Even though she had expected it, Song Xibai still felt a chill run down her spine when she heard it.
"That's too ruthless."
She muttered to herself, then quickly looked up.
"Wei Hong, go and see if that's the maid you met."
Wei Hong hurriedly ran out again.
The lotus pond wasn't far from the courtyard. When Wei Hong arrived, several villagers were retrieving the body.
After the man was pulled out of the water, Wei Hong went over and carefully examined his face.
But it has grown so much that its original appearance is no longer visible.
Wei Hong thought about it carefully for a while, then her eyes lit up and she hurriedly tried to pry the maid's hand away.
There is a shallow scar at the base of the right thumb.
This wound is fresh; it must have been recently inflicted. Because it has been soaked in water for too long, the wound has turned white, and the skin and flesh have been turned inside out.
Wei Hong pursed her lips, confirming that it was indeed that maid.
Earlier, when she was leading the way up the mountain, her hand was accidentally cut by thorns.
After confirming her identity, Wei Hong felt a surge of anger.
The person is dead, and the trail goes cold. How do we find the mastermind behind the murder?
They dared to harm their master; they all deserve to die!
Wei Hong strode back into the courtyard with heavy steps and a murderous look on her face.
When they reached the door, they were stopped by Yue Zhuangtou.
"Your Highness suddenly ordered the guards to surround the area. What happened?"
"I asked in a deep voice," said the head of the Yue family.
Wei Hong's eyes flickered: "It's about the poisoning of the people in the kitchen! Your Highness probably had someone sneak in, which is why you had the courtyard sealed off."
Yue Zhuangtou scoffed.
"You little brat, you dare to fool me? You won't tell the truth?"
Wei Hong looked completely innocent: "I'm just telling the truth!"
"Don't play these tricks on Uncle Yue. If it were really because of the poisoning in the kitchen, His Highness would have given the order when he received the news, not now. After those people induced vomiting, the poison has been mostly neutralized. That little girl named Dingxiang is having someone make mung bean soup!"
Although Yue Zhuangtou did not often appear in front of his master, he could not escape the eyes of anyone who made a move in the courtyard.
Wei Hong pursed her lips and said, "Since Uncle Yue already knows, he shouldn't have asked me. I won't reveal a single word about my master's affairs to outsiders. Not even to you, Uncle Yue."
Yue Zhuangtou looked slightly taken aback, as if he had suddenly realized something, and for the first time looked at Wei Hong with an extremely serious gaze.
"You've become much more sensible, girl! In that case, I'll ask the master myself later!"
As he spoke, he stepped aside to let Wei Hong enter through the gate.
Wei Hong ran into the main room and told her what she had seen, even explaining clearly how the scar got there.
Song Xibai sighed.
"Your Highness, send someone to Princess Wu with a message! She is ostensibly her maid. Although she is dead, we might be able to find some clues by questioning Princess Wu."
Seeing her pale face, the Crown Prince wondered if she was frightened or exhausted, and felt a pang of heartache.
"I will handle this matter. You should go and rest. Your health is the most important thing."
Song Xibai nodded, then shook her head.
"There's one more thing! Your Highness, please don't blame us for the poisoning in the kitchen; it must have been an accident. I looked at the two old women's fingernails, and they were both dyed with pink floral water. It's likely that oleander blossoms got mixed in when they were picking flowers. Since they dyed their fingernails, the blossoms naturally got into the food when they cooked, and the others who ate it were poisoned."
"Fortunately, the poison wasn't too strong, and I was fine after inducing vomiting."
The crown prince frowned, his face full of anger.
"Outrageous! How could they be so careless! How can they deter others if they aren't punished?"
Seeing that he was truly angry, Song Xibai couldn't help but advise, "They don't know either! Why don't we send the two of them home and just not let them touch the food anymore?"
She paused for a moment, then continued.
"By the way, we should also tell other people that oleander is poisonous, so that similar things don't happen in the future. Although the poison won't kill you, it's still quite painful."
