Chapter 30 The Two People Emerging from the Cornfield
After Gu Yin successfully registered, seeing their reaction, she typed in her novel.
Gu Shu looked up some information about aviation. He was completely bewildered when he went in and still bewildered when he came out. He was completely stunned.
"Tap tap tap tap tap," came the sound of rapid keyboard typing from the side. He then came to his senses and turned to look at the source of the sound. Gu Yin's ten fingers were flying across the keyboard! One word after another popped up on the screen. The only two idioms that Gu Shu could think of at this moment were: "Transcending dust and chasing lightning, lightning and fire flying through the sky."
Gu Yin already knew he was watching, but she ignored him. She only needed to write 20,000 words, and once she finished, she could submit it. After the website reviewed it, if it passed, she could officially start writing.
The submission was successful. Gu Yin breathed a sigh of relief, stretched her wrists, and then turned to look at the stunned Gu Shu: "What's wrong?"
Gu Shu gave a thumbs up: "Awesome!"
Gu Hua, who was standing next to Gu Yin, patted her on the shoulder: "Ever since you hit your head, I've noticed that A-Yin has become smarter and smarter. It's like her brain has been redeveloped and her IQ has increased! I admire you!"
Gu Yin couldn't help but laugh: "It's not that exaggerated! Let's go home, it's getting dark."
She wasn't afraid her family would notice anything amiss. She was still herself, just with an extra set of memories. Her habits and mannerisms had never changed. If there were any problems, her mother would have said so already. Her mother was just worried that she was overthinking things and it was harming her health! Besides, she wasn't the only one who changed a lot after starting junior high; it's normal during puberty!
On their way home, it was getting dark. As they left the internet cafe, they called home, afraid that their families would worry.
Back at the village entrance, the place where they usually sat and chatted was empty. Everyone had either gone home to cook or eat. The three of them turned and headed towards the Gu family's house.
As Gu Yin was about to turn towards the Gu family's house, she glanced at the foot of the mountain. It was just a casual glance, but she saw Li Genzi walking out of the cornfield with his cane. Gu Yin's mind raced, and she quickly turned into the house. She parked the car, and without saying anything to her family, she ran up the stairs. Standing at the corner on the second floor, she squatted down and looked at the distant cornfield through the openwork stone bricks. She was grateful that she didn't have nearsightedness, because she could see the movements there clearly.
Li Genzi had already gone far away. Gu Yin squatted for a while, and the sky grew darker and darker, but she did not give up. She squatted for a while longer, and sure enough, there was a movement in the cornfield. Then a plump woman came out. She looked around and, seeing that no one was there, straightened her clothes and then casually carried her hoe and sickle back to the village.
In her previous life, during winter vacation, Li Genzi's family had a falling out with a family in their clan. The reason was unclear to everyone, but occasionally when washing clothes at the village entrance, they heard that the woman who had fallen out with Li Genzi seemed to have an ambiguous relationship with him in their cornfield. At the time, the aunt was just saying it casually, and Gu Yin didn't take it to heart. But when she saw Li Genzi come out of that family's cornfield just now, she suddenly remembered this incident. Sure enough, she had waited for it.
Gu Yin walked downstairs as if nothing had happened.
After dinner, everyone was looking at the magazines Gu Yin had brought back. The old lady couldn't read, so she didn't join in. Instead, she took apart Gu Shu's outgrown sweater and planned to use the yarn to knit a sweater for Gu Le later.
Gu Yin sat down next to the old lady and helped her roll up the yarn. Then, during their conversation, she casually asked, "Whose cornfield is next to the bamboo forest on the back hill? It's growing very well. It looks like we can pick and cook it in a couple of days."
"Fengni's family, her mother is very hardworking. She fertilizes and weeds all the time. There aren't many corn plants in our village that are raised as meticulously as hers!"
Gu Yin nodded, put the rolled-up item aside, and continued, "Fengni's father drinks all day and does nothing?"
The old lady sighed, "Li Dahu, that's just how he is in his life. He was alright when he was young, a hardworking young man. But ever since Fengni was born, he's turned out like this. What's wrong with girls? If you raise them well, there are plenty of girls who are more successful than boys! The leaders all say that women hold up half the sky. This preference for sons over daughters is unacceptable! Li Dahu is now hanging around in this village and that village all day long. Just wait and see, Fengni will have to support him in the future. What a tragedy!"
Gu Yin paused in her knitting: "Then why did Li Dahu stop having more children?" If it really was a case of favoring sons over daughters, he should have continued having children until he had a boy, like other families. Why did he stop after having only one child? This doesn't seem like a case of favoring sons over daughters.
"They say Juanzi's health deteriorated after giving birth to Fengni, so she couldn't have any more children. Otherwise, Li Dahu would be drinking or gambling all day long, and Juanzi wouldn't say a word. Why? Because Juanzi felt guilty towards Li Dahu, so she could only indulge him!"
Gu Yin seemed to be deep in thought. She had finished unraveling the yarn, so she didn't ask any further questions.
After falling asleep in the middle of the night, Gu Yin went into the system library as usual and went through the history of China from beginning to end. After that, she spent the whole night learning English with a foreign teacher who spoke with a British accent.
The next morning, the family went to the back mountain to dig sweet potatoes. After digging them up, they would put them in the cellar to eat slowly.
After breakfast, everyone went out.
Gu Shu brought matches; he could roast a few to eat after he dug them up.
As soon as the group reached the foot of the mountain, they saw someone carrying two bundles of firewood coming down from the mountain.
"Juanzi, when did you come out? You've already gathered firewood so early!" The old lady stepped aside to make way for her.
The person who had been looking down at the road looked up when they heard the voice and laughed, "You came out at six o'clock. After you finish picking them, you still have to cut grass to feed the pigs. Auntie, are you going to dig sweet potatoes? I see that the sweet potatoes in your field are big enough to be dug up."
The person in front of her was the one Gu Yin had seen coming out of the cornfield yesterday. Gu Yin looked at her carefully. She had a plump figure, a round face, double eyelids, and skin that was neither fair nor dark. Gu Yin's first impression was that she was easy to get along with, especially when she smiled, she was very approachable.
The old lady smiled and nodded: "The children came over on the weekend to dig together. We plan to harvest the whole plot today, otherwise the rats will ruin it soon."
Juanzi glanced at the Gu family's children, and when she looked at Gu Shu and Gu Le, her eyes were filled with envy.
"You have a lot of kids, you'll definitely be able to finish collecting them today! Don't worry!"
The old lady smiled upon hearing this: "It should be fine. You can go ahead then, we won't take up any more of your time."
Juanzi nodded, picked up the firewood, and went over.
001 jumped out as Gu Yin turned to look at Juanzi: "What are you looking at? Is there something wrong with her?"
Gu Yin shook her head: "I didn't see anything." After saying that, she turned around and went up the mountain.
