Wang Chenghai walked to the window and saw that there was no one in the yard. He turned around and called out softly twice towards the west room. He heard a "meow" and a big white cat came into the room with its back bent.
Meng Qi stood up with a cry, "Did you bring it in?" she asked while squatting down.
"Yes, I was thinking that since no one has lived in this cold garden for a long time, there might be mice. Secondly, having this little creature can also entertain the princess. Don't worry, princess, Ah Hua was raised by me since she was a child, and she listens to me very much. Didn't you see that she didn't make any sound in the west room for the past half day?"
"Its name is Ahua?" Meng Qi touched the big cat, and the cat squinted its amber eyes and let Meng Qi touch it.
"Yes, as vulgar as a slave."
Meng Qi stood up. "Your name isn't tacky. You're quite thoughtful. We might need this cat in the future. But how did you get it in?"
Wang Chenghai chuckled, "Followed me to the palace gate, found a secluded place and released it. Ah Hua recognized my scent, so it found it on its own."
Meng Qi nodded again, feeling even more proud of her decision to reuse Wang Chenghai. He was a smart man.
"Tell me about what happened in the mansion yesterday."
"Yes." Wang Chenghai saw Meng Qi talking about business, put away the smile on his face, thought for a moment and said, "The news that the princess was confined to the palace was spread by the two female historians who escorted the young masters and young ladies back."
So soon? As they walked back, the Queen hadn't decided what to do with herself yet.
"Who said that?" Meng Qi asked coldly.
Wang Chenghai looked apologetic. "I don't know about this, but after the doctor we hired examined the Second Young Master, everyone knew about it."
"Is Ran-ge okay?"
"It's okay. I was afraid you'd worry, so I went to check it out before coming. Xiaoman was watching it with Mother Zhao, and it's not as swollen anymore."
Mother Zhao is Song Bairan's wet nurse.
"Xiaoman? What's going on?" Meng Qi was puzzled.
Wang Chenghai slapped his head and said, "I forgot to tell you. Last night, when the prince returned, he asked Madam Zhao to pack up the Second Young Master's things and go to Jing'an Garden. He said it was close to Bibo Hall, so it would be convenient for the prince to visit the Second Young Master."
What? What does Song Chengze mean by this? He's sending Song Bairan to his own yard. Is this temporary or permanent?
"This morning, Xiao Chunzi told me that a maid from Huamu Garden stayed at the gate of Bibo Hall until very late last night. However, the prince returned late, went to Jing'an Garden to visit the Second Young Master, and then went straight to the outer courtyard. When I left, I asked her to keep a close eye on Huamu Garden."
Meng Qi snorted coldly. This Xiao Lin family member had quite a few informants. Even though they were under house arrest and had people they had arranged to watch over them, they still managed to get the news so quickly and send people to block Song Chengze. What did this mean? It showed that the people they had arranged were not trustworthy.
Meng Qi sighed. That was true. Xiao Lin had been running the Rui Wang Mansion for so many years, and he had only been there for more than two months. How could he possibly let his servants work for him without any ulterior motives?
"Remember, after returning home, ask Xiao Chunzi to check on the situation of Xiao Lin's two maids."
Wang Chenghai understood Meng Qi's meaning after a moment's thought. He nodded and continued, "When I came here today, Concubine Li called me over and asked me to tell the princess that she was taking Concubine Wu to see Madam Hai to handle the matter you instructed her to do. As for the rest, it's nothing. The prince specifically instructed Eunuch Li to consult Madam Liu if he had any questions."
Meng Qi was stunned for a moment, then smiled, "He must be so angry that he'll die."
Wang Chenghai chuckled, "Princess, you didn't see his expression. He was as sullen as a pig's liver. He said that even if there was something that couldn't be resolved, he had to talk to Concubine Li. How could he possibly ask for instructions from a servant?"
"Concubine Li? Is he usually close to Concubine Li?"
Wang Chenghai shook his head, then nodded. "Li Mancang is a slippery man. He doesn't want to offend anyone, yet he looks down on everyone. He always flaunts his status as a prince. As for his relationship with Concubine Li, I really can't tell. You know, before you married into our family, my situation was far from good."
Meng Qi hummed, "Let's not talk about the things in the mansion. Let them make trouble for a month. Let's talk about what happened in Hanyuan."
When Wang Chenghai heard this, he straightened up with his eyes shining. He knew that the princess would not be confined here for no reason. There was indeed something behind it.
"Starting tomorrow, Yuandong, hold the two palace maids guarding the gate and delivering things in front, and you and I will go to the backyard and search each room one by one."
"Search, what are you searching for?" Wang Chenghai's eyes flashed with brilliance.
"I don't know what it is either. Let's slowly search for it. Just pay attention to anything that's different from what we usually see or that's suspicious."
Wang Chenghai nodded and said, "If we find something, how do we get it out? I said it would be something very big." After saying that, he gestured with his hands.
Meng Qi had never thought about this. She always thought that what Song Chengze asked her to find was a letter or a small keepsake. These were easy to deal with. She could just take them back when she went out.
But what if, as Wang Chenghai had said, they had found a suspicious large object? It wasn't impossible. After all, even Song Chengze didn't know what they were looking for. Prince Duan's repeated unexpected actions, coupled with Concubine Xiang's arrangements, had led them to some clues, but it wasn't certain whether they had what they were looking for.
"We'll talk about it when the time comes. We just have to be more careful."
Wang Chenghai nodded and said, "Let me go to the backyard first. I believe no one has been there for a long time. I'm afraid I can't even find the way there. Let me clean it up first to make it easier for the princess to walk."
Meng Qi increasingly felt that Wang Chenghai was a wonderful person. He could always grasp the key points of many things, and his ideas were very much in line with her wishes.
