Chapter 77: Gargoyle is the enemy's MVP

Everyone looked in the direction Geralt pointed, and saw nothing but darkness in front of them. They didn't have Geralt's night vision.

The druid said in distress, "Press the stone? So far away, so high? How about Geralt, cast a few more fire-breathing sigils to show me the direction, and I will try to control the wall grass to press the stone?"

Lann patted the druid on the shoulder: "No need to bother."

He turned his gaze to Geralt. "All we need is a good enough crossbowman."

Geralt had already observed the distance between several stones in the dark, silently calculating the angle in his mind.

After a breath, the witcher took off the crossbow on his back, pulled the trigger, and a crossbow arrow flew into the darkness with a "whoosh".

As the sound of the crossbow arrow breaking when hitting a hard object was heard, there was a series of "clang clang" sounds from the friction between the spring and the moving stone. It was obvious that some mechanism was triggered in the darkness.

"There really is a movable mechanical stone." Lan heard a soldier exclaim in disbelief.

"He actually found rocks protruding from the rock wall in such a dark place."

"You can still shoot!"

The soldiers marveled at the witcher's amazing abilities, while Geralt reloaded his arrows with a blank face.

After the last mechanism was put back into place, the door that looked like a brick wall in front of him began to vibrate slowly, and then slowly rose up with a dull "rumble" sound, revealing the passage behind it.

"Ha, it worked." A soldier quietly gave Geralt a thumbs up.

The road ahead was very uneven, with scattered stones and some sculpture fragments everywhere, as if it had experienced a small landslide. There were no stairs, and many uphill climbs required the joint efforts of several people to move forward.

After walking forward for about a hundred meters, the view suddenly opened up and a hall appeared in front of everyone.

The druid looked around and nodded, "This place is interesting. It looks like the designer put a lot of thought into it. We should look around."

This is a hall with a round vault, divided into two floors, which can accommodate about 40 to 50 people at the same time. It seems too simple to call it a palace, but it doesn't do justice to the magical and artistic decorations inside to call it a hall.

In the middle of the hall there is a statue three people tall, with smooth lines, but the face is not clearly visible. The base underfoot is also bumpy and full of stone chips.

On the pedestal was a small box the size of a palm, which was opened to reveal a gold necklace. Next to it lay a skeleton, on which were found several pieces of oren and kronor.

There is also a small altar in front of the statue, which is of a strange shape.

The top of the statue's head is the top of the dome, and from this top there are simple striped carvings. When it reaches the ground, the striped carvings overlap and sink inward to form small compartments for placing stone statues.

And in each small compartment, there is a pot-bellied devil-like stone statue.

The stone statue is about as tall as a person, with two horns on its head, protruding canine teeth and a ferocious face. There are only two palm-sized wings on its back, with bloated upper limbs and short and thick lower limbs.

Looking at the two decorative wings, Sword commented: "They can't fly."

The druid stepped forward to take a closer look, his expression gradually becoming strange: "These seem to be... gargoyles. A kind of monster created by a warlock injecting magic power into stone statues."

When they heard it was a monster, everyone's expressions became serious. They looked around and saw that there were ten stone statues in the room.

"Are they strong?"

Geralt knew all about these monsters, even better than the druid. He answered, "They are hard to be hurt by swords. Gargoyles are mostly made of granite and marble. They have amazing defense and great strength. Even heavy armor cannot withstand a punch from them. They can also throw large stones to kill enemies.

In addition, they can teleport over short distances and may suddenly appear behind or above the enemy, making it difficult to defend against them."

With every word Geralt said, everyone's expressions became more solemn. Only Lan seemed to have expected it and didn't treat it as a serious enemy.

"But they must have weaknesses, right?"

Geralt nodded. "They are stupid. The Axis Sign has no effect on them. Silver can hurt them, and Dimetic Metal can disrupt their magical kinetic energy."

Lann said: "You use swords to fight. Since they are made of marble and granite, anything that can destroy marble and granite can also destroy them, right?"

Geralt hesitated, then nodded.

Lann turned around and called to the soldiers: "Change weapons, use hammers, go ahead. Hit them one by one, don't give them a chance to wake up!"

This is why Lann asked the soldiers to carry hammers - to face the gargoyles, golems and other hard guys that are not made of flesh and blood!

The soldiers dispersed, and the sound of "boom" immediately echoed in the hall. One after another, the stone statues were smashed on the head, and then a few hammers hit the body and completely shattered into stones.

Lan was worried that the weak point of the gargoyle was not in its head, so he insisted on breaking it into blocks to be safe.

"Ahhh, intruder, uninvited guest!"

After clearing out a large number of motionless stone statues, a gargoyle suddenly let out a rumbling roar from its abdomen, the sound was low and deafening.

It opened its eyes and suddenly saw five or six hammer heads coming towards it at the same time.

As for gargoyles, magical theorists still debate how to classify them. Some claim that they are a kind of golem, for example, because gargoyles are just strange statues driven by magic to do simple errands, and they can only perform the most basic tasks.

Simply put, they are too stupid and their reactions are too slow. Even if they have certain magical abilities, they are very rigid in how they use them, and they don't even have a chance to display them.

The roaring magic creature was soon decapitated by a hammer forged by humans. All it did after waking up was roar.

The soldiers, who cooperated well and were already familiar with each other, hit the gargoyle with hammers in a rhythmic manner, completely breaking the gargoyle's body into pieces.

They were just startled by the sudden roar.

"Sure enough, there are still some that can move." Lan asked, "Is this the last one?"

Everyone looked around and saw that all the stone statues had turned into pieces, making the already simple hall look not only "dilapidated" but also "battle-damaged".

As usual, Geralt went forward to touch the corpse. The materials produced by this kind of magical creation are generally more advanced. Elemental essence and gargoyle dust can be collected, which can be used to enchant equipment.

The druid also stepped forward and took the gargoyle's heart. Gargoyles were quite valuable in the magic circle. When Lann and the others were smashing it, the druid's eyes were twitching with pain.
