The lights were still on in the duty room of the public security brigade.
Zhou Haomin, the young man who used to follow Zhao Bin, was bored, so he put his legs up on the table and rocked the chair under his buttocks, making it creak.
"That captain is really something. I don't know where he's gone. I haven't seen a single person all afternoon. He even forgot that he was supposed to be on duty tonight. He should at least have told us in advance so we would have known and could have covered for him. Luckily, that old bastard Lin Guohua is often nowhere to be seen either. If he had caught him, I don't know what strange things he would have said. He's always been eyeing the captain's position and wants to get rid of the 'deputy' title in front of him." He muttered to Wei Junjie, another security guard on duty next to him.
Wei Junjie casually played with the cards in his hand and said, "Didn't someone come looking for the captain at noon? They seemed to be quite close. He probably got drunk again. Anyway, there's nothing important today. That old bastard Lin Guohua is still hanging around with the black market and taking bribes from them."
Zhou Haomin rolled his eyes at Wei Junjie: "How can that be the same? Lin Guohua's older brother is the director of the Revolutionary Committee."
Wei Junjie snorted coldly: "He's got dirty hands. Don't think that he's the director of the Revolutionary Committee. Even if he's the Emperor himself, I'll wait and see how he dies one day."
Zhou Haomin was startled by Wei Junjie's words and was about to tell him to say less, lest the walls have ears, when the tightly closed door of the duty room was suddenly pushed open with a "bang." A pot-bellied, round-faced old man with small eyes walked in. He was Lin Guohua, the deputy captain of their security brigade. Behind him was a guy with a sly face named Chi Shi, who was also a security team member.
Zhou Haomin and Wei Junjie's expressions both changed, and they began to feel uneasy. That said, having an older brother who was the director of the Revolutionary Committee meant that dealing with them, these lowly security guards, would be far too easy.
Lin Guohua, hands behind his back, looking every bit the old cadre, asked, "What are you talking about, death? Who died?"
Zhou Haomin and Wei Junjie exchanged a glance and both breathed a sigh of relief. Thank goodness, he hadn't heard.
"You're saying my dog is a dog I've had for several years, Deputy Captain Lin?" Wei Junjie said with a smile.
Lin Guohua frowned. The word "deputy" was the thing he hated most in his life.
Lin Guohua snorted coldly: "I thought it was Zhao Bin. He was supposed to be on duty today, but he was nowhere to be seen. As the captain of the public security brigade, he has no sense of responsibility whatsoever. Does he deserve to continue sitting in the captain's position?"
"Captain Lin is right," Chi Shi said with a fawning smile and nodding repeatedly.
Upon hearing the words "Captain Lin," Lin Guohua's chubby face broke into a wide smile.
Zhou Haomin secretly rolled his eyes at Chi Shi, then explained to Lin Guohua, "The captain is investigating a very important matter, which is why he couldn't come."
"What important thing is it?" Lin Guohua asked.
"The captain didn't say. You can ask Deputy Captain Lin when the captain comes back." Zhou Haomin directly shifted the focus to Zhao Bin, so that Zhao Bin wouldn't be unable to explain himself when he returned.
“Then I’ll wait for him to come back and see how he explains himself. If he can’t explain it clearly, he can forget about being the captain of the public security brigade.” After saying that, Lin Guohua was about to turn around and go back to discuss with his brother how to take advantage of this opportunity to snatch the position of captain of the public security brigade.
Just then, a person rushed over from outside: "Is this the Public Security Brigade? Hurry, we've been robbed!"
Lin Guohua's expression hardened: "I am Lin Guohua, the captain of the Public Security Brigade. Tell me, where was the thief?"
"It's at Old Man Fu's house on Dacheng Street," the man said.
Lin Guohua frowned: "Deputy?" Why is it deputy again?
The man nodded: "Yes, what's wrong?"
Lin Guohua shook his head and said, "It's nothing. You lead the way quickly. I will catch that petty thief as soon as possible and ensure that the safety of people's property is not threatened in any way."
The man was moved to tears: "Then I'll leave it to you, Captain Lin." If they couldn't catch that thief as soon as possible, everyone on the street would be living in constant fear.
Lin Guohua's ears rang when he heard the words "Captain Lin," and he waved his hand smugly, saying, "No problem, no problem."
Zhou Haomin and Wei Junjie couldn't help but look away. They simply couldn't bear to watch. Although Lin Guohua had taken the lead, they had gone along anyway, since it was their shift today. If anything went wrong, Lin Guohua could just wash his hands of it, while they would be the ones to take the blame, and it might even implicate Zhao Bin, who wasn't on duty today.
When Lin Guohua and his group arrived at Dacheng Street, there were many onlookers gathered in front of the Fu family's house. Even though it was late, it couldn't dampen their excitement.
Grandma Fu was sitting in the yard, slapping her thigh and crying, "Those two gold bracelets were passed down from my husband's ancestors. When they came to me, all that was left were my two granddaughters. I was planning to give one to each of them as part of their dowry, but now they're all gone. Which heartless bastard stole them from us when we only had that little bit of wealth left? I curse him to have sons without an anus."
“I didn’t expect your Fu family to have some wealth. Do you need a grandson-in-law? My nephew from my mother’s side isn’t married yet, so how about…” an older woman in the crowd said.
Grandma Fu looked over at the sound and spat at him: "Get lost! Everyone knows your nephew likes to drink and beat people. He's already ruined two wives. He still wants to harm others. Shameless! My two granddaughters are already taken. You don't need to bother with them. Get as far away from me as possible."
"Pah, your family only has two granddaughters left, and you're about to die out. You still have the nerve to look down on my nephew. You deserve to have your house robbed."
"What did you say?" Grandma Fu was furious. She rolled up her sleeves and was about to rush out to beat someone up.
Seeing that things were going badly, the older woman quickly made her escape under the cover of night. Grandma Fu couldn't stop in time and bumped right into Lin Guohua, who was coming from the same direction.
Caught off guard, Lin Guohua was knocked backward and staggered.
Zhou Haomin and Wei Junjie realized things were going badly and quickly moved away.
Chi Shi, who had been following closely behind, couldn't see what was happening ahead. He bumped into Lin Guohua and they both fell to the ground. Chi Shi was the one who was crushed, and he was in so much pain that he grimaced.
People nearby quickly went over and helped the person up.
"Excuse me, may I ask who you are...?" Grandma Fu apologized to Lin Guohua and asked.
"He is the deputy captain of our public security brigade," Zhou Haomin introduced to Grandma Fu.
"You've finally arrived." Grandma Fu excitedly grabbed Lin Guohua's hand. "Captain Fu, I never knew you also had the surname Fu. Maybe we were even family 800 years ago. You must stand up for us and help us catch that little thief."
Lin Guohua: "..." He would hate the word "deputy" for the rest of his life.
In front of others, he couldn't show any displeasure, so he coughed lightly and said, "Take me to see the scene first."
"Okay, Captain Fu, come with me." Grandma Fu said, turning around and hurriedly going into the house.
Lin Guohua's temple twitched. Did she really have to include the word "deputy" in it?
Zhou Haomin and Wei Junjie covered their mouths and chuckled as they followed Lin Guohua into the Fu family home.
