Chapter 171 Past Events

Meng Qi blinked in confusion. Song Chengze's black gemstone eyes stared at her intently. Suddenly, Meng Qi seemed to have thought of something and covered her mouth in disbelief. "Yes, it's the late Empress Dowager?"

Song Chengze nodded.

"What about Jun Qing? Who is he?"

Song Chengze was silent at first, then said after a long pause, "You've heard that rumor, right? It was the rumor that came from the late Empress Dowager's family. Later, because of that rumor, my father killed her, and the bloody stench of Caishikou lingered for a month."

Meng Qi nodded, then said in surprise, "No, it can't be true? Then... those children's clothes, could it be?"

Song Chengze nodded, "Although Lan Xin is not sure, my mother and I think it should be like this."

Meng Qi felt like her brain wasn't enough. How could such a thing happen? A stepmother and an adopted son? A child?

"And Concubine Xiang should know about this matter."

"What? How did she know?" Meng Qi said in surprise.

"We don't know how she knew, when she knew, or how long she kept guarding, but she must have known. And my second brother knew too, which is why he went to the West Six Palaces to look for these physical evidences."

Meng Qi understood, so that's how it was, but what were these mother and daughter trying to do with this physical evidence?

"So, I want to take advantage of this and make my father believe that it was Xiang's idea to spread that rumor back then." Song Chengze looked up at the flower tree, his eyes filled with hatred.

"The reason why my mother was favored by my father was not because he was drunk and recognized the wrong person, but because Xiang family did it intentionally."

Meng Qi was completely upset. "What did you say? Then why..."

"Why does the Xiang family act like they want to eat my mother, spreading the rumor that it was my mother who climbed up the social ladder and slept with my father? Actually, this is the result of a feud between the Xiang family and the late Empress Jiang. They both took advantage of my mother. Poor mother, she was still eagerly waiting to return home when she was old enough. But she ended up becoming a pawn in their game."

Meng Qi listened to Song Chengze's slightly choked voice and suddenly understood everything.

She reached out and gently stroked Song Chengze's back. "You will succeed. You will make mother the one who has the last laugh. By then, whether it's the Xiang family, the Jiang family, or the current Gao family, they will all be defeated by mother. Don't worry, that day will come."

Song Chengze listened to Meng Qi's comforting words and felt her touch on his back. Even through the thick cloak, he actually felt the warmth.

Song Chengze turned around and gently took Meng Qi into his arms.

Meng Qi's body tensed up and she felt as stiff as a pole. She just stood there, not even knowing where to put her hands.

Through the cloak, she could smell the pleasant, light aroma of hay and the sound of Song Chengze's strong heartbeat. Meng Qi suddenly felt at peace, inexplicably at peace. She wanted to lean on this man's arms, rest for a while, close her eyes, and think of nothing, just to have someone to lean on.

Meng Qi thought so and did the same unconsciously.

Song Chengze hadn't expected to embrace Meng Qi, but he couldn't immediately push her away; that would only scare her. He could only gently embrace the little girl, like a spear. A pleasant, faint plum blossom scent wafted from her hair, as if she had been sweeping the snow from the white plum trees in the outer study, and that faint plum scent had been on her since.

It smells very good and makes people very intoxicated.

Song Chengze slowly felt the beauty in his arms seem to have recovered, no longer as stiff as before. He breathed a sigh of relief and laughed at himself. He was a prince, yet he was so cautious when hugging his own princess. He thought that not only in the palace, but also outside, as long as he, Song Chengze, wanted, any woman would throw herself into his arms.

But he never even glanced at those women, he just liked the blushing and heart-beating feeling he had just had.

After a long while, until Meng Qi yawned slightly, Song Chengze hurriedly let go of his hands. "Is it too cold? Blame me. Why am I telling you this outside? Let's go back."

Meng Qi supported Song Chengze's arm and stood up straight. "So, you want the emperor to find evidence that Concubine Xiang and her son framed the late Empress Dowager?"

Song Chengze supported Meng Qi and walked forward. "Yes, we should use those small clothes as well. Let the emperor think that Xiang family has been keeping them to threaten him."

"Is everything arranged properly? After all, this is the palace, so we must ensure that nothing goes wrong."

"Well, I've been making arrangements recently, so I thought of using you to attract Fourth Brother's attention. I want him to focus on dealing with me, which will be more conducive to my mother and I's arrangements in the palace."

Song Chengze thought for a moment, then loosened his grip on Meng Qi's arm and slid down to hold her hand through her sleeve. "I'm sorry for putting you through this."

Meng Qi hadn't recovered from Song Chengze's warm embrace just now, and now he held her hand again. Although it was through his sleeve, she could still feel the warmth. Hearing Song Chengze's words, she calmed down, "Your Highness, there's no need to say that. We agreed long ago that as long as I can help you, this little reputation doesn't matter. Besides, as I said just now, if we talk about this, I'm afraid your Highness will be the one who feels more wronged."

After Meng Qi finished speaking, she turned to look at him, with a sly and playful look in her eyes.

Song Chengze laughed, "I'm not wronged. Ever since I married you, my reputation has been just like that. What does this little thing mean?"

When Meng Qi heard this, she burst into laughter, and her curved eyes were brighter than the moonlight, causing Song Chengze to lose consciousness for a moment.

The two continued walking towards Jing'an Garden. Meng Qi asked softly, "How much do you need me to do?"
