Since his father went to the front lines, Xiao Jiashu and his younger brother went to live with their mother at their maternal grandfather's house in Beijing. He developed the habit of frequently going to the guard uncle at the gate of the compound to ask if there were any letters for him, because his father had promised to write to him often when he had time. Although his father was very busy at the front lines and often did not receive a letter for a month, he still maintained that expectation.
Xing Jiashu clearly remembers that day. He and his younger brother were playing outside when they encountered the bully of the compound, Little Fatty and his gang. They got into a fight, and despite being outnumbered, they won. It was the first time he had ever won, and he was overjoyed.
When he was taking his younger brother home, he happened to pass by the gate of the compound, so he stopped by the guard to ask him something.
Because he came so often, the guard had long since become familiar with him. Upon seeing him, before he could even ask, the guard would smile and ask, "Here to ask if your father has sent you a letter again?"
Xiao Jiashu smiled and nodded, "Mm." After saying that, she looked at him expectantly.
The guard shook his head: "Not today."
Xiao Jiashu looked regretful, thanked the guard, and prepared to take his younger brother back.
“However, there is a letter for your mother, sent from Lanyuan Town. If I remember correctly, your father’s hometown is in Lanyuan Town, right? It’s probably a letter from his family back home,” the guard suddenly said.
Xiao Jiashu's eyes immediately lit up: "Auntie?"
Xiao Jiashu knew that his uncle had also gone to the front lines like his father. However, his aunt was pregnant, and his uncle was worried that no one would take care of her, so he sent her and his two younger cousins back to their hometown.
Xiao Jiashu and his two cousins, especially Xiao Hongfei, grew up together. Back then, they lived in the same military compound. Even after his father was transferred and his family had to leave, and they could no longer see each other often, the children's friendship was not affected by the distance.
Although he didn't receive a letter from his father, Xiao Jiashu was still very happy to know how his cousins were doing. He looked at the guard expectantly and asked, "Where's the letter?"
"It's already been delivered to your mother's house," the guard said.
Xiao Jiashu immediately grabbed her younger brother and ran back home.
Mom was sitting on the sofa eating sunflower seeds, and sure enough, there was a letter on the coffee table in front of her, which had already been opened.
Little Jia Shu excitedly ran over to look: "Is it a letter from Auntie?"
He only had time to read the address at the beginning, and it was indeed sent from Lanyuan, before his mother snatched the letter away.
The mother's expression was very unpleasant: "What letter from your aunt? What letter from your aunt?"
Xiao Jiashu was a little confused, pointing to the letter in her hand: "Isn't that it? I think it was sent from Lanyuan Town..."
"That letter came from their Chen family's hometown; it has nothing to do with your aunt." After saying that, Mom put the letter in her pocket without looking back and went back to her room.
In the hospital ward, Xing Jiashu stared intently at Chen Wei: "Was that letter really sent from the Chen family's hometown? Or was it from Aunt?"
Chen Wei's heart skipped a beat, and she said angrily, "I said it was sent from the Chen family's hometown, so it was sent from the Chen family's hometown. Don't you even believe your own mother?"
"If the Chen family in their hometown were to send a letter, it would be sent to Dad. How did it end up in your hands?" Chen Hao asked, his deep gaze fixed on Chen Wei. Even though she denied it to the death, he already knew the truth in his heart.
Chen Wei was stunned for a moment, and stammered, "It was sent to Dad, but I was the only one at home at the time."
After saying that, she met Chen Hao's disappointed gaze and couldn't help but say angrily, "Brother, whose side are you on? Why are you always taking the side of outsiders?"
“If you could keep it a secret, I would help you keep it a secret, but do you think you can still keep it a secret now?” Chen Hao gestured for her to look at Xing Zhaoming.
Chen Wei turned her head and saw Xing Zhaoming's gloomy face. Her heart sank instantly. She still tried to explain, "Zhaoming, don't listen to Jiashu's nonsense. I really didn't receive Zhaozhao's letter..."
"Let's get a divorce," Xing Zhaoming said.
Chen Wei felt her head buzz, and she froze on the spot.
Chen Hao and Xing Jiashu frowned at Xing Zhaoming, both looking disapproving.
"Isn't it a bit much, Zhaoming? So many years have passed, and you and Weiwei have been through so much together. You're practically half-buried now, and you even have great-grandchildren. There's no need to get a divorce now, is there?" Chen Hao said.
“That’s right, Dad. If Aunt were still here, she definitely wouldn’t want to see you at your age causing such a messy situation with your wife and children falling apart,” Xing Jiashu added, offering his advice.
Hearing the familiar words spoken by Xing Jiashu, Xing Zhaoming's eyes reddened, and his voice choked as he said, "Yes, it's because your aunt is always so considerate, always thinking so much about me, her brother who hasn't been able to protect her properly, that I can't bear to let her suffer any injustice."
After saying that, Xing Zhaoming turned to Chen Hao and asked, "If Zhaozhao were replaced by Weiwei, would you, brother, be able to handle it so lightly and let it go?"
Chen Hao opened his mouth, but couldn't say a word.
He looked at Chen Wei, whose hair was completely white and whose expression was somewhat deranged, and sighed helplessly. If it were his sister, even if she had caused such a big mess, he would still have to find a way to clean up her mess.
Chen Hao looked at Xing Zhaoming, trying to persuade him again. After all, they had been married for so many years and were not without feelings for each other. Perhaps there was still room for reconciliation.
But before he could even speak, he was interrupted by Chen Wei's sharp voice.
"So what if I received her letter? I only married you, Xing Zhaoming. Why should I have to control Xing Zhaozhao as well? I don't owe her anything. I am clearly your wife, the most important person in your heart, yet you keep mentioning her in front of me all day long. I'm so annoyed by her, I don't want to talk to her at all."
Xing Zhaoming looked at Chen Wei in disbelief: "What's wrong with you? Zhaozhao is my own sister. My parents passed away early, and my brother and I grew up relying on each other. What's wrong with me taking care of her a little more?"
Chen Wei glared at him: "Not even my own sister."
"..." Xing Zhaoming was at a loss for words.
Chen Hao and Xing Jiashu looked at Chen Wei with equally astonished expressions.
Chen Hao's expression was particularly grave. It seemed this girl had gone astray; he hadn't even noticed before. He was also somewhat inexplicably relieved that she only acted crazy towards her brother-in-law and hadn't harmed the rest of the family.
Xing Zhaoming took a deep breath, suppressing his almost frantic emotions, and asked, "Since you don't like Zhaozhao, why didn't you tell me sooner?"
“I told you, you definitely wouldn’t choose to marry me,” Chen Wei said.
Xing Zhaoming: "..." So she knew.
"Did you ever really love me, Chen Wei?" Xing Zhaoming asked.
