan went to the palace?"

"The prince didn't tell my wife, but I think it's not a good thing. I also suspect that the prince's injury is related to Prince Duan."

Lian Fei clenched the teacup in her hand and glanced up at Meng Qi. "Didn't Xiao Liu tell you?"

Meng Qi hummed, "Perhaps the prince feels that it is not yet time for me to understand these things. Although I want to help you more, I also know that my ability is limited. I am working hard to grow and hope that one day I can become a good wife to you, and I also hope to be a daughter-in-law that the queen will be satisfied with."

Meng Qi couldn't say any more. She didn't know how Song Chengze told Concubine Lian about what happened that day. Maybe Song Chengze didn't even have the chance to tell Concubine Lian. She was afraid that someone who passed the message between them told her. Then, there were some things that Concubine Lian would not be able to know, and she would not say it out loud.

"You really impressed me. I can almost see what the Rui Palace will look like in the future."

Meng Qi's heart leaped with joy, and she let out a long sigh. "Thank you, Mother, for the compliment. However, I'm still young and haven't experienced much, so I can't see many things clearly. I know it's inconvenient for you and you don't have the time to teach me. I just hope you can remind me when I make a mistake."

"It's better to make mistakes. Sometimes making mistakes is more satisfying than doing the right thing. Do you understand?" Lian Fei said.

Meng Qi smiled bitterly. It seemed like both mother and daughter were more pleased with him playing the fool. That's right. Based on his reputation and behavior in his previous life, being too clever would only arouse suspicion. It would be better to just run around recklessly and be annoying.

"Yes, daughter-in-law understands. I had a small dispute with Princess Duan and Princess Fanghua today." After saying that, she picked out the important things that happened today and told Concubine Lian in detail.
