Chapter 15: Caught Red-Handed

The old man thought for a moment, then nodded: "Oh, I know, why?"

"Do you know where all the people there have moved to?" Xing Zhaozhao asked. "We used to have relatives there, but we haven't visited them for many years. We went there recently and found that the village is gone."

The old man shook his head: "That would be hard to find. There were no resettlement houses built back then, so we don't know where they would move to."

Xing Zhaozhao said with a regretful expression, "Oh, I see. Thank you, sir."

After saying that, she bid farewell to the old man: "It's getting late, I'll head back now, see you next time."

Then, I picked up my things and left.

As the old man watched Xing Zhaozhao leave, he suddenly remembered, "Oh, right, it seems that General Manager Gao of Zhaohong is from Xiaogaozhuang."

However, there's no point in telling her anyway, since she has no chance of seeing President Gao.

The old man quickly gave up on the idea.

Xing Zhaozhao carried the large and small bags back to the cellar. As she passed through the door, she was still thinking about how to explain the origin of these things to the two children.

Her two little ones, though young, are very clever and not easily fooled.

She never expected that, as soon as she stepped through the door, she would suddenly meet a pair of dark, round eyes.

Hongyu had somehow arrived in the cellar and was sitting cross-legged on the ground facing her, his small face tilted up as he stared at her intently.

Xing Zhaozhao's head suddenly went blank.

How did Little Feather end up here?

Oh no, we're about to be exposed.

How could she explain to him that her mother, who was supposed to be on the mountain, had suddenly appeared in the cellar out of nowhere?

Xing Zhaozhao felt her head was throbbing and she could barely think straight.

When Hongyu saw Xing Zhaozhao, her eyes quickly welled up with tears, and she burst into tears. She rushed over and hugged Xing Zhaozhao's leg tightly: "Mom, you're finally back! I've been waiting here for so long. I thought you didn't want me, my brother, and my sister anymore, and that you would never come back."

Xing Zhaozhao: "..."

This pose looks kind of familiar...

However, she didn't have time to think too much at the moment. She threw the things in her hand on the ground, hugged her youngest son who was crying miserably, patted his little back, and comforted him: "How could that be? You and your brother and sister are all Mommy's children. Mommy will never leave her children."

Hongyu couldn't stop, as if she wanted to vent all the fear that had been building up in her heart. She hugged Xing Zhaozhao and cried for a long time before finally stopping, sobbing.

Hongfei had been staying inside with his younger sister, but when he heard the noise from the cellar, he rushed over. Seeing Xing Zhaozhao, his eyes immediately welled up with tears, and he rushed towards her, crying, "Mom..."

Xing Zhaozhao reached out and hugged her eldest son as well: "It's okay, it's okay, Mom's back now..."

After the two children had stopped crying and calmed down, she asked them, "How did you know I was here?"

Hongyu raised his hand, sniffed his red nose, and said, "When I came back after digging up earthworms, I saw you in the backyard, so I followed you. But when I saw you disappear into that wall, I thought you had been captured by a monster and would never come back. It scared me to death."

Xing Zhaozhao: "..."

It was her oversight.

"Little Feather still wants to go find Grandma Hao and rescue you, Mom, from the monster," Hongfei said.

Xing Zhaozhao broke out in a cold sweat, looking at the two little ones with a serious expression, and said, "You must never let anyone know that Mommy disappeared into the wall, otherwise they will think Mommy is a monster and kidnap her, understand?"

Hongyu's face turned pale with fright, and she gripped Xing Zhaozhao's hand tightly: "Then will you put a tall hat on Mommy and parade her through the streets?"

Xing Zhaozhao: "..."

That saved her the trouble of explaining.

Xing Zhaozhao nodded: "Yes, we'll make Mom wear a tall hat and parade her through the streets."

Hongyu quickly covered her mouth, shook her head vigorously, and said in a muffled voice, "I won't tell, I absolutely won't tell."

Hongfei also nodded earnestly with a serious expression.

After calming the two children down, Xing Zhaozhao excitedly showed them what she had brought back from the other side of the door: "Look what Mommy brought back for you from the other side of the door!"

Hongyu flipped through the bags Xing Zhaozhao had brought back, his eyes lighting up: "Big apples, big meat buns, and White Rabbit candy and meat! Mom, you're amazing!"

Xing Zhaozhao proudly puffed out her chest: "That's right, I'm the mother."

"Mom, what's this?" Hongyu asked Xing Zhaozhao, holding up a snack package he had never seen before.

Xing Zhaozhao glanced at it and said, "These are called potato chips."

What are potato chips?

"...I don't know. Look at this picture, it looks like it's made of potatoes."

"Is it tasty?"

"...I've never had this before, you can try it later."

Hongfei sat obediently beside him, watching with eager eyes as Hongyu flipped through the novelties that Xing Zhaozhao had brought back, some familiar and some unfamiliar.

"Did Mom bring all of these back from the other side of the door?" He looked up at the wall where Hongyu had pointed to where Xing Zhaozhao had disappeared, his face full of disbelief. "There's actually a door there?"

"Yes." Xing Zhaozhao nodded, looking at her two sons in surprise. "Can't you see it? It's right here."

As she spoke, she reached out and pushed the door that was within reach.

The door creaked open.

Hongfei and Hongyu turned to look, their little faces filled with confusion.

In their eyes, it was always just a wall; they never saw a door.

It wasn't until they saw Xing Zhaozhao's hand reach out and then disappear completely that the two little ones showed a look of panic on their faces. They quickly grabbed Xing Zhaozhao's hand back and breathed a sigh of relief when they saw it return to normal.

Xing Zhaozhao frowned, somewhat disappointed: "You can't even see it? I was hoping to take you there to see it sometime in the future..."

It seems like that won't work now.

What a pity.

She had originally wanted the children to see that world too.

Both little ones looked disappointed.

Xing Zhaozhao patted the two little ones comfortingly: "It's okay, Mommy will go there often in the future and bring back more good things for you."

The two little ones were in a better mood after that.

"Mom, what kind of world is that?" Hongfei asked Xing Zhaozhao curiously.

Xing Zhaozhao described to him in detail what she saw on her trip: wide, flat, and sturdy roads with all kinds of beautiful cars running on them; towering buildings that you couldn't see the top of even if you looked up; supermarkets where you could take and buy whatever you wanted—if you could think of it, you could buy it; there were even telephones that you could put directly into your pocket.

Hongfei's face was full of anticipation after hearing this.

Hongyu looked at Xing Zhaozhao, her eyes sparkling: "Fifty years from now, will we still be here?"

Hongfei patted his younger brother's head: "Of course, but by then, you'll definitely have become a little old man."

Hongyu frowned: "I don't want to become a little old man."

Hongfei chuckled and said, "That's not up to you."

"I don't want to become a little old man!" Hongyu cried out as she lunged at her brother.

The two little ones quickly started making a ruckus.

Xing Zhaozhao let them be and didn't stop them. Thinking of the flooded village on the other side of the door, she thought that next time she went there, she would try to find out where the children were and see if they were doing well.
