Chapter 237 The Unpredictable Sword Armor 1
Fu Feng glanced at me. It wasn't just me and Ma Zao; it seemed that even he noticed the mysterious randomness involved.
"What a coincidence..."
He frowned deeply and murmured, "Could this also be part of the fortune teller's scheme...?"
"Senior Fufeng, do you care a lot about Master?" Dongche asked.
Fu Feng said warily, “Of course. The Divination Master is a figure who can observe the past and the future, no different from a true deity. It is said that those who receive his attention will fall into the web of fate he has woven himself, until death—and even after death, they will be in his calculations. How can I not be concerned about such a coincidence?”
Since fortune tellers can predict the future, they can naturally manipulate reality to their desired outcome through clever calculations. Many seemingly coincidental events may actually be the result of such people manipulating things behind the scenes.
However, from my and Asahi's perspective, the current coincidences are more likely the result of our jinxed nature, and even the appearance of the winter car leans more towards this direction. While we can't rule out the possibility of the fortune teller manipulating things behind the scenes, we currently lack clues in that regard.
Fu Feng seems to have a psychological wariness of the fortune teller's ability to manipulate fate. Or is it reasonable to be so wary of that type of unpredictable person?
“Let’s get back to the researcher who was captured. Dongche, I think the ‘suspiciousness’ you’re referring to goes beyond just the coincidence of his appearance, right?” I asked.
"Yes!"
Dongche nodded vigorously and answered honestly, "After I caught that researcher, I compared the wanted list of members of the Humanitarian Affairs Department in the Luoshan electronic archives and found that the person was suspected to be a capable assistant of Ying Lingyun, 'Silver Mask,' one of the highest decision-makers of the Humanitarian Affairs Department!"
Because the Zhu family had already uploaded information about Ying Lingyun, it seems that everyone in Luoshan now knows that the silver-masked man from the Humanitarian Department is Ying Lingyun.
But I noticed a detail: "Wait, you're talking about Ying Lingyun's right-hand man, not Dr. Silver Mask... or 'Possible Doppelganger'?"
“That’s right, at least that’s what the wanted poster says, and the appearance matches. Although he used magical tools to disguise himself, I can see through his true face directly.” Dongche nodded. “This person should have a lot of top-secret information related to the Humanitarian Affairs Department and Ying Lingyun. I think it is necessary to interrogate him thoroughly.”
Are there still characters like this at the old Humanitarian Division outpost? It seems I missed a lot of important things when I infiltrated there last time. It's like playing a virtual stealth game only once and missing out on many collectibles.
Suddenly, Fu Feng's communication device rang. He took it out and spoke to the person on the other end: "...Is this the prison area? What's the matter? Perfect timing. Take the humanitarian researcher that Dong Che arrested last night to the interrogation room. I need to personally..."
"...Wait, what did you say?"
The person on the other end of the communication device seemed to be shouting something, but it was unclear what they were saying. Fu Feng exclaimed in surprise after hearing it.
Almost simultaneously, the sound of explosions and destruction came from afar. We immediately looked in that direction. At the corner of the passage, a silver-white "monster" appeared, rampaging wildly.
Upon closer inspection, it wasn't a monster, but a "warrior" about two meters tall, wearing airtight silver-white metal armor.
The metal armor was covered in spikes, not only on the shoulders, elbows, and knees, but also on the chest and back, where numerous treacherous and brutal sharp structures were present. Upon closer inspection, one would discover that those spikes were actually sword tips, and the entire armor itself seemed to be woven together from a large number of twisted and sculpted swords.
It was clear this person wasn't a member of the Fufeng base, but a hostile sabotage agent from who-knows-where. The other demon hunters standing in the passageway unleashed a variety of spells to stop the berserk armored warrior. Lightning, gales, shockwaves too fast to see with the naked eye, and indistinct colored lights… all sorts of different forces swept out. But without even looking, I judged them all to be ineffective.
The surrounding demon hunters were at most at the level of resident demon hunters, while this armored warrior was radiating magical energy fluctuations at the level of a rank demon hunter. To say they were completely ineffective would be an exaggeration; the spells did seem to hinder his movements to some extent, but none of them were able to penetrate the armor's defenses.
The armored warrior did not retaliate, but simply endured the surrounding magic, seemingly trying to escape the pursuit.
Fu Feng put down the communication device, glanced at the chaos in the distance, and said expressionlessly, "The Dao Si researcher that Dong Che captured just escaped from the prison area. It seems he secretly hid some powerful artifact and used it to break through the prison area's multiple defenses."
When he suddenly brought this up, I understood what he meant: "You mean, this guy in armor is......"
Dongche looked carefully into the distance, as if sensing something, and then made a judgment: "He is that researcher from the Humanitarian Affairs Department."
That berserker-like posture was nothing like that of a "researcher".
As they were talking, the fugitive wearing heavy armor ran out of the concentrated fire zone in the distance.
Unfortunately, he was running this way.
This section of the passage is probably the least tense.
Although I could easily subdue this fugitive, Fufeng is ultimately the owner of this territory, so it's better to let him handle it. In fact, Fufeng seemed to share this sentiment; he had already raised his hand.
Dongche, eager to try, stepped forward and said, "Senior Zhuangcheng, Senior Fufeng, please leave this to me..."
However, before he could finish speaking, another person who also intended to make a move, without uttering a single unnecessary word, took the lead and went into action.
This person was Ma Zao. She summoned a phantom recurve blade out of thin air and flashed forward without any hesitation. In the blink of an eye, she had covered a large distance and was about to collide with the fugitive wearing heavy armor.
I was quite surprised. After all, this fugitive was a level 1, and in terms of pure strength, he could very well rival the monster creators of the past. Asahi, who was at the level of a resident monster, couldn't even last a single round against him.
However, since Asaha took the initiative to attack, it means she has a chance of winning. At least I never thought she was the type to recklessly go into battle without any confidence. And I also noticed something else amiss—at this moment, her movement speed far exceeded the peak speed she had when fighting the Shadow Monster before.
Seeing someone blocking his way, the heavily armored fugitive showed no mercy, quickly raising his hand armor, which seemed to be woven from countless sharp swords, and was about to smash it down on Ma Zao's head.
Asaho then uttered two words to the enemy.
"Don't move."
As the voice rang out, the frenzied, heavily armored fugitive seemed to be frozen in place, his forward momentum abruptly halted. Asahi's movements, however, continued without pause; she unleashed a phantom-like recurve blade at the enemy.
The blade struck the side of the heavily armored fugitive's torso, like a giant pounding a sandbag with a club. The heavily armored fugitive was slammed against the wall next to the passage with a thud.
If it were the walls of an ordinary building, they would have been easily smashed through like tofu. I don't know what material the walls of the passageway at the Fufeng base are made of, or what kind of reinforcement process they have undergone, but they have not broken through. There is only a huge dent, and the cracks reach the ceiling and floor.
Unfortunately, the opponent's armor wasn't directly torn apart by the slash; only some cracks and breaks appeared on the sides. This attack also seemed to have helped him break free from his petrified state. He landed on the ground and, as if seeking revenge, charged towards Asahi with murderous intent.
Asahi removed the phantom curved sword from her right hand, then turned around and chanted the final "incantation"—
"All things are impermanent, and all conditioned existence is suffering."
Then, the battle ended.
It took me two seconds to figure out what had happened. In the past, Asaha had used her power of rebirth to recreate the black mist vortex portal that had appeared in the monster creator's "clinic"; and just now, she did the same thing, except that what she recreated was not a portal, but her own slash.
The instant she uttered the incantation, the "slashes" previously inflicted on the heavily armored fugitive reappeared out of thin air. And not just once, but at least a hundred times. It was as if countless unseen soldiers were wielding invisible blades around him; the heavily armored fugitive, intending to attack Ma Zao from behind, could no longer advance an inch. Over a hundred unseen slashes bombarded his entire body in an instant. His seemingly indestructible silver-white metal armor crumbled instantly.
The slash not only destroyed the armor but also penetrated deep into the fugitive's flesh and bone, spurting out blood like an explosion. The fugitive, clad in prison clothes and torn to pieces, fell from the wreckage, landing on the ground, bloodied and motionless.
Asa looked at Fuyusha. Although she didn't show any emotion on her face, I felt like she wanted to put her hands on her hips, as if to say, "How about it?"
"Huh?" Dongche asked, bewildered. "What did I do?"
Mazao then looked at me, seemingly waiting for my reaction.
"Wow, you've become so strong..." I exclaimed in agreement.
Mazao nodded reservedly, a hint of happiness appearing on her face, seemingly quite satisfied with my reaction.
"Um...may I ask you something?" Fu Feng asked tactfully, "Was our important intelligence source killed?"
Ma Zao was instantly petrified.
