Chapter 38 The Taste of Mom

Gao Yang had just sat down at Hao Xiuning's house when his phone rang.

He glanced at it, saw it was an unfamiliar number, and hung up immediately.

This number is a private number; only relatives and acquaintances know it, and everyone else should ignore it.

Hao Xiuning brought out the tea and, upon seeing it, asked, "Why didn't you answer? If you have something important to do, go ahead and do it. It's alright here."

Gao Yang shook his head: "It's nothing, it's probably just a nuisance call."

Hao Xiuning couldn't help but sigh, "These harassing phone calls are indeed becoming more and more common, and the government doesn't seem to care."

"Mmm," Gao Yang replied casually.

Hao Xiuning handed him tea, sat down opposite him, and asked with a smile, "What brings you here to see me today?"

Gao Yang handed over what he had brought: "I bought some wild game on the street yesterday. Grandpa saw it and thought it was good. He said it tasted just like before. Dad asked me to bring some over for my great-aunt to try."

Hao Xiuning laughed and replied, "Really? I haven't found wild food that tastes like it used to in a long time. Now, many things that claim to be wild are actually cultivated. There are too many scammers. Are you sure you haven't been fooled?"

Gao Yang immediately pictured Xing Zhaozhao's face in his mind, and shook his head with a smile: "She probably wouldn't lie."

"Really?" Hao Xiuning was still skeptical. She opened the bag and took a look. The familiar scent wafting from inside suddenly made her eyes red.

Gao Yang was startled: "What's wrong, Auntie?"

With tears in her eyes but a smile still on her face, Hao Xiuning shook her head and said, "No, it's nothing, I'm just too excited. These smells are not only familiar, but I can also smell my mother's scent. It's as if she made all of these things herself."

Gao Yang was finally relieved: "I'm glad you like it."

"Where did you buy it? I'd like to buy some more after we finish eating," Hao Xiuning asked.

"I just met a lady on the street. She said she originally lived in the mountains, and it's hard to say when she'll come out, or if I'll ever see her again," Gao Yang said.

Although he gave her his phone number, he had no idea whether she would actually call.

"I see," Hao Xiuning said with a regretful expression, "Then there's really no other way."

"If you happen to run into me again next time, buy me some more," she asked Gao Yang.

Gao Yang readily agreed: "No problem."

After finishing his business and sitting for a while, Gao Yang said goodbye to Hao Xiuning.

Knowing that the young people were busy, Hao Xiuning didn't try to keep him and saw him straight to the door.

Gao Yang left Hao Xiuning's house and had just stepped onto the street when his phone rang again. He took it out and saw it was the same unfamiliar number as before.

He kept getting calls; could it be that someone really had something important to discuss with him?

Gao Yang frowned, hesitated for a moment, and then answered the phone.

The moment the call connected, he immediately heard a group of... old men on the other end exclaim in surprise, "It's connected! It's connected!"

Gao Yang: "..."

What's going on?

"Excuse me..." Gao Yang had just started to speak, but before he could finish, he suddenly heard a familiar, cheerful female voice call out, "Mr. Gao? I am Xing Zhaozhao."

Gao Yang was taken aback.

Xing Zhaozhao? Sister Xing? What a coincidence, she shares the same name as his grandmother.

On the other end of the phone, Xing Zhaozhao waited for a while, but Gao Yang didn't say anything. She wondered if the call had been disconnected, and looked at the phone screen again to make sure.

It's not broken.

"Mr. Gao?" she called again.

Gao Yang then realized, "Oh, it's Sister Xing. Is there something you need?"

Finally hearing voices, Xing Zhaozhao breathed a sigh of relief: "You gave me an extra thousand yuan yesterday. Didn't I say I would give you a wild beehive as compensation? I've already brought it over. Do you have time to come and pick it up?"

"Now?" Gao Yang asked.

“Yes,” Xing Zhaozhao replied.

"Alright, I'm out here anyway." Gao Yang got into the car and asked, "Where are you now?"

Xing Zhaozhao looked around and said, "I don't know either."

She wasn't very familiar with this place yet.

Gao Yang: "..."

Are you serious, sister?

"Where is this?" Xing Zhaozhao turned to ask the old men beside her.

"People's Road next to Zhaohong Square," said Grandpa Song.

"People's Road next to Zhaohong Square," Xing Zhaozhao repeated to Gao Yang.

Gao Yang looked at the road sign at the intersection ahead and fell silent again.

It's right next door.

"Okay, I'll be there right away," Gao Yang said, and then hung up the phone.

Xing Zhaozhao handed the phone back to Grandpa Song: "He said he'd be there soon."

Grandpa Song put away his phone: "Let's sit and wait a while. They say it'll be here soon, but it won't be very quick."

Xing Zhaozhao nodded and sat down next to them to watch the old men play cards.

A moment later, a Mercedes pulled up beside them, and Gao Yang got out of the car: "Sister Xing."

"Oh, you're here," Xing Zhaozhao replied, turning to look at Grandpa Song. "That's pretty fast."

Grandpa Song: "..."

He didn't expect it to happen so quickly.

Xing Zhaozhao took the bag containing the wild beehives out of her basket and handed it to Gao Yang: "I've already cleaned it up a bit. There are still quite a few bee pupae inside. Take it back and have someone pick them out and fry them until they're crunchy."

Gao Yang carried the bag, his expression somewhat indescribable.

I feel a little nauseous.

Xing Zhaozhao gave the wild beehive to Gao Yang, and looked at him with a smile, not in a hurry to leave.

Gao Yang raised an eyebrow slightly: "Is there anything else?"

"There's something else I'd like to ask for your help with," Xing Zhaozhao said.

"What is it?" Gao Yang asked.

Xing Zhaozhao turned her head and glanced at the several old men behind her who all had their ears perked up: "..."

"Can we find another place where we can talk?" Xing Zhaozhao asked.

Gao Yang thought for a moment and nodded: "Okay, get in the car."

Xing Zhaozhao got into the car with Gao Yang.

The old men watched Gao Yang's car drive away with regret on their faces.

No more gossip to hear.

Gao Yang found a high-end coffee shop nearby that he occasionally frequented.

The waiters in the coffee shop all recognized Gao Yang. When they saw him suddenly bring over a woman who looked like a country bumpkin, they couldn't help but show surprise on their faces. They frequently looked at Xing Zhaozhao, sizing her up and down.

Gao Yang noticed this and couldn't help but frown.

Xing Zhaozhao looked around with a nonchalant expression, curiously observing everything before her.

I may be a country bumpkin, I may be unsophisticated, but so what? No matter how much you dislike me, you still have to come and serve me obediently.
