Chapter 41 Reunion at the Library
After their afternoon nap, the two walked to the city library, which was not far from the cultural center.
It was four stories high, somewhat like a school building, but not as grand as it became later.
Gu Yin saw that the door was already open and several people were swiping their cards to go in. Gu Yin went up to a staff member and asked him something.
"Hello, I don't have a library card. What should I do if I want to go in and read a book?"
The staff member pointed to an office next door: "Go there to get a library card. You can only read inside, you can't borrow books. Also, this library card is for one-time use only. Once you leave, it's no longer valid. I suggest you get a library card instead. It only costs 300 yuan, and you can come and go as you please. You can also borrow 5 books each time."
Gu Yin has enough money, but she will need it in a while and will have to borrow some from her family, so she doesn't plan to do it for now and will wait until she goes to high school.
"Thank you, I'll go take a look first."
Li Mengxin followed Gu Yinchao and said, "How about we get one?"
Gu Yin shook her head: "No need, I don't come to the city often, so it's useless to apply for it. I'll apply for it when I go to high school."
Li Mengxin didn't think too much about it. Since her daughter said so, she would do it that way.
The two student pass fees cost ten yuan. After entering, Gu Yin told Li Mengxin to go and see if there was anything she wanted to see, and to meet at the entrance at 4 o'clock. Li Mengxin thought it was safe here and there was nothing to worry about, so she agreed, and the two parted ways.
Finding a secluded corner, Gu Yin picked up a martial arts novel and sat down: "001, how are you going to gather information?"
001 flew out: "You don't need to worry about this. I'll go collect from other floors first and come back here later."
After she finished speaking, Gu Yin saw him carrying a small computer and flying upstairs.
Chu Yan didn't go home for lunch; instead, she went straight to the library and read for several hours. When she felt hungry, she came downstairs.
As soon as he reached the first floor, Chu Yan saw a familiar face sitting by the window. His eyes flickered; it was the girl who had participated in the English speech contest. Seeing her engrossed in a martial arts novel, Chu Yan smiled. Did she harbor a dream of becoming a knight-errant? Shaking his head, Chu Yan resumed his footsteps and walked out of the library.
At this moment, Gu Yin was discussing things with 001 in her mind.
"Is none of it useful?" 001 came down after only a short while, saying that the bookshelf upstairs had everything, and there was nothing he needed.
001 shook his head in disappointment: "No, do you know where I can find information about the origin of a city, like a county annals?"
Gu Yin asked in confusion, "Aren't these things usually in the library?"
001 sighed: "But it's not comprehensive. I want to see something more in-depth, like the origin of mankind. It's all in the library, but I want to know how they discovered fire, how they used it, what tools they had, and how they were made. I don't want theory; I want tutorials."
"Tutorial," Gu Yin thought for a moment, "What about the museum? It seems like there are these things in the museum. I saw them in my past life, but some things can't be displayed, and I don't have permission to see them."
001's eyes lit up: "That's right, I forgot about the museum. It's okay, you can take me there, and I can collect the items myself."
Gu Yin hesitated for a moment: "Won't your collection of these things have some impact on us?" She suddenly thought of movies about alien invasion of Earth.
001 rolled her eyes: "You're overthinking it. We collect these things not only because pure humans in the interstellar world are gradually disappearing and we don't know why, but also because mission takers sometimes go to primitive times to do missions. However, due to the lack of relevant information, many of those worlds cannot evolve and are judged as failures. So we put these things in the library so that they can learn on their own and use them when necessary."
Gu Yin smiled sheepishly: "Sorry, I used to watch too much TV."
001 didn't think anything of it. He checked the time and said, "Going to the museum today is not an option. You can take me there another time when you have time."
Gu Yin nodded. When the time came, she put the book away and walked to the door. Li Mengxin was already there.
"Mom, why are you out so early? Aren't you going to study?"
Li Mengxin shook her head: "I just came out too. I read Lin Daiyu's book for a while. I had read it once before, but I skimmed through it. Today I read it from the beginning again."
Thinking that there weren't any extracurricular reading materials at home, Gu Yin suggested, "Mom, why don't we go to the bookstore and buy a few books? You can read them, and the rest of the family can read them too!"
"Okay, let's go buy some!"
The two went to the city's largest bookstore and picked up the Four Great Classical Novels, as well as some foreign books. Gu Yin didn't need to worry that reading these books would cause them to neglect their studies, as they had the self-control to do so.
It wasn't until she got in the car to go home that Gu Yin remembered Zhao Xiaomin and the others, and immediately felt annoyed: "Mom, did you see my deskmate during the competition?"
Li Mengxin shook her head: "There were too many people, I didn't notice them. What, are they here to watch the game?"
Seeing this, Gu Yin sighed helplessly: "A few classmates said they were coming, but I forgot and didn't have time to say hello. Oh well, I'll apologize to them when I run into them on the street later."
After a bumpy journey, it was just getting dark when they arrived home. The old lady was already waiting at the village entrance. When she saw the two of them return, she breathed a sigh of relief: "Why are you so late! I thought you wouldn't come back and would stay another night. I called your grandfather's construction site, and the second son said you were coming back today. I was worried that something might have happened to you, so I even went to the hotel where you were staying. The owner said you left in the afternoon. Why are you only coming back now?"
The two got out and pushed the stroller. Gu Yin said apologetically, "We went to the library and bought some books at the bookstore, so we were a little late. Grandma, I'm sorry to have made you worry!"
Li Mengxin said embarrassedly, "It's my fault, I got so engrossed in the book!"
The old lady waved her hand: "It's alright, reading is a good thing! Just next time if it's late, let's not come back yet, let's stay another night. We don't need the money for one more night, safety is the most important thing!"
The two nodded: "Understood."
As soon as I entered the gate, Gu Shu ran over: "I heard from Uncle that you won first prize! Where's the trophy? Where's the certificate? Show it to me! Let me bask in the glory of this academic star, and maybe I can win an award someday!"
Gu Yin tossed the schoolbag to him: "It's inside, see for yourself!"
Gu Shu quickly opened his schoolbag, and Gu Hua and Gu Le ran over, looking on expectantly.
"Wow, the certificate is made of leather! Tsk tsk tsk, the words inside are all embossed in gold, unlike our school, where everything is handwritten! Is this trophy made of glass? It's so beautiful!"
Gu Hua took the certificate and said happily, "This is the stamp from the Publicity Department, how amazing!"
After Gu Le and Gu Hua had been looking at it for a while, Gu Shu asked them, "Have you finished looking at it?"
Seeing the two nod, he hugged the trophy and ran out the door, saying, "You guys eat dinner first, don't wait for me! I'll be back later!"
The old woman was furious: "You little brat, I haven't even seen it yet! Where are you going to take it!"
Gu Shu ran while turning back: "Grandma, you look at the certificate first! I'll take the trophy to show my friends, and then I'll show it to you! I'm off!"
Seeing that the old lady was angry, Gu Yin quickly spoke up: "Grandma, I'm hungry. Let's eat first! I want to go to sleep early after eating. I've been traveling all day and I'm so sleepy."
The old lady immediately turned around and walked towards the kitchen: "Then hurry up and set the table. We won't wait for him. We'll eat everything and leave no one behind!"
That's what I said, but when I was serving food in the kitchen, I still set aside some and put it in the cupboard.
After finishing her meal and washing up, Gu Yin quickly went to sleep.
