Chapter 70: Couple's Night Talk (Part 2)

Meng Qi and Song Chengze greeted each other and asked softly, "Your Highness, are you ready for dinner?"

"No, I'll discuss it with them when I get back."

Su Xin, who was following behind, heard this and quickly turned to order the kitchen to add more food. Yuan Dong took the cloak that Song Chengze had taken off and hung it on the clothes rack, poured tea for the two of them, and quietly retreated.

"It is said that you and your mother chatted for more than half an hour today."

Meng Qi nodded, "Isn't it too long?"

"What do you mean? Are you afraid of disturbing mother or something else?" Song Chengze looked up at her after taking a sip of tea.

Meng Qi smiled slightly, "Of course I'm afraid of being misunderstood. After all, Concubine Lian rarely even sees her newborn son, yet she's spending such a long time with her idiot daughter-in-law."

Song Chengze laughed when he heard her say this, "Maybe she thinks her daughter-in-law is too bad, so she just wants to teach her a lesson."

Meng Qi smiled and said, "So, tomorrow, Concubine Lian will be very angry and ask Prince Rui to come to the palace. The two of them will talk for a long time, and the atmosphere is not very good. And Princess Rui feels wronged because of this, so she will find faults with other concubines in the palace and make a big fuss about it. What do you think?"

Song Chengze was stunned. This Meng Qi was too clever. How did she think that his mother would meet him? And she came up with such a perfect excuse.

"Is this what Mother meant?"

"No, that's what I thought of. Mother was very satisfied with my performance today."

"Oh? How satisfied are you?" Song Chengze looked at Meng Qi gently, like a child eager to be praised by an adult.

Meng Qi stood up and bowed to Song Chengze, "I made a bold guess today."

Song Chengze put away his smile and asked, "What?"

"My conversation with my mother today was based on the confirmation that my guess was correct." Meng Qi was not going to beat around the bush with Song Chengze. It was particularly important to gain the trust of the mother and son now.

Seeing that Song Chengze didn't respond, he just stared at her with no emotion visible.

Meng Qi exhaled and said, "I've always thought that there's no mother in this world who doesn't love her children. Just like my eldest brother, who disobeyed my mother because of my eldest sister-in-law, and who wasn't on good terms with my mother after marrying into our family, often teaming up with my second aunt to fight for power in my mother's hands. Yet, my mother still cared for and loved my eldest brother, never saying a harsh word. For example, I don't need to talk about the past. Since last year, I've made so many mistakes that have completely humiliated my mother in front of my grandparents and my father, yet my mother still cares for me and loves me."

Song Chengze seemed to have guessed what Meng Qi was going to say. He picked up the teacup and gently scraped it but did not bring it to his mouth to drink.

"So, I dare to guess that Concubine Lian loves the prince very much. It's just that your situation doesn't allow this love to be known to everyone. In order to avoid unnecessary trouble, you even have to pretend to be indifferent so that people will not be on guard against you."

Song Chengze put down the teacup and looked Meng Qi up and down with narrowed eyes.

Meng Qi was wearing a casual jacket and skirt. The elegant blue water lake color was not suitable for winter. It made her slightly thin body look even colder and more mature than her actual age.

"You're really brave to guess." Meng Qi heard the crisp sound of the teacup hitting the table.

Meng Qi bowed again, "Please forgive me, Your Highness. I know I shouldn't speculate on such matters, but for the sake of what's next, clarifying the true relationship between you and the Empress will be more beneficial and will also reduce the chances of me making mistakes."

Song Chengze didn't respond, "You are quite smart."

"That's what my mother praised me too."

This sentence made Song Chengze smile, and Meng Qi also breathed a sigh of relief.

Song Chengze may appear warm and amiable, but he's actually extremely sensitive and very measured in everything. If you're being clever and doing something he doesn't want you to touch or know, even if it's the right thing to do, he won't be happy. He might even suspect how you came up with it, or if he accidentally revealed it. He might even suspect you're doing something behind his back.

Although they had never been close in their past lives, they had lived together for over two years, so she knew him well. In this life, from the day she married him, everything she did was within his permission or acceptable range. However, she had to reveal the true relationship between him and Concubine Lian. As she had said, she couldn't wait for the day when Song Chengze would reveal it to her, and perhaps that day would never come. Many of her plans, especially those within the palace, required Concubine Lian's cooperation.

"Tell me what you said to Mother today."

Although Meng Qi didn't say every word perfectly, she still said quite a lot. At the end, Song Chengze kept staring at her, as if the words in her mouth had turned into words.

"You asked Zhang Decheng to tell me to come into the inner house earlier, just to confirm your speculation about the relationship between my mother and me, right?"

Meng Qi shook her head and said, "Of course not. But if it's true, it will make it easier for me to act in the palace and I'll be able to find out more information. If it's not what I think, I still have to find out the information. If anything happens, my mother might protect you for your sake. It's just a matter of effectiveness and time."

"So, you've gotten some information today?"

"Yes, there are two things I feel would be useful to His Majesty."

Seeing Meng Qi's serious look, Song Chengze simply crossed his legs on the kang and pointed across, "Sit down and talk slowly."

Meng Qi nodded and sat opposite. She took a sip of tea and told Song Chengze what Fanghua had told her about Yue Zhen.

"Although Princess Fanghua asked me to find a way to tell Zhou Yu, I thought I'd talk to the prince first. If the prince thinks it's okay to tell Zhou Yu, I'll have Mama Liu take the message back."
