Chapter 50: Scattering All the Wealth
"See me?" Ji Feng looked unconvinced.
"Yes. I've already completed the paperwork for her, and before she left she said she wanted to see you."
"Oh, that's really rare. I want to see what tricks she plays next." Ji Feng said, and looked at Jiang Bo. Jiang Bo nodded at him, indicating that it was okay for him to see it.
Ji Feng and the clerk walked out of Jiang Bo's office and saw Bo Qianqian standing at the door of the interrogation room.
"Ms. Bo, I heard you wanted to see me?"
"Yes." Bo Qianqian looked at Ji Feng with an unfathomable look.
"Please go ahead."
"Do you have time now? I want to invite you to go somewhere."
"Going somewhere? Where?" Ji Feng showed an incredible expression.
"Don't worry, it's not a messy place."
"Is there something you can't say here?"
"To be precise, I want to take you to see someone."
"Who are you meeting?"
"You'll know when you get there."
Ji Feng thought for a moment and thought he could squeeze out some time, so he agreed: "Okay, shall we go now?"
“As long as you have time.”
"Okay, let's go." With that, he and Bo Xixi went out together. Ji Feng drove his Passat and, under Bo Xixi's guidance, headed towards the outskirts of Lan Valley.
After about half an hour's drive, we arrived at a deep, serene bamboo forest, a network of thousands of lush bamboos. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting tiny golden specks on the bluestone slabs, like shattered stars.
Walking along the quiet bluestone path, a small blue-tiled building came into view in the center of the bamboo forest. On a wooden plaque, three large, unadorned characters in Weibei script read: Enyuan Hall.
White walls, green moss, eaves, and bronze bells are all nestled among the tall bamboos. Occasionally, a mountain breeze blows through, and the bells emit a crisp tinkle, which is then drowned out by the rustling whisper of the bamboo leaves.
Ji Feng looked at Bo Qianqian and asked, "Is it here?"
Bo Qianqian nodded, walked in front to lead the way, and Jifeng followed behind.
As she entered the room, a thin, middle-aged man in his fifties came out to greet her: "Ms. Bo, welcome."
Bo Qianqian smiled and pointed at Ji Feng and said to the middle-aged man, "This is Captain Ji of the Criminal Police Team."
Then he pointed at the middle-aged man and introduced him to Ji Feng: "This is my friend, Mr. Zhang Jiye."
After shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries with Mr. Zhang, Jifeng looked around. The small hall was clean and elegant. Four armchairs surrounded a table, emitting an amber glow rubbed by age. The wispy smoke from the incense burner had already stained the ink-and-wash landscape painting above with a faint yellowing. Huanghuali wood display cases filled the east and west walls, filled with a patchwork of Thuja cypress trees, some root carvings, some Buddha statues, some freehand, some intricately carved, interspersed with celadon vases and ancient bronze incense burners.
Following Mr. Zhang, we came to a small tea room by the window on the second floor. Mr. Zhang opened the door and said, "You guys chat first, I'll go make some tea." After saying that, he turned around and went downstairs with a "bang bang bang" sound.
The furnishings were simple and elegant. On the table, a withered lotus pod sat quietly in a celadon vase. Its brownish-yellow shell was etched with fine lines, and the shrunken stem seemed gaunt and frail, as if unable to support the massive seed shell. Bamboo shadows drifted slowly across the window paper, and the play of light and shadow filled the room with a faint green hue, as if the moonlight of the ancient Han and Tang dynasties sank into a deep well, cool and rich. Occasionally, a gentle breeze peeped through the gaps, seeping quietly through the bamboo, bringing a gentle, silent coolness. Clearly, this was a private teahouse, where the owner entertained distinguished guests.
"Ms. Bo, what are you talking about?" Ji Feng was confused.
"Don't worry, I'll tell you slowly." Bo Qianqian changed her calm expression in the interrogation room to a serene one.
"Let's start with Mr. Zhang. Mr. Zhang used to be an investor. Of course, he still is. It's just that the investment direction has been slightly adjusted. Before, it was in the financial field, but now, as you may have seen, it is mainly investment in Thuja sutchuenensis." Bo Qianqian spoke slowly.
Ji Feng had always been quite confident in his ability to judge people. His first meeting with Zhang Zong had given him a sense of kindness and generosity. The profound wisdom and breadth of knowledge revealed in his demeanor and conversation left a favorable impression on him.
"He previously accumulated some capital through financial investment. In recent years, Mr. Zhang has gradually withdrawn from the financial sector and is currently focusing on two things: charity and Thuja saburoki investment."
As he was speaking, a young and elegant waitress brought up a tea tray. A set of unique sky-blue tea sets exuded bursts of tea fragrance, and the small tea room was immediately filled with the aroma.
"Including the employees here, all of them are sponsored by Mr. Zhang. The recruitment regulations are that only children from poor families are recruited." After the waiter poured them the first cup of tea and quietly closed the door, Bo Qianqian continued.
"Oh. Mr. Zhang has a broad vision." Ji Feng complimented casually.
"That's right. Mr. Zhang's vision is truly beyond the comprehension of ordinary people."
"What do you mean?" Ji Feng was whetted by Bo Qianqian, and put aside his future purpose of coming here for the time being.
"It's simple, just four words: spend all my wealth. From my early financial gains and my current investments in thuja, I've only left a small portion for my wife and children, donating the rest. And I've demanded that the organizations or individuals receiving the donations not disclose any of my information to the public. This is also the most important prerequisite for Mr. Zhang to agree to the donation."
"In that case, how did you know?"
Bo Qianqian took a sip of tea and made an inviting gesture with her slender, bony hand, indicating that Jifeng should have a taste of the tea. "Your question is exactly the opportunity for me to get to know Mr. Zhang."
"I met Mr. Zhang at the Provincial Charity Federation. Coincidentally, I'm related to someone Mr. Zhang supports, so I'm aware of his philanthropic efforts."
"Are you also involved in charity donations?" The funding that Ji Feng mentioned to Bo Qianqian was obviously more attractive than the cup of tea in front of him.
"That's right. I have basically completed the donation." There should have been determination in Bo Qianqian's eyes, but Ji Feng saw indifference.
Without waiting for Ji Feng to ask, Bo Qianqian continued, "I have already signed the donation agreement. This means that the Thuja thuja warehouse now belongs to Mr. Zhang."
Ji Feng nearly fell off his chair when he heard this. He opened his eyes wide in shock and was speechless. After a long while, he said, "Jiubai warehouse? Are you saying that you have donated the entire warehouse?"
"To be precise, it was cashed out through Mr. Zhang. The proceeds were divided into several parts and donated to those in need. By the way, when Shen Zhaoran acquired the cliff cypress, he borrowed money from me and never returned it. Therefore, only a small part of it belongs to me."
Ji Feng gradually recovered and asked again in disbelief, "You mean you donated all the Thuja trees in that warehouse and only kept a small portion for yourself? And Mr. Zhang simply used his connections to sell them, and donated all the proceeds as charity?"
"You have summarized it very well." His tone was still as calm as water.
Ji Feng leaned back in his chair, his head in his hands. He finally understood why, during the interrogation, when he'd said he was going to take away all the Thuja juniper trees in the warehouse, Bo Qianqian had seemed quite shocked. He'd only been trying to "scare" her.
"Can you tell me why?"
"First, let me explain why I asked you to come here. It's to get a witness. Donating such a large sum of money is not enough with just words. I'll ask Mr. Zhang to come up in a moment, and he'll personally confirm what I said."
I understand. Ji Feng breathed a sigh of relief, and there was an indescribable complex emotion in his heart. He was a little confused.
"To answer your question," Bo Xixi paused for a moment and said, "I don't want Shen Zhaoran's dirty money, not a single cent."
"Is it over?" Ji Feng asked.
"It's over."
"Is it that simple?"
Bo Qianqian nodded without saying anything.
Ji Feng's heart was shaken again, and he actually had a strange feeling towards the woman in front of him.
He picked up the cup of tea in front of him, lowered his head, sniffed the elegant tea fragrance, and fell into deep thought.
There was a soft knock on the door, and Mr. Zhang appeared at the door with a stack of documents that looked like agreements in his hand.
After Mr. Zhang came in and sat down, he said to Bo Qianqian, "Ms. Bo, have you told Captain Ji everything?"
"Yeah." Bo Qianqian nodded slightly.
Mr. Zhang placed the stack of paperwork in front of Ji Feng and said, "Captain Ji, I don't know why Ms. Bo asked you to come here, nor do I know why she told you about her charitable donation. I just want to say that she is a very kind and magnanimous person. She deserves to be cherished by everyone who knows her."
"Mr. Zhang, you're too kind. You have a much broader vision than me." Bo Qianqian said modestly.
Ji Feng picked up the stack of documents before him. It was a three-party donation agreement. Bo Qianqian, Zhang Jiye, and the Haidai Charity Federation, representing the donor, recipient, and ultimate beneficiary, respectively, signed and stamped the agreement. The bright red seal of the Haidai Charity Federation stood out prominently. Furthermore, the terms regarding the donation target and purpose were clearly documented, clearly confirming Bo Qianqian's donation.
Ji Feng slowly put down the agreement, feeling a mixture of emotions, not knowing where to begin. At this moment, Xin Xiao's call eased his awkwardness. He picked up the phone, opened the door, and walked out to the corridor, leaving Mr. Zhang and Bo Qianqian in the tea room.
"Brother Feng, there is a major discovery."
"Tell me, what did you find?"
"Xiangdong and I took a quick look at Chen Zhou's workbook on the way. The word 'Xixi' appeared many times in it. I am almost certain that Bo Xixi is Chen Zhou's girlfriend." Xin Xiao didn't know that Bo Xixi had already admitted this fact.
"Anything else?"
"Yes. Judging from Chen Zhou's records, he really loved Bo Xixi very much. There is a passage that can prove it. I will read it to you: 'Xixi, no one can stop me from loving you, including my biological parents!'"
"The important thing is, it seems that Chen Zhou didn't even tell Bo Xixi that he was sick. Of course, he couldn't tell her about his undercover work, but why didn't he even tell her that he was sick? I feel like there seems to be a misunderstanding between them. How about this, Brother Feng, I will take a photo of the key pages of the diary and send it to you. You can take a look for yourself. Xiangdong and I are about to get off the car."
"Okay, it's not convenient to talk outside right now. We'll talk in detail when you come back." Ji Feng originally wanted to tell Xin Xiao about the progress of the case, but Bo Qianqian was in the next room, so some things were not convenient to say openly.
Back in the tea room, Mr. Zhang was talking to Bo Qianqian. When Jifeng came in, they stopped talking. Mr. Zhang stood up and said to them calmly, "Take your time to chat. If you need anything, just call me." After that, he carefully closed the door and went downstairs.
