As soon as they came out of the textile factory, Gao Lianzhou grabbed Ying Rongrong's hand and said, "Grandma, I'm hungry."
Xing Zhaozhao only belatedly realized that she hadn't eaten yet. When she checked the time, she was shocked to find it was already afternoon. Thinking of her two little ones waiting anxiously for her to return home, she immediately became worried: "Oh no, it's already this late? My two little ones at home have been waiting for me to come home for so long, they must be so anxious."
I had told them before that I would try my best to go back before mealtime every time I came, but I didn't expect to go to Qingxi Town this time and be delayed.
"It's alright, we've already been delayed anyway. Let's eat first and then head back. We can bring some good food back to appease them," Gao Mingcheng said.
"What should I bring? Your two sons are shrewd, especially the younger one, he's not easy to please," Xing Zhaozhao said with a headache.
"Uh..." Gao Mingcheng stammered. He hadn't taken care of children for many years and didn't know what kids liked these days.
He looked at Gao Hongfei questioningly. Surely he knew what he liked.
"..." Gao Hongfei hesitated. Having not been a child for many years, he could hardly remember what he used to like.
After holding it in for a while, he looked at Xing Zhaozhao and uttered a single word with some uncertainty: "Meat?"
Xing Zhaozhao shook her head: "We have plenty of meat at home now, and we're tired of cakes."
Gao Lianzhou suddenly raised her hand excitedly: "I know."
Several elderly people turned their heads to look at the same time.
Gao Lianzhou pointed to the white-bearded grandpa on the red sign across the street: "Of course, kids like Grandpa K the most."
Xing Zhaozhao looked in the direction Gao Lianzhou was pointing: "Grandpa K? What's that?"
Gao Mingcheng disagreed, frowned, and shook his head: "No, that's junk food. It's not good for children to eat too much of it."
"Garbage?" Xing Zhaozhao looked at Gao Lianzhou in confusion. "Do kids these days like to eat garbage?"
"It's not garbage, it's fried chicken, it smells amazing!" Gao Lianzhou argued, swallowing hard as she finished speaking.
Ying Rongrong gently patted his head: "I think you just wanted to eat it yourself."
Gao Lianzhou held Ying Rongrong's hand and looked at her expectantly: "It's okay to eat it once in a while, Grandma."
Seeing Gao Lianzhou's eager expression, Xing Zhaozhao suddenly felt a little hungry too: "Then... how about we go take a look?"
Gao Lianzhou immediately cheered, "I knew it! Fairy Sister is the best!"
"Let's go." The grandfather and grandson ran off hand in hand.
The others had no choice but to follow.
It was Xing Zhaozhao's first time eating fried chicken, and it was indeed quite delicious, but it was easy to get tired of eating too much. Seeing how happily Gao Lianzhou was eating, she guessed that the two little ones at home would like it, so when she finished eating, she specially took two family buckets home.
When they returned to the cellar, it was quiet. Usually, if they came back late, the two little ones would be waiting there impatiently. But today, they didn't see a soul in sight.
Xing Zhaozhao's heart skipped a beat, and she couldn't help but worry. Could something have happened?
She hurriedly left the cellar and went into the house in front.
As she walked along, everything was quiet, as if no one was home. Xing Zhaozhao's heart sank, and she quickened her pace.
Just as they reached the front yard, Black General, who had recovered from his injuries and was now lively and energetic again, darted out of the house. He must have heard the commotion, but when he saw that it was Xing Zhaozhao returning, the wariness in his eyes quickly disappeared, and he trotted over to greet her, whimpering.
Perhaps drawn by the scent wafting from the bag she was carrying, the puppy impatiently started circling around her feet and barking.
Hearing the noise outside, someone quickly ran out of the house; it was Fu Lan.
When Fu Lan saw that it was Xing Zhaozhao who had returned, she immediately breathed a long sigh of relief and went to greet her: "Sister Xing, you're finally back! Why are you so late this time?"
"Something came up and I was held up," Xing Zhaozhao said, then asked, "Where are the two little ones?"
“She’s lying inside,” Fu Lan said.
"Taking a nap?" Xing Zhaozhao asked. She's being unusually well-behaved today?
Fu Lan shook her head and smiled helplessly: "He's throwing a tantrum. He waited for you for a long time and didn't see you come back. He felt that you didn't keep your word and was worried that you would abandon them and not come back. He didn't even eat and went to lie down on the kang."
"They haven't even eaten?" Xing Zhaozhao frowned, picked up her things, and hurried into the house.
Just as she reached the door of the inner room and was about to push it open, she suddenly heard a series of clear footsteps running away from the doorway. Xing Zhaozhao paused involuntarily.
After hesitating for a moment, she still pushed open the door and went in. She saw the three little ones lying on the kang (a heated brick bed), all motionless. However, except for Little Hongling, whose little belly was rising and falling rhythmically, clearly indicating that she was sleeping soundly, the other two little ones were completely still, with only their eyeballs twitching under their eyelids.
Xing Zhaozhao raised an eyebrow slightly. "Heh, she's putting on quite a show."
"Sigh, since they're all asleep, the delicious food I bought this time will have to be eaten with Fu Lan and General Hei, so it won't get cold and spoil." Xing Zhaozhao pretended not to know anything, saying regretfully as she lifted the lid of the family bucket, letting the fragrant aroma waft out.
The two little ones sniffed in unison, then swallowed hard, but stubbornly refused to open their eyes.
They're quite patient; she'll see how long they can endure it.
Xing Zhaozhao smiled silently, turned around and walked out: "Xiao Lan, I brought back some delicious food this time, let's eat together."
"It smells so good! What's delicious?" Fu Lan asked curiously, without suspecting anything.
"Fried chicken," Xing Zhaozhao said.
"Aren't Dafei and Xiaoyu Mao going out to eat together?" Fu Lan asked.
"Never mind, I'm asleep," Xing Zhaozhao said.
"Are they really asleep?" Fu Lan asked in surprise. "Should we leave some for them?"
"No need, it won't taste good when it's cold. They're just unlucky," Xing Zhaozhao said.
On the kang (heated brick bed), Hongyu's belly was already rumbling with desire. Finally, unable to contain himself any longer, he jumped up and ran out.
Hongfei quickly followed.
Once inside the main room, the fragrant aroma became even stronger. Xing Zhaozhao and Fu Lan each had a piece and were already eating. Even General Hei had a piece and was happily munching on it under the table.
Hongyu kept swallowing, her eyes welling up with tears of grievance: "Mom, you're going too far! You're eating all by yourself."
Xing Zhaozhao turned her head and looked over: "Oh, you finally woke up."
Hongyu's mouth was practically watering. He ran up to Xing Zhaozhao, stood on tiptoe, took a bite of what she was holding, and his eyes immediately lit up.
He reached into the bucket, grabbed a piece, gave it to his brother first, and then grabbed another piece for himself.
Not bad, at least you know to give it to your brother first.
