Gao Hongfei took Ying Rongrong's phone and knocked on Gao Mingcheng's door.
Gao Mingcheng was sitting in the room, looking repeatedly at the new photos he had just gotten from Xing Zhaozhao. When Gao Hongfei suddenly knocked on the door and came in, he was a little unhappy and asked, "What is it?"
Gao Hongfei handed his phone to him: "It's my uncle on the phone."
When Gao Mingcheng looked at the caller ID, he realized it was Wen Sinan's number.
He casually took it: "Hello?"
“It’s me,” Xing Zhaoming said.
"How did you get Lao Wen's phone number?" Gao Mingcheng asked.
Xing Zhaoming: "..." Do I really have to ask them all?
He had no choice but to patiently explain the whole story to Gao Mingcheng, and then asked directly, "What exactly happened with that photo? Why are Zhaozhao and the two little ones in it? Don't tell me you don't know, I don't believe you."
When Chen Wei heard Xing Zhaozhao's name, her face turned pale instantly, and her heart almost jumped out of her throat.
When Wen Sinan noticed that Chen Wei's expression suddenly changed, she narrowed her eyes slightly.
Chen Wei noticed Wen Sinan's gaze and tried her best to appear calm, even returning a smile, but she couldn't fool Wen Sinan at all.
"What else could it be? Zhao Zhao just took a picture with the children, what's the big deal?" Gao Mingcheng said casually.
Xing Zhaoming frowned and said, "What nonsense are you talking about? How is that possible? Just look at the scars on your face in that photo. It was clearly taken after the fighting on the front lines ended. At that time, Zhaozhao and the two younger Mingmings were already..."
“Why is it impossible? Haven’t you already met her before?” Gao Mingcheng said in a deep voice.
Xing Zhaoming opened his mouth, instinctively wanting to refute, but then a familiar face he had seen before flashed through his mind, and his expression changed instantly. It felt as if something was blocking his throat, and after a long while, he managed to utter four words in a hoarse voice: "That's impossible."
"Believe it or not, it's up to you." After saying that, Gao Mingcheng hung up the phone without saying anything more.
Xing Zhaoming remained frozen in the position of answering the phone, not reacting for a long time.
Chen Wei stared at him nervously for a while, then walked over, gently tugged at his sleeve, and called out, "Zhaoming?"
Xing Zhaoming snapped out of his daze, looked at Chen Wei anxiously, and said, "I have to go back to Lanyuan right away. You can go back by yourself, or call Jiashu to come and pick you up." After saying that, he turned to leave.
Wen Sinan realized something was wrong and quickly stopped the person: "Wait a minute, give me back my phone first."
Xing Zhaoming paused, realizing that Wen Sinan's phone was still in his hand. He tossed it back and hurriedly left.
Standing there alone, Chen Wei trembled uncontrollably at the thought that Xing Zhaoming's trip to Lanyuan meant her secrets might no longer be out in the open. Why? Why did she have to come back and disrupt her life when she was already dead?
If Wen Sinan had previously thought Chen Wei only had some psychological issues, now seeing her unusual expression, she felt something was really wrong.
"Are you alright?" she asked.
Chen Wei shook her head and turned to leave, but unexpectedly, everything went black and she collapsed to the ground.
Wen Sinan quickly went over and helped the person up, then called a nurse in to help. By the time she had freed her hands and chased after Xing Zhaoming to call him back, the person had already disappeared. She had no choice but to call Xing Zhaoming instead, but the phone rang from Chen Wei's bag. He had left his phone with Chen Wei and probably couldn't contact her for the time being. In the end, she had no choice but to contact their son.
After hanging up on Xing Zhaoming, Gao Mingcheng returned the phone to Gao Hongfei.
Gao Hongfei answered the phone but didn't leave immediately.
"Dad, did Uncle not know about Mom's situation?" he asked Gao Mingcheng.
"Mm." Gao Mingcheng nodded.
"Why didn't Mom tell Uncle? Didn't she meet Uncle before when she was in Beijing?" Gao Hongfei asked.
Gao Mingcheng pondered for a moment, looked at Gao Hongfei seriously, and asked, "When you were having a hard time at home, did your mother ever mention contacting your aunt?"
Gao Hongfei shook his head subconsciously, but then he quickly realized something, his pupils contracted, and his hands, hanging at his sides, clenched involuntarily. He said in a sorrowful voice, "When Xiao Hongling passed away, Mom was depressed at home for a while. One day, she suddenly ran away to town without Grandma's knowledge. When she came back, Grandma scolded her, but she didn't care. That night, she held me and Xiao Yumo and told us to hang in there, that we wouldn't have to live such a hard life anymore. After that, every time the postman came, she would run over to ask if there was any mail for her. She would also go to the village entrance to wait from time to time. I always thought she was waiting for you to come back, until half a year later, when Xiao Yumo also had an accident. It was as if she had completely died..."
Gao Hongfei's eyes were red as he glared angrily at Gao Mingcheng and asked, "So, Mom asked Auntie for help, but she ignored her, right?"
Gao Mingcheng remained silent, which was taken as tacit agreement.
Gao Hongfei couldn't help but growl in a low voice, "Why didn't she tell? She even kept it from me, and from my uncle too..."
“She feels guilty for not taking good care of you all. She was too weak and placed her hopes on others. They have no obligation to help her,” Gao Mingcheng said.
Gao Hongfei shook his head painfully and said, "But we are family..."
“You’re wrong. She’s just your uncle’s wife, nothing more,” Gao Mingcheng said.
Gao Hongfei shook his head again: "I still can't accept it."
Gao Mingcheng patted his son's arm reassuringly: "Your mother said she doesn't blame her, but she won't accept her again. However, she is, after all, your uncle's lover. Your mother didn't want to put your uncle in a difficult position, so she chose to keep it from him."
Gao Hongfei looked at Gao Mingcheng in confusion: "Then why did you... tell your uncle?"
Gao Mingcheng smiled coldly and said, "Your mother said she doesn't blame her, but I didn't say I don't blame her. When she married your uncle, she knew that your uncle had a sister. She knew how much your uncle cared about his sister, but she still chose to stand by and do nothing. If you dare to do something, you have to be brave enough to do it. Husbands and wives should be more honest with each other. She didn't want to be honest, so I'll be honest for her."
As he spoke, a cold glint flashed in Gao Mingcheng's eyes: "And your uncle too, he always says that your mother has become estranged from him since she got married. He still needs to know what kind of person the person who has spent most of his life with him really is, and what he has been secretly doing behind his back." That's right, he even blamed Xing Zhaoming.
