Chapter 119 Welcome to the world of Math Olympiad!
Du Zhongming didn't react for a moment: "Who's going?"
Feng Jianyue walked up to him and spoke again: "Principal, I'll go! I'm willing to go!"
Du Zhongming blinked, put the phone down without hanging up, and looked at Feng Jianyue seriously, asking, "Are you really willing to go? Do you know where it is?"
Feng Jianyue nodded: "I saw and heard some things at the Education Bureau just now, and I understand the general situation. I am willing to go."
Du Zhongming said seriously, "This isn't something that can be done in a day or two. You can only leave after this batch of junior high students graduates. Are you really sure about the manuscript? That town is relatively underdeveloped, and most of the students just play around. Fights happen frequently. You're a delicate girl. Are you sure you can handle it?"
Feng Jianyue nodded and said seriously, "I didn't act on impulse. I've been teaching in Beijing for a while now, and it's really great there. Many things there are very advanced. I want to share what I've learned, seen, heard, and felt with the students of Wanli Town No. 2 Middle School, hoping to inspire them and change their destiny! If I can change even one student, then my teaching trip won't have been in vain. If I can change two, then I've made a profit. If we all give up on them, then the students who are currently in a state of confusion and waiting for guidance will really be ruined!"
Seeing that she wasn't joking, Du Zhongming smiled and said, "Okay, go ahead. I'll keep your employment notice for you. I'll wait for you to come back here! Comrade Feng Jianyue! You're a good teacher! If you encounter any difficulties over there, feel free to come to me!"
"You can also come to the Education Bureau to find me! On behalf of the students of No. 2 Middle School, I thank Teacher Feng! Thank you!" A shout came from the other end of the phone.
Du Zhongming and Feng Jianyue both laughed.
"Teacher Feng, why aren't you going to eat yet? The cafeteria will be closed soon! You can take care of things this afternoon! There's no need to rush!" When Wang Zhi returned from lunch, he saw the new teacher, Teacher Feng, staring blankly out the window. Teacher Feng had been like this when Wang Zhi left the office, and she was still like this after he finished eating. Was she disappointed with the environment here?
Feng Jianyue snapped out of her reverie and said with a smile, "I'll cook for myself when I get back to the dorm. By the way, Teacher Wang, why isn't Gu Yin's eighth-grade grades on the student report card the headmaster sent me? Was it missed?"
Upon hearing this, Wang Zhi laughed and said, "You mean Gu Yin? She skipped the second year of junior high and went straight to the second year!"
Feng Jianyue exclaimed in surprise: "Skip a grade?"
Wang Zhi sat down opposite her and nodded: "Aren't you surprised? I was also surprised when I first came here and found out about this. Gu Yin did skip a grade, and she still got first place in this term exam! She's amazing! The director said that she might be the next student to be admitted to Jiang High School after Li Mingxuan! The director really cherishes her! Li Mingxuan was the student who was admitted to Jiang High School last semester."
Feng Jianyue was even more surprised. Based on the news she had heard in the city and the words of Principal Du and Director Zhao, she thought the students here had very poor grades. But there were still students who had been admitted to Jianggao High School. Why would they want to cancel their registration?
Feng Jianyue looked at all of Gu Yin's exam scores. In the first year of junior high, she had almost perfect scores, and later, she got perfect scores all the time.
Does she have a certificate?
"Yes! First prize in the essay competition and first prize in the English speech contest, both at the city level."
Feng Jianyue nodded: "I'll learn more about her later. It's getting late, I'll go back to my dorm to eat first. Teacher Wang, you go ahead and do your work."
Back in her dormitory, Feng Jianyue boiled water and then called Principal Du, asking him to send her several sets of recent exam papers from key junior high schools in the city, covering all subjects, and also to pack up a copy of the Olympiad exam papers.
Principal Du didn't know what she was going to do, but it was convenient for him, so he made a phone call to the director of the affiliated middle school and asked him to find it and send it to Wanli Town.
The headmaster of the affiliated high school didn't dare to delay, so he directly gave the exam papers to a teacher and asked him to drive them over.
When Feng Jianyue woke up from her afternoon nap, the test papers had already been delivered to the school gate. She was surprised. Did Principal Du feel guilty towards her? Why was he being so helpful?
The first class in the afternoon was physical education. Gu Yin had just finished warming up with her classmates when Mo Wen called her out of the line.
"Your Chinese teacher wants you to go to her desk. Go quickly."
Gu Yin nodded and walked towards the teachers' building.
When Gu Yin arrived at the office, only Feng Jianyue was inside. After submitting her report, Gu Yin went in.
"Teacher, you wanted to see me?"
Feng Jianyue first handed her a math test paper: "Sit down next to me and do this test paper."
Gu Yin took the test paper and saw that it said Jianggao Affiliated Middle School and that it was a math test. She didn't ask why Feng Jianyue, a Chinese teacher, was giving her a math test to do. Instead, she silently took the pen and started working on it.
The bell rang, and Gu Yin had finished her test paper.
"The later questions have too many steps, and I don't have enough time, so I won't write out the process. I'll just write the answers directly." Gu Yin explained as she handed the test paper to Feng Jianyue.
Feng Jianyue took the test paper and corrected it. After she finished, she didn't say anything and then took out another math test paper.
"You don't need to go to the next class. I've asked for leave for you. Do as many of these sheets as you can, but write out the steps. You have 80 minutes. I'll time you. Let's begin."
Before Gu Yin could even think about it, she heard the start and began answering questions.
This test paper has eight fill-in-the-blank questions and three answer questions. After Gu Yin started writing, she found that this test paper was much more difficult than the previous one and was even beyond the syllabus. Especially the later big questions, Gu Yin could not solve them using junior high school knowledge. She could only use the high school knowledge she had learned on her own. Even so, by the time she got to the last question, there was no time left because she had spent too much time on the first two big questions.
This was the first time Gu Yin had encountered such a test paper. She frowned and handed the paper to Feng Jianyue: "Teacher, I haven't finished it."
Feng Jianyue: "...It's okay, let me take a look first." Isn't it normal not to finish writing? It would be abnormal to finish writing!
She got all the fill-in-the-blank questions right. When Feng Jianyue turned to the back of the test paper and saw the more challenging questions, she was stunned. Most of the blank space on the back of the paper was covered with solution steps, densely packed!
She frowned as she carefully read it from beginning to end, but her brows relaxed more and more as she read on, until she finished reading and then she laughed.
"You used your junior high school knowledge, found it couldn't solve the problem, so you started using high school knowledge? You self-studied high school knowledge? How far have you gotten in your studies?"
Gu Yin honestly replied, "I'll study until the second year of high school."
Feng Jianyue smiled even more happily and placed the test paper in front of her: "Do you know what kind of test paper this is?"
Gu Yin shook her head.
"This is the exam paper for the National Junior High School Mathematics League! Do you know what it represents?"
Gu Yin's heart skipped a beat: "Mathematical Olympiad."
"You got it right! Your test paper has a very high accuracy rate! If you were taking the test at the time, you would definitely have passed! Did you know that those who pass the league can be given priority to be selected for the math Olympiad team, and students who pass can join the national team! Representing the country in competitions! But you're in the third year of junior high now, so you can't participate, but!"
Gu Yin looked at Feng Jianyue without saying a word. If she had participated back then, she probably wouldn't have passed. After all, the knowledge she needed to do this test was all she had.
"But! You still have a chance in high school! If you get into Jianggao High School, I'll do my best to teach you about math olympiad! Oh, and I forgot to tell you, I was a provincial champion in our province before! How about it, interested?"
Gu Yin was very excited; she was extremely interested! She had always been figuring things out on her own, and there were many things she didn't understand. Now that a teacher was guiding her, why wouldn't she be happy?!
"I do!"
Feng Jianyue laughed and extended her right hand: "Welcome to the world of math olympiad!" This was probably the happiest thing that had happened to her in a while.
Gu Yin reached out and grasped his hand: "I'll do my best! I won't let you down!"
