These rooms are now empty.
Originally, the princesses lived with the imperial concubines and consorts, but there wasn't enough room in Cining Palace, so the princesses were allowed to move over.
Inside Qifeng Pavilion, the eldest princess sat by the window, resting her chin on her hand and gazing out the window. A shy look occasionally flashed across her face, clearly showing the appearance of a young woman in love.
Consort Shen barged in without being announced.
Seeing his daughter like this, how could he have any doubts?
She pushed open the door and strode inside.
"Mother, what brings you here?"
In a panic, the eldest princess got up and went out to greet them.
Unexpectedly, instead of receiving her mother's loving smile, she was met with a hard slap.
Snap!
The eldest princess fell to the ground, covering her face, staring at her mother in disbelief.
Her skin was delicate, and the slap caused her face to swell up instantly, with tears streaming down her face.
"Mother..."
She had barely uttered a sound when Consort Shen interrupted her.
"Don't call me Mother! I don't have a daughter like you!"
Consort Shen was breathing rapidly, her face flushed with anger, and she pointed at her with a trembling finger.
"How could you be so shameless? You've taken a fancy to a married man! And a vulgar guard at that! Do you even know you're a princess?"
The eldest princess flinched, not expecting her mother to find out so quickly.
She wanted to explain, but Consort Shen was in a fit of anger and wouldn't listen to her.
"You've already disgraced yourself in front of outsiders! Is a lowly, unranked guard really worth all this trouble? What is he anyway?! You've debased yourself, unworthy of being my daughter!"
The eldest princess's face turned pale and then red as she was scolded.
She didn't understand. She just liked someone and wanted to marry him. How did that mean she was degrading herself?
For the first time, she, who was always docile, raised her head to her mother.
“How did I lose face? I just wanted to marry him. At least I didn’t throw myself at Father like you did, Mother. You say I debase myself? That’s something I learned from you.”
