Chapter 85: The Admission Score for the City's No. 1 High School (Combined)
Upon entering the examination room, after the test papers were distributed, Gu Shu immediately turned to the essay page. His eyes lit up when he saw the topic: write an essay based on a picture! Those two contrasting pictures had appeared once before in the dozen or so test papers A-Yin had given him! And back then, A-Yin had even provided him with an in-depth explanation!
Good heavens! I got a question! Am I that lucky?!
Time to answer questions! Gu Shu filled in her personal information and quickly got into the zone. For some reason, she was in a particularly good state today! She felt like she had divine assistance when she wrote! The more she wrote, the more energetic she became, and the more her mind worked!
Even after finishing and handing in his paper, Gu Shu was still in excellent spirits. He felt as if he had performed exceptionally well!
Li Xiang took the food to the school gate and waited. From afar, she saw Gu Shu come out with a happy face.
Handing him the food, Li Xiang couldn't help but ask, "Why are you so happy? Was the question easy?"
Gu Shu nodded: "You did exceptionally well today! You finished writing everything!"
Hearing this, Li Xiang also became happy: "That's good, that's good! Hurry up and take your things inside! Eat and get some rest! Don't be careless in the exam this afternoon! Do your best! Keep up the good mood until the end!"
Three days of exams, three days of torrential rain. After the exams were over and I walked out of the school gate, the rain finally subsided.
After the exam, Gu Shu finally relaxed, a state of tension that had been building up.
"Damn it, the exams are finally over! I'm finally free! I'm never studying again!!" Li Dalong roared at the school gate!
Gu Shu patted him on the shoulder: "There's conscription in August, are you sure you want to sign up?"
Li Dalong nodded: "I'm not cut out for studying. I'm too young to work, and I won't be able to do anything. There's no future in farming at home. I understand that much. I'll try my luck in the army and fight for my future! If it doesn't work out, I can come out again. I'll be at the right age, and whatever I do, I'll be much more mature in terms of mindset and physical condition than I am now!"
After saying that, he punched Gu Shu in the chest: "Study hard! When you become a big boss in the future, Xiao Ming and I will be counting on you!"
Gu Shu rolled her eyes: "By the time you become successful, I'll still be studying. High school is even harder. If I don't get into university, I'll come and live with you. You better work hard! Make sure you're a big spender so I can hold on to you!"
Just as they finished talking about Li Xiaoming, he came out. The group sighed for a while before riding their bikes away from the school.
This is how young people should be: full of lofty ambitions and boundless potential!
At the dinner table, the Gu family members, who hadn't dared to ask Gu Shu how his exam went for the past three days, finally spoke up.
Old lady: "How did you feel after the exam?"
Old man: "Have you finished all the questions?"
Others: "Is it difficult? Are you confident you can get into the county's top high school?"
Gu Shu quickly ate a few bites of food before proudly saying, "I think I should be able to do it! I finished everything! My performance was even better than in the previous tests! Most importantly, I guessed several questions correctly on the dozen or so test papers A-Yin gave me, including math, Chinese, and physics! Especially math! I just did the last bonus question the day before yesterday! I feel like I can get into the county's top high school, but we'll have to wait for the estimated score to know for sure!"
Gu Yin had forgotten that Gu Shu's class had to estimate their scores before filling out their college applications, unlike her class when they filled out their applications after the scores were released. She remembered that many people had inaccurately estimated their scores, which led to some students who could have gone to the Experimental High School choosing to repeat a year. The policy of estimating scores before filling out applications was abolished in Gu Hua's class.
"Shall we go estimate the score tomorrow?" Gu Yin asked, puzzled.
Gu Shu nodded: "Yes, we'll estimate our scores tomorrow and the day after, and fill out our college applications at the end of the month. I'll go estimate my scores tomorrow and also pick up my things from the dorm!"
Gu Qingming waited for him to finish speaking before reminding him, "High school starts in September, and you fill out your college applications in early July. It's almost a two-month break. Have you thought about what you want to do?"
Gu Shu scratched his head: "Let's rest for a few days first, and then go to town to check on the shop?"
Gu Qingming rolled his eyes: "Is that all you've got? Come work with me at the construction site after the holidays, and see what your uncle and I do every day, so you can learn something!"
Gu Shu had no objections; let's go to the construction site then.
The next morning at ten o'clock, Gu Shu got up, ate breakfast, and rode his bike to school.
Gu Yin and her classmates in the first and second years of junior high school also returned to school today. As soon as get out of class ended, Gu Yin ran to the ninth-grade teachers' office. She wanted to see how Gu Shugui's grades were.
In the office, Gu Shuxian glanced at the answers to the Chinese exam paper. He had gotten most of them right. When Gu Yin arrived, he was explaining the structure and central idea of his answer to the reading comprehension and composition questions to the teacher.
Gu Yin glanced at the answer and listened to what Gu Shu said. Although it was different from the answer, the theme was still there, so there shouldn't be any problem.
Sure enough, after listening, the teacher patted him on the shoulder: "If I remember correctly, you're basically set for Chinese. I'd give you a score of 110, with 10 points deducted from the composition and reading comprehension. But I don't think you'll lose that many points. You should check out the other subjects first!"
Gu Shu nodded, and upon seeing Gu Yin, smiled and said, "I hadn't finished estimating when you arrived. Perfect! I'll make the correct judgment first, and you can help me keep score!"
Gu Yin nodded.
After Gu Shu finished checking his math answers, he checked his English answers. Gu Yin helped him tally up his math score. After they finished, Gu Yin looked at the score in front of her and patted Gu Shu on the shoulder.
"Perfect score in math!"
Gu Shu was stunned! He took the answer key and checked it again, then calculated it himself, and looked at the total score: 120! He was dumbfounded.
Normally, his math score is around 105 in exams and tests, so this time he really exceeded expectations!
Gu Shu excitedly hugged Gu Yin tightly: "Sister! My dear sister! Thanks to you for the test paper! Really! Thank you so much! This is the first time I've seen a perfect score in math! I'll treat you to soda for a month!"
Gu Yin was so tightly hugged by him that she could hardly breathe. The school bell rang, and Gu Yin pulled her hands away from him: "I have to go to class. Wait for me at noon so we can go back together and I can help you with your things. Hurry up and estimate your grades!"
Gu Yin was happy for him too! It would be even better if he could study in the city!
After Gu Yin left, Gu Shu estimated his scores for the remaining subjects by checking the answers. After he finished estimating all of them, Gu Shu looked at his scores: a total of 860, plus 40 for physical education, for a total of 900.
His estimated scores are: Chinese 110, Math 120, English 100, Politics (open book, answers are mostly the same, so he should get around 95), History 90, Physics and Chemistry (70 points on the written exam + 30 points on the lab exam; the lab scores came out last week, and he got 25 points in both Physics and Chemistry). Including the written exam scores, his Physics and Chemistry scores are around 90, and his Natural Science and Science scores are around 80. He got 39 points in Physical Education. In total, Gu Shu's estimated score is around 814.
Based on this score, it seems like getting into a top county school shouldn't be a problem!
Gu Shu walked up to her homeroom teacher and asked excitedly, "Teacher! What was the admission score for the county high school last year?"
The homeroom teacher adjusted his glasses and smiled, saying, "700? What's up? Did you estimate your score? How much?! Is it enough for you to get into the Experimental High School?"
700! I'm definitely in! Gu Shu put the estimated score on the table in front of his teacher, hugged him tightly, and shouted excitedly, "I got into the county high school!! Hahaha! I got into the county high school! Teacher! I got into the county high school!"
The homeroom teacher took the paper and saw 814! It had surpassed 800! He glanced at Gu Shu, ignoring Gu Shu's bear hug, and quickly took out the recruitment plan, flipped to the section for the No. 1 Middle School, and looked at the minimum admission score of 800. The homeroom teacher took a few deep breaths.
He placed his hands firmly on Gu Shu's shoulders and said in a deep voice, "If your score is not misjudged, then do you dare to take a gamble and apply to the No. 1 High School in the city?"
Everyone else in the office was surprised when Gu Shu said he was going to the county's top high school, but now the teacher wants Gu Shu to apply to the city's top high school! The deliveryman immediately gathered around.
The No. 1 High School in the city is the second-best high school in the city, only slightly worse than Jiang High School! Generally, if you get into the No. 1 High School, as long as you don't do anything stupid, you have an 80% chance of getting into a university! Gu Shu is too amazing!
Gu Shu was getting excited when he heard his old teacher tell him to try out the No. 1 Middle School in the city.
Gu Shu was completely bewildered: "Wh-what? The No. 1 High School in the city? Me? The No. 1 High School in the city? Teacher, you're not kidding, are you? How could I possibly get into the No. 1 High School in the city?! I've already tried my best to get into the county high school!"
The homeroom teacher understood Gu Shu's helplessness. He had worked incredibly hard, and all the teachers thought he could get into the Experimental Middle School. Everyone had witnessed how diligent and serious he had been this semester, and then this exam made him a dark horse! What a surprise! He has unlimited potential!
"Yes, No. 1 High School! You should know that our school hasn't had any students admitted to schools in the city for a long time. This time, your score is just above the admission line. Applying to No. 1 High School is a gamble. If you're not admitted, you'll have to repeat a year. But if you are admitted, your undergraduate degree is basically guaranteed! What's your decision?"
Gu Shu looked at the admission scores of the city's No. 1 High School in previous years. The lowest score was 800, and the highest score was 815 three years ago, one point higher than his own. He gritted his teeth and looked at his homeroom teacher.
"I'll go back and discuss it with my family, and I'll come back to fill it out tomorrow!"
The homeroom teacher nodded: "Okay, go back and discuss it with your family! You must consider it carefully!"
Gu Shu nodded. He had no interest in chatting with the others. He returned to his dormitory, packed his things, and waited for Gu Yin and Gu Hua to come over. He tied the lighter items to the back of their bicycle, and the three of them went home.
Gu Hua, who had originally wanted to ask him how his estimated score was, saw his pained expression and his furrowed brows that looked like they could trap a mosquito, so she didn't dare to ask anymore.
Looking at Gu Yin, he asked with a questioning gaze, "What's wrong with him? Did he not do well on the exam?"
Gu Yin was also puzzled. This shouldn't be the case. Could it be that she failed the last few exams?
She didn't want to ask anything on the way, so she looked at Gu Hua and shook her head: "I don't know, let's talk about it when we get home!"
No one from the Gu family went out today; they all stayed home specifically to wait for Gu Shu to return so they could find out the exam results.
When the three children returned, they all looked worried. Everyone's hearts sank – could it be that they did poorly on the exam?!
