Chapter 14 Placement Exam
School ended at 5:30 pm. When they got home, Li Mingfang had already prepared the meal. After dinner, Li Xiang and Li Mengxin took out old newspapers and transparent plastic sheets.
"Let's wrap up the books! Take whatever you like."
After the others had made their choices, Gu Yin said, "I want the newspaper one. Mom, could you wrap it for me? I'm going back to study first. I have my placement test tomorrow."
"Okay, I'll write down the subjects for you later so it'll be easier for you to pick them up! Go and read your books!" Li Mengxin reached out and took Gu Yin's books, urging her to hurry back to her room.
Gu Yin took out her notebooks for the three subjects and went through them again. By the time Gu Hua returned to her room, she had almost finished reviewing them. Then she asked Gu Hua to help her memorize them and then asked her to give her some questions. While Gu Hua was busy, Gu Yin took a shower and came back to find that Gu Hua was already asleep.
Holding the problem set, Gu Yin was busy until 11 o'clock before going to sleep.
I woke up this morning feeling groggy and yawning constantly.
"001, is there anything in the store that can help me stay awake?"
001 took flight: "Yes, you can buy elixirs in the cultivation world with your points. When the shop is upgraded, you'll have a chance to win a prize. If you're lucky enough, you might even win the System Library. Time is restricted in the System Library, so you can study there. Of course, no one has ever won it except my master. I hope you're lucky!"
Gu Yin thought for a moment. She only got one point for completing one task. She would have to complete ten tasks to unlock the shop, and there was no guarantee she would get the item. She decided to buy a pill first.
When I arrived at the classroom, the teacher was already there.
Exams nowadays aren't as strict as they were in high school. Students still sit in pairs, and there aren't separate A and B versions of the exam. The teachers are watching from the podium, and they can see any movement. Students rely entirely on their self-discipline.
The exam starts promptly at 8:30. There are two subjects in the morning: Chinese and English. The math exam will be in the afternoon. The results will be available tomorrow.
"After you sit down, stop whispering to each other. When you get your exam paper, check if any pages are missing. If not, write your name and class on it. Wait for the bell to ring before you start writing. Everyone should be conscientious. Anyone who cheats will have all their scores invalidated. You can only hand in your paper half an hour after the exam starts. Students who hand in their papers early can go to the restroom first and then wait for the next exam, which starts at 10:30," the teacher said as she walked around.
Flipping through the exam paper, the strong smell of ink made Gu Yin momentarily dazed. Nowadays, exam papers are all printed, and the ink smell is very strong. Usually, after finishing an exam paper, your wrist will be black. To be honest, she quite misses those days.
I glanced at the test paper and found sections on vocabulary accumulation, writing words from pinyin, sentence and paragraph usage, daily accumulation, extracurricular reading, reading comprehension, and writing.
Everything else was fine, but Gu Yin was a little worried about reading comprehension. After all, her soul was that of an adult, and at a certain age, what you understand is definitely different from what you understand at your current age. Gu Yin was afraid that her thinking was too advanced.
There were four reading comprehension passages, two of which were homework exercises. Fortunately, Gu Yin hadn't missed them while reading, which was a pleasant surprise. As for the other two, she could just write them according to her own ideas and leave it to her.
Qin Xueming was still pondering the next line of the ancient poem when he saw Gu Yin begin to turn the page.
Seeing her like this, Qin Xueming quickly moved on to the next question.
By the time he got to the reading comprehension section, good heavens, Gu Yin had already handed in her paper! So rushed! Does Gu Yin never give up on any of the questions? Does this mean they can't be classmates?
Gu Yin finished writing her paper, handed it in, went to the restroom, and bought a bottle of water. When she came out, she saw Qin Xueming loitering around.
Qin Xueming was wondering where Gu Yin had gone when he saw her come out of the convenience store and quickly ran over.
"Hey deskmate! Why did you come out so early? You could have just written something random where you didn't know how, at least you could have gotten some points for writing. If you leave it blank, you won't get any points. Are you stupid?!"
The teacher awarded one point for the writing skills. Before, when I didn't know how to write, I did write a bunch of nonsensical things, and the teacher gave me one point for my hard work.
"I've finished writing, don't worry."
Qin Xueming's eyes widened: "Have you been secretly studying at home behind my back?"
Hearing Qin Xueming say this, Wang Yanni, the elementary school class monitor who was passing by, looked over.
"Wow, Gu Yin, you really studied at home! You must have done really well on the test this time! Unlike me, I went on vacation during the summer vacation!"
Wang Yanni's family lives in town, and she travels around during the summer vacation, unlike them who have to do farm work.
Gu Yin smiled and said, "If you've forgotten most of it, just review it. We don't know how you did on the exam yet."
As Zhao Xiaomin came out of the convenience store, she patted Gu Yin on the shoulder as she passed by: "That's how it should be! I saw it too! Keep up the good work!"
Gu Yin nodded: "Okay!"
Wang Yanni pursed her lips, said nothing more, and turned to leave.
Gu Yin glanced at her, then turned to Qin Xueming: "Have you finished writing?"
Qin Xueming scratched his head: "I've finished writing everything else, but I forgot about the classical poetry part. I only remembered it after I left! But it's okay, it's only three points!"
The two talked for a while, then the bell rang, signaling the start of the next English exam.
The English section was very simple. After the listening comprehension, Gu Yin finished all the remaining questions in half an hour. When others left, she handed in her paper and walked out.
It was already noon, and the second and third grade students had already gone home. Gu Yin went to the bike shed to get her bike and waited for a while before Li Xiaohua came out. When she got home, Gu Shu and Gu Hua were already taking a nap.
Li Mingfang ladled out the porridge, handed it to Gu Yin, and even turned on the fan for her.
"How was the exam? Was it easy? If it wasn't, that's okay. I heard from Ashu and Huahua that we'll be divided into classes again in the second year of junior high. Let's study hard and we can get into the experimental class next time!"
When she rode her bike back, her back was covered in sweat. Gu Yin drank a few mouthfuls of cold porridge before she felt better.
"It's alright, Grandma. I think it's all done."
Li Mingfang nodded upon seeing this: "Alright, you eat quickly, then go and rest. I'll wake you up when it's time."
The afternoon math exam was a piece of cake for Gu Yin. She didn't even need to calculate many of the questions; she could tell the answers just by glancing at them. After she finished writing and checking two papers, she had only been gone for half an hour. She sat there until 40 minutes had passed before leaving.
Qin Xueming was stunned by her words and it took him a long time to come to his senses.
After not seeing each other for over a month, my deskmate has become a top student, asking questions online. Has the classmate been replaced?
In a sense, Qin Xueming has learned the truth.
"Gu Yin!"
Gu Yin, who was preparing to go home early, heard someone calling her. She turned around and saw that it was Zhao Xiaomin.
"Class monitor, what's wrong?"
Zhao Xiaomin ran over: "Are you going home?"
“Yes.” Gu Yin nodded.
Zhao Xiaomin's eyes lit up: "Let's go together then, I just wanted to ask you a few questions."
How did you choose the correct answer for the true/false questions?
Gu Yin smiled and said, "I checked them all. What about you?"
Zhao Xiaomin patted her chest: "Oh my, you scared me! I didn't even dare to write anything! When I saw you come out, I thought I'd just go with my own answers and tick all the boxes! The teacher who set the questions was too much, using psychological tactics like that! I thought I was seeing things, I wasn't even sure! So what was your answer to the last word problem, in meters?"
Gu Yin thought for a moment and said, "24 meters."
"I'm 24 meters tall too!" Zhao Xiaomin adjusted her glasses and looked at Gu Yin expectantly. "If we were in the same class, how about we be deskmates? I think you'd be a strong competitor for me! I'll definitely study harder than you!"
Gu Yin was a little surprised. Zhao Xiaomin had always been a good student in the eyes of the teachers. She was usually either reading or doing exercises and rarely interacted with the people around her. Unless you asked her a question, she would stay silent as much as possible. Of course, her grades were really good, and she often ranked in the top three of the grade.
Gu Yin was naturally happy to sit at the same table with her: "Sure, if you don't think I'll bother you."
"It's settled then. I told you, my dad went to the city and bought me a lot of workbooks. I'll show them to you later, and we can do them together! The question types are new, and the difficulty is quite high, but I think you should have no problem with them!"
"Okay, then be careful on the road, see you tomorrow!" Gu Yin waved, and the car turned the corner. Zhao Xiaomin's home was also in the town.
"You must read tonight! Don't waste time!"
Gu Yin: "...Okay!"
001 watched Zhao Xiaomin walk away and sighed, "Tsk tsk tsk, if every host was as self-disciplined as Zhao Xiaomin, I would have so much less to worry about!"
"Don't you only have your master as a host?" Gu Yin asked in confusion.
001 rolled her eyes: "So who did you think I was talking about?"
Gu Yin chuckled awkwardly, "Well, I'll try my best to emulate her! Don't worry!"
