A familiar cell phone ringtone sounded outside the office.
Immediately afterwards, Gao Hongfei heard someone knocking on the door.
"Knock knock".
"Come in," Gao Hongfei said.
Gao Yang pushed the door open and came in, still holding his ringing phone: "Dad, you wanted to see me?"
Gao Hongfei hung up the phone and asked him, "You're here to see me too?"
Gao Yang glanced at Ying Rongrong, somewhat cautiously, and said, "I came to see my mother. Aunt Zou told me that she came to your place."
Seeing the apprehension on Gao Yang's face, Ying Rongrong's heart softened.
No matter what, they were children she raised herself. She was a bit impatient before and spoke harshly.
"Come sit down, your dad and I also have something to ask you." Ying Rongrong patted the sofa next to her.
"Okay." Gao Yang responded and obediently went over and sat down.
"How long have you known Sister Xing?" Ying Rongrong asked.
Gao Yang calculated: "It hasn't been long, probably only a little over a month."
Ying Rongrong didn't believe it: "That can't be right. I know you too well. If we've only known each other for a little over a month, would I really get you to help her like this?"
“Uh…” Gao Yang stammered.
Upon seeing this, Gao Hongfei's face darkened, and he said, "What else are you hiding from us? Speak."
“She saved Lianzhou twice,” Gao Yang said.
Ying Rongrong and Gao Hongfei exchanged a quick glance, a look of surprise on their faces: "Why are we talking about Lianzhou now?"
Knowing he couldn't hide it any longer, Gao Yang told everyone about how he had taken Gao Lianzhou to the mountains to hunt wild boars and almost got into trouble, and how yesterday, Gao Lianzhou got into a dispute with someone over buying cut cakes and was taken to the police station, and how he had to clean up the mess for him. As for the consequences, he didn't care; he was too busy taking care of himself right now.
Ying Rongrong and Gao Hongfei were both shocked when they heard this.
"You actually took Lianzhou to hunt wild boar? Do you have a brain? How old is Lianzhou? If something happens, how are you going to explain it to your older brother and sister-in-law?" Gao Hongfei pointed at Gao Yang's nose and cursed.
“He insisted on going…” Gao Yang was also helpless; everyone in the family knew how persistent that kid was.
Gao Hongfei snorted coldly: "You gave in too, didn't you? If you weren't willing, would he have been able to go?"
Gao Yang pursed his lips and remained silent; he had indeed underestimated the risks.
"That kid Lianzhou is getting more and more troublesome as he gets older. How old is he? He's already gotten himself into the police station." Gao Hongfei got angrier and angrier as he thought about it. "No, I have to talk to the boss about this. He needs to teach that kid a lesson."
After saying that, he immediately called his eldest son, Gao Han, who was far away in Beijing, and complained to him.
A short while later, Gao Yang received a call from Gao Lianzhou, who yelled at the top of her lungs, "Uncle, you actually betrayed me! I'll never be friends with you again!"
Gao Yang: "..."
Thank you so much.
Gao Yang didn't say a word and silently hung up the phone.
"I never imagined that Sister Xing had saved Lianzhou," Ying Rongrong said.
No wonder Gao Yang helped her so much; if it were her, she would have done the same, after all, it was a life-saving favor.
She regretted not giving him a friendly look earlier because she was still traumatized by his face.
"You should have told me sooner," Ying Rongrong said, giving him a reproachful look.
Gao Yang smiled helplessly: "It's all because of that kid Lian Zhou. He wouldn't let us tell you, afraid that if you knew, he wouldn't allow him to go out and cause trouble."
"Us?" Ying Rongrong raised an eyebrow slightly. "Who else knows?"
“Both the stars and the moon know,” Gao Yang said.
"You guys really know how to keep things from me." Ying Rongrong glared at him, then couldn't help but ask worriedly, "How big was that wild boar? Was it injured?"
Gao Yang shook his head: "It weighs several hundred pounds, but Sister Xing is stronger. She knocked her down with one punch."
Ying Rongrong was shocked: "My God! Several hundred pounds? How did you do that?"
"It's innate, just like Fanxing, but he's much stronger than Fanxing right now," Gao Yang said.
Gao Hongfei's fingers trembled slightly: "Born...strong?"
"Yes." Gao Yang nodded, then noticed that Gao Hongfei's expression was a little off and asked, "What's wrong, Dad?"
Gao Hongfei trembled slightly, leaning on his cane, and slowly walked to the sofa opposite them and sat down, saying in a hoarse voice, "Your grandmother was also naturally strong."
so?
Gao Yang was puzzled.
Grandma passed away a long time ago, didn't she?
Looking at Gao Hongfei's appearance, Ying Rongrong's heart sank.
Oh no, is he going to fall into his old habits again?
"You just said that she looks about seven or eight points similar to that person?" Gao Hongfei asked, looking at Ying Rongrong.
Ying Rongrong nodded stiffly, her face expressionless, seemingly somewhat unwilling: "Mm."
“That woman looks about seven or eight points like my mother,” Gao Hongfei said.
After saying that, he looked at Gao Yang again: "When I was on the phone with you just now, I heard a woman talking next to me. Was that her?"
Gao Yang recalled that Xing Zhaozhao had indeed spoken when he returned to the coffee shop after his phone call with his father, before he had even hung up. He nodded in agreement.
“That voice sounds a lot like my mom’s,” Gao Hongfei said.
Ying Rongrong's face turned pale, and she suddenly stood up: "Enough, Gao Hongfei, your mother-in-law is dead, she's been dead for over fifty years, she can't come back to life. Stop thinking about these nonsense. Do you want to repeat the mistakes of twenty years ago? Your father-in-law is over eighty, but he's still in good health. He could beat you up like before if he wanted to. Think about it, can your body still take that beating?"
Gao Hongfei: "..."
"I just wanted to..." He still wouldn't give up.
Before he could finish speaking, Ying Rongrong firmly rejected his idea: "Don't even think about it."
Ying Rongrong looked at Gao Hongfei with a hint of sadness in her eyes. She knew about the hurdle in his heart, but after so many years, it was time for him to move on.
“You don’t have a mother anymore, Hongfei. No matter how much other people look like her, they are not her,” she said softly.
Gao Hongfei's eyes glistened as he stared at Ying Rongrong for a moment before raising his hand to cover his eyes.
Ying Rongrong didn't disturb him. She tugged at Gao Yang, who was standing somewhat helplessly to the side, and quietly left Gao Hongfei's office so that he could be alone for a while.
"I'm sorry, Mom may have said something that upset you today," Ying Rongrong apologized to Gao Yang.
Gao Yang shook his head dismissively: "I know what Mom is worried about."
Perhaps I didn't quite understand before, but I do now.
He also knew what had happened back then.
"Mom isn't trying to interfere with your freedom to make friends. It's just that, as you know, something like that happened back then, so I'm bound to be a little cautious when I meet someone like Sister Xing," Ying Rongrong explained.
Gao Yang nodded: "I understand, but Sister Xing probably wouldn't do it. Putting aside the two times we encountered her before, it didn't seem like something that could be premeditated. Besides, her age is a factor. You want Dad to have a woman in her twenties as his mother? Even if Dad could do it, Grandpa wouldn't agree."
Ying Rongrong imagined the scene and couldn't help but laugh: "That's true."
"Besides, even if Dad and Grandpa are willing, Sister Xing herself might not be. She has three children at home," Gao Yang said.
"She already has three children? That's really impressive. Anyway, she saved Lianzhou twice. If there's a chance in the future, we should help her if we can," Ying Rongrong said.
Gao Yang nodded: "Okay."
"Oh, right," Ying Rongrong suddenly remembered something and instructed Gao Yang, "the end of the month is your grandmother's death anniversary. Have someone go to the grave to check on things, just in case anything goes wrong."
"I know," Gao Yang replied, then remembered something else. He glanced furtively at his father's office, leaned close to Ying Rongrong's ear, and whispered, "There's something I forgot to say."
Looking at his mysterious expression, Ying Rongrong asked curiously, "What's wrong?"
“Sister Xing is also called Xing Zhaozhao, the same name as Grandma. Moreover, Lianzhou and I first met her on the mountain where Grandma was buried,” Gao Yang said.
