Gao Mingcheng was somewhat surprised to see Zhao Bin and asked, "You actually came too?"
"I came to visit the former principal. I was just next door when I heard you were here, so I came to see you. I guess I came uninvited," Zhao Bin said, giving Fu Hong an embarrassed smile.
Fu Hong quickly said, "I'm so glad Captain Zhao came. Please have a seat."
Since he was already there, Zhao Bin sat down without ceremony, and of course, he didn't forget to give the remaining gift money.
Fu Hong wanted to decline, but Gao Mingcheng stopped her: "No need to be polite with him, he doesn't need that little bit."
Fu Hong reluctantly accepted it.
"I didn't expect you to come to see the old principal." Gao Mingcheng said to Zhao Bin with surprise.
“I didn’t know before, but now that I do, of course I had to come and see.” Zhao Bin said, casually peeling a candy. Seeing the little girl in Xing Zhaozhao’s arms staring at the bright red candy in his hand with her big, dark eyes, he couldn’t resist playing with her and started teasing her.
Little Hongling watched as the beautiful candy was brought to her lips. She tried to open her mouth to eat it several times, but missed each time. Her eyes instantly filled with tears, and she nestled in her mother's arms, crying in distress.
Xing Zhaozhao and Gao Mingcheng glared at each other. How old are you, still lying to little girls?
Zhao Bin chuckled sheepishly, popped the candy into his mouth, looked at Gao Mingcheng with a teasing expression, and said, "If I hadn't seen your two boys at the old principal's place, I wouldn't have known that your family had that kind of connection with the old principal. No wonder..."
He was implying something.
Gao Mingcheng knew that he probably already knew, and asked, "Didn't Liu Feiyue say anything?"
Zhao Bin scoffed, "He's just a grasshopper in my hand now. What do you think he dares to say?"
"Thanks," Gao Mingcheng said.
Zhao Bin waved his hand dismissively: "Why are you being so polite with me?"
"Is the case closed?" Gao Mingcheng asked.
"That's about it," Zhao Bin said.
"What will be the sentences for those few?" Gao Mingcheng asked.
"What else can we do? This, I guess." Zhao Bin made a gun gesture.
"Dong Cang too?" Xing Zhaozhao asked curiously.
"He was lucky; he was an accomplice and escaped punishment, but he probably won't get out for at least eight or ten years," Zhao Bin said.
Xing Zhaozhao looked worriedly at Fu Hong, who was greeting guests everywhere: "Won't the Dong family's sky fall down?" Given the Dong couple's nature, they probably won't behave themselves.
Sure enough, what we feared came true. Just before the lunch was about to start, Mr. and Mrs. Dong came to the door crying. On such a joyous day, they acted like they were in mourning, standing at the door the whole time.
Xing Zhaozhao only realized after hearing that Dong Cui had heard the news that Dong Cang had been sentenced to ten years in prison. Knowing that her parents, who had always favored sons over daughters, would not have a son to rely on, she, as their daughter, would probably not have an easy life at home in the future. So she found a husband, accepted the betrothal gifts, and married him off in just a few days. Before leaving, she even took all the money the couple had saved for their funerals over the years.
Mr. and Mrs. Dong refused to give up and went to the house. Unexpectedly, the family had many sons, and several fierce-looking burly men stood at the door. The two cowards were so frightened that they didn't dare to utter a sound and slunk back home.
All their hopes were dashed, so they had no choice but to swallow their pride and come to their eldest son, who had already separated from the family, hoping to bring him and his new wife back to serve them.
Dong Cheng went out to meet them, looking sickly and like a consumptive. He said he could go back, but the wedding was off, and the promised retirement money was gone. He would do nothing more than stay at home and let them support him.
Mr. and Mrs. Dong were displeased. They had come to rely on someone, not to be a burden.
Zhao Bin then added fuel to the fire, saying, "Since you love your youngest son so much, why don't we send you to keep him company?"
Mr. and Mrs. Dong immediately ran away as if fleeing, but their legs were too weak to run fast, and they even punched each other a couple of times.
"If they want to come again, they should come to the Public Security Brigade to find me," Zhao Bin told the newlywed couple.
Fu Hong and Dong Cheng were naturally extremely grateful.
Although there was a minor mishap and Dong's parents caused a scene, Fu Hong and Dong Cheng's wedding still went smoothly.
After the meal, as Zhao Bin was leaving, he remembered something and reminded Gao Mingcheng, saying, "By the way, I've already reported the matter of that ancient tomb. People from above should be coming down to investigate soon, and I'm sure we'll have to trouble you then."
Just as Zhao Bin had said, a few days later, Captain Gao came to our door with several well-mannered, expert-looking strangers: "Mingcheng, these are comrades from some research institute in the city. They say you found an ancient tomb in the mountains and would like you to take them in to have a look. Is that true?"
Gao Mingcheng nodded: "It's true, Captain."
Captain Gao couldn't help but rub his hands together excitedly: "I never expected that such a treasure was hidden in our mountains. We never discovered it before. Thanks to you, Mingcheng."
"Actually, it was my Zhaozhao who discovered it first," Gao Mingcheng said.
"You two are both excellent," Captain Gao said with a broad smile. These are real achievements, given how well you handled these matters.
The man who came down from the city was an elderly professor in his sixties, accompanied by several of his students. He looked at Gao Mingcheng and Xing Zhaozhao with a gleam in his eyes and said, "We'll have to trouble you to take us on a trip into the mountains."
"You're too kind, it's my pleasure," Gao Mingcheng said, and after making some preparations, he immediately led them into the mountains.
The old professor and his group arrived early in the morning. Perhaps due to the old man's health, by the time they came out of the mountains, a whole day had passed and it was almost dark. The old professor was leaning on Gao Mingcheng's back and could barely walk. His students were also swaying from side to side, but they still couldn't suppress the excitement on their faces.
They rested at Xing Zhaozhao's house for a while, had dinner, and were then sent away by Gao Mingcheng.
At the dinner table, the old professor kept talking about the major discovery: "If I'm not mistaken, it should be a Han Dynasty tomb, it's incredible..."
Two days after the old professor left, the nearby troops arrived first, led by Gao Mingcheng. The higher-ups had decided to excavate the Han tomb. Because it was deep in the mountains, and considering the safety of the staff, the troops were sent to do the clearing work first.
Not long after, city officials came again, led by the same old professor.
Then another group of staff arrived, supposedly from the province.
One day, Xing Zhaozhao heard a knock on the door. When she opened it, she saw Professor Yang standing outside with a smile on his face.
"It's been a long time, Zhao Zhao," Professor Yang said with a smile.
